This is probably the most fun and exciting giveaway I have ever participated in! You get to win a fully thrifted outfit from Beth and I. We have recently had a Thrift Style Thursday swap, where all members of the group were paired up and got to send, or in our case, give each other goodies in person. And since it was so much fun thrifting for another person, we decided to pass on the Gift of Thrift to 4 other people! And that’s where you come in! We would love to gift you a fully thrifted outfit, and in our case, since Beth and I both live in the Twin Cities area, if you are from the area, you get to go thrifting with us, and we will style you! And probably take you out for lunch or coffee too!

I will add pictures of what Beth thrifted for me a little bit later today. This Friday is a super exciting day for Sam and I, and if you follow me on Instagram, you will probably find out soon enough ;)

Emerald Green

I always wish I was back in New York or Chicago for St Patrick’s Day, I just think those cities have way more going on than Minneapolis. I mean we have the Mississippi we could dye green!

But here is one of my favorite vintage emerald dresses that I wore with this thrifted sweater! I hope you like this look for today’s #ThriftStyleThursday, and don’t forget to check out other girls posts ;)

Happy Thursday everyone! Tomorrow I leave for Chicago! I am so excited! Sam and I are headed down there right after class! So I have to pack pack pack tonight. Pack for the both of us. I am quickly trying to finish up all the homework I can possibly and impossibly have, because I want to spend as much time with my friends as I can. Sam and I haven’t had a date night for a while, so that’s going to be a whole date weekend. So I am really glad I decided to renew my Russian passport, because otherwise this trip wouldn’t be happening ;)

This week’s #ThriftStyleThursday theme is Winter White out, and for the first time this January I wish we had more snow. I guess it’s all on the East Coast today! Mother Nature is just screwing with us all here in the Midwest. I am still expecting shit to hit the fan in February.

So thank you Megan of Eclecticity for coming up with a theme for this week! Let me know what you think of my outfit, I kind of cheated and it’s not all white, but, let’s be honest, I didn’t even wear all white on my wedding day, so….

Don’t forget to check out everyones posts, all the images below are clickable and the #ThriftStyleThursday logo will take you to our Facebook page, so make sure to like that as well!

Cozy Sweaters – #ThriftStyleThursday

2015-01-15 08.04.51 2015-01-15 08.06.46

Welcome to another week of #ThriftStyleThursday! I am so excited we are back on track with our weekly posts! It just makes me so happy!

This week’s host is Beth of Life with Bethie The Boo, and she came up with a cozy sweater theme. This winter I feel like I am the sweater queen! I obtained a lot of new different sweaters, and I am wearing them with everything! I especially love layering them over dresses.

The oversized sweater look is definitely my favorite!

Do you wear a lot of sweaters? What styles do you prefer?

Make sure to head over to other gals’ blogs and check them out! This week we are so excited to have Mounia of Chic-ky join us!

Shop my look: Plaid Skirts and Skorts, Oversized and Grey sweaters, Plaid scarves, and Brown boots.

Missed last week’s #ThriftStyleThursday? No worries, here is the post.

And as a quick reminder, there is a Vanity Fair Lingerie Giveaway going on for Valentine’s Day!

Fall Closet Cleaning Tips

2014-11-06 12.31.26

Wait what? Yes, you heard me! Fall cleaning. Just like there is spring cleaning, I think there should be fall cleaning.

A lot of us are familiar with spring cleaning, but this year i am not waiting till spring, I am organizing and cleaning out in the fall.
Have you ever bought large plastic bins to store your clothes in for the winter? I remember when we were looking at buying our house, we visited so many different ones, and in one of the attics, the owner had the whole bin/labelling system that I was fascinated with. But Sam convinced me there was no need for that.
And he is right.
We have very small closet space and I store my sumer dresses in our upstairs closets in the winter, and winter clothes upstairs in the summer, but before anything is moved up there, I go through it and toss anything that:
  • doesn’t fit
  • looks too worn out
  • hasn’t been worn in over a year
  • isn’t “me” anymore – style changes, your tastes change, so your wardrobe should too

If you’ve read my latest post, you know that I have just a slight obsession with coats. But coats, especially if made from natural fibers and vintage, can begin looking worn out too soon. Those are definitely items to let go off.

Accessories are another item that becomes outdated too fast. The slogan – you can never have too many pairs of shoes or too many bags isn’t for me. You might never have enough of those, but you also might run out of space really fast. And fashion, even though is a constant in many of our lives, is also fast.
The fall cleaning doesn’t only include the clothes. Being a beauty blogger, I receive a lot of samples and full size products. So cleaning out my makeup drawer (read: closet) is as important as cleaning out my wardrobe. Carefully examine the expiration date, get rid of the products that have expired, or that you know you are not going to use. This is one of my favorite product shelf life guides:
Make up/Beauty to clean out:
  • anything you may be allergic to
  • anything that has expired
  • anything that has separated or smells funny
Being in love with the idea of DIY I seem to hoard craft supplies. I have yarn, fabric and leather that I think I am never going to use. I also have a lot of patterns that never see the light of day. Realistically estimating the free time I am going to have for the DIY projects I have planned, and the fact that my sewing machine has been broken for over 6 months now, I donated most of my supplies, and cleaned out my upstairs area.
Home decor
Art and frames bought on impulse, sometimes even furniture. The side tables, that you can never have too many of. All these need to go. I was holding on to glass center pieces from our wedding from 3 years ago.
Savers has recently introduced an easy donation system. Now you don’t have to drop off at the store, but choose one of the locations from the list below or click on the following link

Final thoughts: We’ve been talking about different types of consumers in one of my classes, and here is a great example of Jessi Arrington, who may seem extreme in her approach, but we can all learn from it.

Gina + Will Goodwill

ginapluswill

Last Friday night I finally made it to the new thrift store Gina + Will in Dinkytown. Operated by Goodwill Easter Seals MN it is an experimental store targeted towards young people and students. Located at 1324 5th St SE, Minneapolis it’s right across the street from Target Express and is very easy to find.

I got there around 7 pm and the place was busy! There was music, DJ, food and refreshments, and of course so many styles to choose from.

It was also a great chance for me to snap a few pictures of some outfits that made it on the Ustyle tumblr page!

What to shop Gina + Will for?

Fall apparel – sweaters, jackets, boots – it’s all there and the selection is great.

Bottoms – jeans, skirts, slacks, sweatpants (if you wish) can also be found in a large variety of styles and sizes.

Specialty racks – Gina + Will loves black and white was one of them last week, and I snagged two amazing items off of that rack!

Go there for the school spirit wear (and other local teams too ;) ) – get that Goldie on your shirt for cheaper than anywhere else!

Have you visited Gina + Will Goodwill? What did you think?

One of my finds was this white Talbots pleated skirt. You will be seeing a lot of it this fall, trust me!

Back to School #tst

Back to school is easy when you are actually going to school, which in my case, I am. Classes started on Tuesday, and so far I am beyond excited and ready for action. We’ll see how long that lasts. I do have my Duluth Trading Company bag to tag along with me though, it’s so big and functional, and I love the smell of it!

New York Fashion Week Started today, and I will be glued to my screen, you know it! The BCBGMaxAzria show I caught this am before class was amazing! Live shows are the best! I was planning on volunteering at this Fashion Week, but school started and I don’t think it would’ve been a good idea to skip out on a whole bunch of classes. Maybe next semester? ;) And just like I did recaps in the spring, I will be doing them now. So come back later today! Check out other #ThriftStyleThursday posts on our FB page!

Train Ride

2014-08-18 14.55.48

Last Friday we took a train to St Paul. The green line has been up for a couple months now, and that’s the train I’ll be taking to the U every day for the next two years of my life, so I was more than excited to check it out.

Why were we headed to St Paul? To check out Mickey’s Diner. If you’ve seen Mighty Ducks, you know what I’m talking about.

The diner, the food and the downtown St Paul are definitely charming, and small. I fell in like. I am glad you are only a train ride away now, St Paul.

Oh no! My only mesh shirt is in Minnesota while I’m still in Colorado! I am driving home today but hate to miss a great Thrift Style Thursday! So here are some pics from my vacation! And I will post a mesh outfit soon! I’m sure the girls came up with something amazing this week!

August starts tomorrow! What???? Can you believe it? Only 4 more weeks before school starts! But let’s take advantage of the sunny days, play outdoors and have fun. I want to invite you to join #ThriftStyleAugust Instagram challenge. The rules are simple: follow the prompts for each day and make sure to use the hashtag! And you don’t have to post every day if you can’t! Also, as you may have noticed all the Thursday prompts match our Thrift Style Thursday themes.

Replacement

jcrew-chambray-shirt denim-on-denim-shorts

We often replace things in life. And this time, I had to replace my chambray shirt, that I wore out in about 2 years. It’s hard to part with an item that has been there for you when you didn’t know what to wear. It’s hard to find a replacement. I finally understand people who buy several different shirts or tops of the same kind, maybe in different colors, but, you get the idea. Last week during my thrifting escapades I found this JCrew chambray shirt, and, there it was – my new chambray.

I also went and got balayage done last Saturday. This time around Charlie did an even better job, and it didn’t take me too long to realize that I am not a highlights person. But a balayage is right up my alley. Having my hair bleached definitely helps wash it less over the summer, because it doesn’t get greasy as fast. Another lesson I learned is that I probably shouldn’t go 4 months between the appointments.
