Everyone knows that these days it’s the baggier the better, to a certain extent of course! When I put something oversized on top, I make sure to go skinny on the bottom, and this is how it usually turns out:
Top – Old Navy size M (it’s HUGE!) but since it was bought on sale for a ridiculously small amount of money, and they didn’t have size S anywhere, I got it. It’s comfy and soft, almost at the point where I want to wear it around the house with a pair of sweats, but am fighting this urge!
Jeans – X2 Denim by Express, thrifted at Savers, $8
Scarf – Christmas gift from a few years ago
Floral necklace – Gofavor.com, that necklace was ordered for about $4 back in the day when I went through – Let’s order as much cheap crap costume jewelry from China as I can. If I could, I would return every single product I ordered there, because… well you see the crossed out word above! The metal is so cheap it fades away after 2 or 3 uses. This necklace has been kind of okay, but I don’t want to jinx it here! So I’ll keep wearing it out and about, and maybe later you’ll see it in one of my DIY projects!
Boots – Christmas gift from Sam <3
And of course my Marc Jacobs Watch! I have to wear it, everyday, yes, that’s how much I like that watch!
On the other note, winter isn’t going anywhere here in Minneapolis. After a snow thunderstorm last Thursday I am hopeless, on the verge of depression, someone please help! At least this blog is becoming more bright and colorful, I’ve finally figured out how to create a row of social media icons on my blog, yay me
In other news, I have a lot of DIY projects coming up for you dear readers, so stay tuned!
Love,
Z
PS. Did you notice I am not wearing any make-up in this picture?
I love Savers! Wait, I don’t think some of you heard me
I LOVE SAVERS!
Now that’s better. Savers was the only thrift store that offered 50% off on Sunday before President’s Day! Take that all the rest. Well of course you had to have the club card, but it’s free to sign up for one, and you all should go do it!
So here is all I got:
Chico’s Jacket Size 0 – $6
Chico’s top size 2 – $4
NY & Co Top Size S – $3
Nine West Vintage America top Size M- $4
B’leev cardigan – $3
X2 Skinny Jeans Size 1 – $7.50
I have to admit, I did stop by Goodwill last Saturday, and got an amazing semi-precious stone necklace and a curtain! Curtain? Yes, I have a refashion coming up featuring that curtain So stay tuned!
And don’t forget to enter my Giveaway! I have also joined Smashion, and Etsy profile is coming in the nearest future as well! Don’t miss out on all of the Being Zhenya updates, stay connected via Facebook and Twitter!
Cheers,
Z
I am going to be honest with you, this was supposed to be a dress. But then my proportions were really off, so I had to turn it into a tunic. But I have a couple more shirts that my husband has gladly (yeah, right!) donated, and maybe one of them will eventually turn into a dress!
Here is how:
1. Take a shirt and lay it out flat:
2. Find a dress or shirt that fits you well, and lay it on top of the shirt, trace it:
3. Cut along the lines:
4. Hem the neckline and the sleeves, add personal touches (I went for a vintage lace collar and lace fabric), and you are done!
Have a great weekend everyone, and don’t forget to stop back tomorrow, I am having a SALE on my blog!
Xo,
Z
Today we are going to frame a doily and hang it up on the wall, so it looks like this:
I saw this idea in one of my sewing books. And immediately decided to bring it to life. Of course it took me about a month and a half to find the right frame, but in the end, here it is, my $3 wall art!
You are going to start off by getting all supplies ready! All you really need is a frame and a doily, plus some construction paper if you want to change up the background. Now don’t worry if you can’t crochet, there are plenty of doilies you can purchase for cheap at a thrift store. I chose to make mine, because, well I can, and it gave me more options!
As you can see, I ended up with a different doily than what I framed at first. I had a last minute change of heart. The doily I originally made didn’t look as good!
And there you have it, our quick and easy DIY! It’s always good to add something new to the walls, don’t you think?
Have a wonderful week everyone!
Z
Yay! DIY Friday is back. Or refashion Friday. Or Friday posts in general! I’ve been actually pretty good at posting on a regular basis this week! I’ll try to keep ‘em posts coming. Especially now that my blog has a Facebook page! I tend to feel like this more and more often:
But on with the refashion! I got this vintage romper off of Freecycle.org over the summer, and have been wanting to make it into something more wearable ever since!
I mean how hideous is this piece? But I loved the fabric, the pattern, you know how I am!
So I cut of the shoulder pads, cut off the legs, and then made a high-low hem line. I kind of had to, because of the fact that there used to be pants and a crotch seam:
Next step was hemming it, then cutting the sleeves to make them shorter, and hemming them as well!
I also had to go over some of the seams, because they were going apart:
Stay tuned for the Outfit post featuring this piece! But here is what it looks like on the hanger:
I am washing it right now, according to the label instructions:
Don’t you also love how the makers of this dress were undecided about the size?! Is it a Medium or a Large? Well, it fits me! That’s all I care about!
Last Sunday I was able to meet up with two other Minnesota bloggers, and spend some time thrift shopping. Megan and I have been planning to go thrifting for a while, and when the blogger meet up got cancelled, out came Plan B! We went to several different thrift stores:
- Arc’s Value Village in Richfield (you really have to look if you want to find something, this is a great store to go to if you have a lot of time on your hands and you are in the mood for a “treasure hunt”)
- Turn Style in Minneapolis (overpriced for a thrift store, but the quality isn’t necessarily that great for a consignment shop. I personally prefer Clothes Mentor, we only stopped by at this location because we were having lunch near by!)
- Savers in Bloomington (It’s literally less than a mile away from Blommington’s Goodwill! So if you are going thrifting you can pack those two locations in one trip! But to be honest, thrifting in Minneapolis is located rather conveniently, there are plenty of thrift stores in one area or another )
I will definitely share what I got at Savers in one of my upcoming DIY posts, let me share what I got at Arc’s first, because it’s going to blow your mind away! (As you may have guessed I didn’t buy anything at Turn Style, hmmm I wonder why??? )
1. A Via Spiga Coat in size 4! And it was only $15.99, even less after my 20% off coupon, thanks to Hennepin County’s Choose to Reuse Program! So in the end it was around $12.50
It’s belted, super warm, I’ve been obsessed with it since the first time I put it on, have been wearing it since monday, I mean I am in love with the coat! And who wouldn’t be, check out the lining:
And what it’s made of:
I will take 70% wool and 10% cashmere anyday This thrift find just proved that to look and feel like a million bucks, you don’t necessarily need to spend a million bucks
My second coat falls into a vintage category, for some reason it fell into the “Halloween” category as well! But it turned out for the best price wise, it only cost me $1.50, though the tag said $5.99
Here is my vintage tag:
And here is the Wonder Coat itself:
As you can tell, it’s also belted! To be honest I put this coat back on the rack after I tried it on, but then something made me go back for it, and I don’t regret it one bit! All I have to do now is fix the button, it was missing, but was rather thoughtfully placed into a pocket, along with a penny (I was definitely lucky that day!)
So what do you think? Was it a hit or a miss?
And there you have it – the continuation to the never ending story of my obsession with outerwear! (I also got a new coat for my husband, pics will be up too for you gents reading this blog! I really hope you are out there!)
Have a great weekend everyone, I will be in Fargo until Sunday night, so if you know of any good thrift stores there, comment below, or tweet me
Yes, I finally did it, I dragged my husband out to the Sculpture Garden, which is “ahem” a 10 minute walk from our house, and also a place where we got married almost a year ago!
I mean it never gets old, so here are a few shots:
My legs are almost see-through – I guess I’ve over worked out hmmm But hey I am wearing a thrifted Saks Fifth Avenue Shirt, so that’s legit!
Can you find the fish?
This never gets old (maybe because that’s the only thing in Minneapolis to look at?) Also, sorry random girls, you are now famous on my blog
I told you taking pictures of the skyline never gets old
Plants are afraid of the dark too, they need a night light!
Lights will guide you… if not home, then well somewhere
One more fore the cheap seats in the back!
My favorite quote of them all!
Hope you had fun bumming around The Sculpture Garden with me! How was your weekend? What did you do? Where did you go? Who did you see?
Today was probably one of the best day’s off I’ve had in months! It started of with breakfast at Helen’s, then some thrift shopping. Then Napoleon’s with Masha, then thrifting, then mall, and another mall and Famous Daves… Well let me back up a little here
My most favorite store in Uptown Minneapolis – Steeple People is a must see for all thrifters. I have donated to the store a few times myself and today I finally found one of the pairs of shoes that I dropped off! I really hope someone buys them, since they are made out of water proof suede
Here is what I got:
1. This top…
… because I loved the back so much!
2. This top…
… again for the back
3. This Dress, I just thought it was so very Paul Gauguin:
But it’s really this brand:
According to Sammy Davis’ article “How to date clothing“, the wording “of California” on a garment’s tag indicates that it’s vintage. Now this dress only says “California”, it’s still vintage, just dates back to the 80s, plus from doing some research on line I also found out that this dress comes with a matching fabric belt, which unfortunately didn’t come with mine. But I have other plans for this baby! The only thing I am going to tell you right now is that the hem is definitely going to be shortened. And plus it was kind of screwed up, which also got me $3 off of this item!
So here is a tip – ask for a discount if the item looks damaged or stained. I’ve done it today and I’ve done it before at the Salvation Army!
Then I met up with one of my girlfriends and had this strawberry Napoleon goodness:
Now the latte is totally my girlfriend’s! I had an iced mocha and a mimosa – which felt so good at 3 pm!
Then we hit Clothes Mentor, which is another chain of thrift stores here in the US. They had a 50% off sale, so everything that had a little yello Sale sticker was half-price – best news ever for a thrifter like me!
4. I got this awesome Linen wrap dress:
It came with a spare button too, plus it was designed in France! Best thing ever.
5. And finally my last find – brand new Necessary Objects jacket, also half price, spare button also included:
Another tip about Clothes Mentor – start a card there, every time you buy something there, you’ll get a punch, if you bring a reusable bag – you get another punch! Once you collect 20 punches, you’ll get 20% off of your purchase!
So that’s it for the day, let me know which piece you liked the most, and don’t forget to subscribe to my blog to see how I style these pieces!
You all have seen my thrift finds from Goodwill Outlet, and today I am going to share how I styled one of the vintage pieces, that polka dotted “Lady Manhattan” top.
It wasn’t hard to do really – I threw on some shorts a pair of sandals, grabbed my vintage thrifted COACH bag and I was out of the door
On our way to Stone Arch Bridge Festival I spotted this odd number, I think she wanted to share her outfit with you all too!
Now If you didn’t know the Festival is free and open to public, there are a lot of arts and crafts booths, 3 stages with live music, and of course millions of food trucks!
And of course vintage cars:
Total Pin-Up:
This guy was making wooden bowls using a rope! How awesome is that!
I also found some awesome jewelry that I liked:
And some pretty cheesy garden accessories, too bad I don’t have a garden!
These were the most original wind chimes I’ve ever seen:
I also contributed to a painting, which is going to be hung at the Tuggs Tavern:
Here is Sam and I, aren’t we cute?
And here is another person I dragged outdoors with us that day – Blake – and yes, he is eating frozen yogurt and it was good!
