winter cozy

Happy December! Winter is finally here, it snowed in Milwaukee today, and even though it will probably melt away, I love it! I am taking out all my flannels, warm pajamas and hot chocolate. I am also counting down days till my winter break! Wait what? With the amount of days the company is giving us off, and the time I took off, I will have Dec 22 – Jan 1 off! How cool is that? I feel like I am back in college! I am also really excited to go to Minnesota for Christmas! Make plans now, before my calendar gets booked 🙂 Haha

Today’s look is a combination of a few of my favorite things: menswear inspired coat that I spruced up with a vintage bee pin, thrifted handmade cable knit sweater and Timberland foldover boots.

And there you have it friends!

Never go MIA if you are a Fashion Blogger

Having abandoned my blog for over 3 days now, thought I do have a good excuse, I promise! I was extremely surprised to come back and see that I’ve been getting relatively good views (I mean they haven’t dropped 🙂 )

Why I was MIA: I went up to Fargo, ND to help one of my best friends apartment hunt. She just got a new job there, and though I am sad to see her move away, I am really happy she is getting a fresh start! Congrats Kara!

I am also happy to report that all of the Christmas shopping is done! Sam and I ordered most of it on Amazon last night, and I shopped for Sam while in Fargo.

Another update, which is a really sad one is – looks like this year we are going to be having a Brown Christmas. It has also been raining all day today, I have just returned from running some errands, and even though my jacket is practically soaken wet, I was happy to have my rain boots around. I just didn’t think I was going to use them in the middle of January!

This post was originally supposed to come out on Sunday, but oh well…

Anyways, here is a post where I want you to talk back to me. I know there are over 300 of you subscribed to my blog, so please respond! Especially if you are into fashion and beauty as much as me 🙂 We are going to talk about things you really love! And of course they have to be fashion related!

I’m going to begin! I really love my…

 And my…

 And finally,

What are some things that you really love? Don’t be shy, share!

Thrifting for Treasure: It’s getting colder outside edition

Fall is finally here. It rained all day yesterday, when it didn’t rain, it drizzled, when it didn’t drizzle, the sky was gray and it was windy. Good thing I stocked up on sweaters and outerwear! You know how some animals start eating before the winter, to gain some fat? Well I am like that with clothes – warm clothes. Since I am not planning on fattying myself up, but rather staying the 117 lb that I am, I choose fashion to satisfy my need for warmth, that and my husband! He is a great heater 😉

I wanted to share some of my finds with you and how to style them. (Since I only do laundry over the weekend, it’s going to be a while until I actually post pictures of myself wearing these items, so just be patient with me 🙂 )

We are going to start with the sweaters. Both are Macy’s brands, and one of them came with tags attached! I love finding brand new things at the Salvation Army.

1. Norwegian pattern sweater

I bet most of you thought I was talking about a sweater with reindeer on it! No, I am far from wearing Rudolph on my sweater. I was never into the whole trend of Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters on my clothes! Anyways, here are the two ways how you can style a sweater like this:

a) with skinny Jeans

b) with a skirt and a pair of boots

I know that in this picture the sweater is pretty cut off, but you get the idea! Plus I have that exact same skirt, that I can’t wait to wear with my new sweater! By the way it’s Evan-Picone, a Macy’s brand, and it only cost me $3.99 😉

2. Tribal print Sweater

It’s a fitted sweater by Charter Club. With tags still attached, and a little sample of gray string to mend it if necessary! This was a $3.99 purchase, but it was also a white tag, which meant it was 50% off, Boo-Yah!

How to wear something tribal:

a) With skinny jeans and a solid color scarf

You don’t want to overkill the look with some striped or other patterned scarf, so going for a solid color is your best bet!

b) As a mini dress

These ones are available at Bloomingdales, but the sweater that I bought can also be worn as a mini dress. Though I will have to lose another 5-7 lb before I can come out in public like that.

c) with leggings or jeggings

I am really digging this whole nerdy look, with the hair pulled into a bun like that and some geeky glasses! If you find a norwegian pattern sweater that’s long enough, you could pull this look off as well.

3. Gray maxi skirt

This was the cheapest item in my cart before all the discounts – only $2.99. Plus it’s Green Cotton, made in Denmark! How cool is that!?!

So here are some ideas on how to style this amazing find:

a) wear it with a bright top, because almost all colors go well with gray!

b) go all gray

Don’t forget to choose accessories that will stand out!

c) Layer it up with white

d) Style Copycats

Hillary Duff or Ashley Olsen? You choose!

I hope you guys enjoyed my thrift finds! Let me know what you all think!

Xo,

ZhenyAH!

PS. The total price of everything was $11, but I paid only $7.22, thanks to the half price tags and the 25% off coupon that I got through the Choose to Reuse program!

The Fashion Rut

Rut!?! I don’t think I even knew the word “rut” until I moved to the States. It’s not something they teach you in an ESL class. But ever since I’ve discovered that word, I’ve started to use it more and more often – there is a make up rut, the marriage rut (aka my husband’s smart comments on the subject matter), and now, time has finally come to talk about the fashion rut, and all the things it brings.

I am usually very good at planning my shopping trips/thrifting trips/freecycling trips. I look for inspiration, cut out/print out some ideas, check on certain brands and off I go! Monday night I spent about an hour making a list of all the things I was going to look for!

There are 13 items on my list, I got 2 of them yesterday! The weekly show and tell of my thrift finds is coming up later this week, so be patient, I will also let you sneak a peak on how I prepare for my thrifting trips!

I am going to confess – I fell into the rut of  skirts/dresses and boots!

This look is so easy to pull off! Especially with my collection of dresses. I also dig the layering and the belts as well. Both of these pics are from a Sundance catalog by the way. I don’t buy their stuff, it’s too expensive, but the ideas are great! So if you have this “back-to-nature”/”nature-chic” kind of urge – check out their website.

Next I am guilty of taking advantage of skinny jeans and loose fit sweaters.

I seriously feel like I am turning into some “Fashion for Lazies” blog, so let’s learn how to fight and scream and kick and get out of a fashion rut:

1. Clean out your closet!

If you have as much as I do, there are probably things that you forgot you had! Usually the things we tend to wear more often, are the things we keep right where we can see them, reach for them and viola – you have been rocking the same outfit for a week! Congratulations!

2. Get rid of everything old, everything that you know you are not going to wear.

And don’t lie to yourself about “maybe wearing that sweater next week”, you are probably not going to wear it ever again. I do recommend keeping clothes that doesn’t fit! I also recommend hanging that clothes somewhere, where you can see them every day, and that should be your motivation to loose weight and fit into those skinny jeans! Now by “getting rid of” I don’t mean throwing it away, I mean – donating, swapping, putting it up on Freecycle or Craigslist. Some items might even be worth selling on Etsy!

3. Look for inspiration!

It’s everywhere, outside, in the windows of department stores, in catalogs, magazines, blogs – join bloglovin’, lookbook and get hundreds of ideas on a daily basis!

So there you have it – the RUT and how to get out of it! Now I’d better get to step 1!

Xo,

Rainy Day Outfits

This morning as we walked out of our building, there was smell of rain in the air! And the asphalt was still wet!

The smell of rain is probably one of my top favorites! And it inspired me to write this post!

Even though it’s warm and sunny in Minneapolis today and as one of my friends said “The 50 degree weather got me all excited about fall … and now it’s 80 again. Darned injuns. We don’t need a second summer”, I have decided to blog about perfect fall/rainy day outfits.

1. Boots with Skinny Jeans

I am really loving the blue jeans/brown boots combo! It’s not tacky, it’s classic! And I am all for leather boots for rainy days instead of rain boots! There are so many leather protectants out there, you shouldn’t even be afraid to ruin your boots! And remember – suede is perfect for dry and warm days!

2. Poncho Sweaters

They come in many colors and variations, with collars, pockets, and sometimes, even hoods! The first one is actually from Target, and is only about $25. I am not a huge fan of the one Jessica Simpson is wearing, but tastes differ! The last one is my favorite, I am absolutely loving the front pockets and the ribbed hem! And I couldn’t resist putting in this Missoni for Target picture in here for good measure, even though this poncho is probably only available on eBay for three times it’s original price!

3. Maxi (or any kind of dresses) with Jackets

I am absolutely in love with this trend, and even though most of my dresses aren’t maxi. I love the idea of transforming a summer outfit into a fall one! Don’t have a maxi dress or a skirt? Don’t worry! Just put some tights with your dress, throw on a jacket and a scarf and carry on!

I hope you all are having a wonderful week! I have more exciting posts coming up for you guys this week!

Love,

Thrifting for Treasure – Going for the Maxi

I did it, I thrifted to maxi skirts, which I absolutely cannot wait to wear! I also thrifted an amazing blue necklace and the cutest $3 vintage style bag!

Do you know what’s the best thing about thrifting? Striking random conversations with other shoppers.

Tuesday my friend and I went to the Salvation Army at the Warehouse District of Minneapolis and had several people there ask us what language we were speaking! (I do speak Russian to my Russian friends after all 🙂 )

Today as I was trying on a skirt at Steeple People, a lady told me I looked very cute. Steeple people doesn’t have a dressing room – so whatever you try on – you should be trying on over your clothes and in front of everyone else!

I bet you are dying to see what I got! Well, today I decided to surprise you, and put up a video, instead of pictures! So sit back and enjoy the haul!

Have a great rest of your day, wherever you are!

Love,

ZhenyaH
