Some of you were wondering whether I received a boat for my birthday last week, well not really 😉 The boat actually belongs to my father-in-law, and back in the day Sam and he spent a lot of time building it! And now sailing has become one of my favorite summer pass-times! And this time I made sure I packed my new Samsung Galaxy Camera I received from Verizon Wireless back in May!

When it came to picking out my sailing outfit, I went for one of my favorite DKNY dresses from Macy’s (yay for fitting into juniors size!), and my thrifted (Goodwill) white rim sunnies! I also braided my hair, because once you get out on St.Croix it gets really windy and the hair blows all over the place, in your face included!

I also wanted to share some scenic photos, enjoy and let me know what you think about sailing and any other kinds of on the water activities!

Another cool thing I was going to talk to you about is this new app I’ve been using called Mavatar. It’s an iPad app that let’s you shop and create wish boards, but at the same time applies coupons and any promotions going on in the store at the time! The creators of this app focus on higher end stores and brands (Nieman Marcus, Bloomington’s, Nordstrom) with a good mix of Macy’s, Gap, and Banana Republic in between! It’s especially nice to see Bloomingdales and Nieman’s featured on here, because they closed both of these stores in Minneapolis! (*SIGH*)

2013-07-23 20.15.03

The “main” page of the app (every category breaks down into more when you tap it)

2013-07-23 20.15.14

And this is where you can see how many coupons/discounts/promotions are available

And an example of a “Wishlist”!

So here you have it online shoppers – a great way to shop and save at the same time! Now that’s what I call smartshopping!

Let inspiration guide you today~

Savers Thrift Superstore Grand Opening in Coon Rapids, MN

2013-04-23 19.00.21

Tonight Sam and I went on a little adventure to Coon Rapids. We rarely go up there, but this time we had a perfect reason – the opening of the new Savers! I received a special invitation and a gift certificate to jump start my spring shopping!

The store was packed! Everyone who is a Savers Club Card holder got an email to attend this event! The parking lot was filled (good thing it was a big one!)

My number one goal was to find the store manager and get my hands on the rewards certificate! I also ran into another Minnesota blogger – Jackie of Teal and Lime!

We got a quick tour of the store, (THANK YOU, HEIDI! You were amazing!) and went on to shop!

As some of you may know I have an exciting event coming up, which is 100% blog related (I had someone ask me if I was getting married the other day 🙂 ) Anyways, there were a few things that I pulled off the racks, which included a size M Sisley blazer, a French Connection dress, a few vintage pieces, but I ended up not buying anything, because the line was ridiculously long! I think Sam and I are going to hit another Savers this weekend, and hopefully it’ll be a more calming experience! Plus I had to go pick something up from FedEx (again for my upcoming mystery trip! – are you intrigued yet?)

As usual there were rows and rows of clothing, shoes, books, household goods, anything that you can imagine! And there were people everywhere!

As it also turns out one of their first sales that night was Leaves of Grass signed by Walt Whitman himself! I was just thinking about him and that book a few days ago, his poem “I hear America Singing…” was going through my head…

It is a great store, reminded me a lot of the one in Oakdale (size wise especially)! There is so much to look for, that I know I wouldn’t have possibly had time to look through everything in the few hours that it was open! And even though this store is out of the way, I will definitely considering coming back here in the future!

I hope you all had a great day, keep on spreading thrift love and joy!

HELP! Early stages of hoarding?

I think I have a problem!

Seriously! Look at these pictures:

– Random piles of stuff all over the bedroom floor

2013-03-12 15.55.21

– Closet space

And I know exactly what it is – I am lazy, I don’t like to clean, I don’t like to pick up, for some reason I want to save every scrap of paper, every ribbon, every magazine.

I keep telling myself that once we move into a house, it’ll get better, but who am I kidding – it won’t.

But nothing motivates me, I guess I am just a slob. And it’s the availability and accessibility of products here. I can go to a store, spend some money, get more stuff, but it won’t solve the clutter solution!

I have recently started an Etsy store, and one of the main reasons was to downsize my vintage collection. And yes, I have made some sales, but what’s 1-2 purses compared to a walk-in closet full of supplies, patterns, coats?

Yes, let’s talk about coats. I have an obsession with coats, I think I have about 10 of them! That’s the problem thrifters have – you walk into Savers or Goodwill and see an awesome coat say for $30, and of course you want to pick it up, because in your head you are already putting together outfits, and creating InstaCollages! And at this point you don’t realize that you have another dozen coats waiting to be worn, photographed, pinned, instagrammed, facebooked, etc.

Maybe I just need to vent, but I also function better, when more people know about my issue. I don’t need anyone to hold me accountable, I need to publicly tell everyone that modern day social networks are giving me an ADD, and that my real life is starting to go god knows where!

It’s a 1 bedroom apartment for crying out loud, how difficult could it be to clean?

So here you have it, I fessed up, and am now going to go and vigorously clean the apartment, making several trips to the dumpster!

Have a great day everyone,

Z

Thrift Haul Where Shoulder Pads come to DIE!

Let’s call it my Christmas Thrift Haul! My finds are as unpredictable, as Minnesota weather! Megan from Mr C. & Me and I have been planning this thrift trip for a while, but last weeks SNOWPOCALYPSE delayed it. This weekend it rained… Yes, Global Warming is getting the best of our winters (I can always go back to Russia for that, but I hear it’s not going that well there either 🙂 )

I also dragged Dominika with us, and the clothes that she got is absolutely amazing! Especially (SPOILER ALERT!) vintage Christian Dior pants! But more on that later!

Our first stop was Arc Value Village in Richfield, where we found the Dior pants, as well as some Ed Hardy shoes. But being the geniuses that we are, we didn’t get the pants.

Then we hit up Goodwill in Bloomington, and Dominika found this amazing fuchsia shirt, and well, that’s when we went back to Arc to get those pants! Thank goodness they were still there!

Our next and final stop was Savers in Bloomington, and that’s where I ended up spending most of my “thrift allowance” money (Okay I just made that up! I don’t have a thrift allowance, but I try and follow the “$20 limit per store” rule that I stole from Sammy Davis. Maybe I should give myself a monthly thrifting allowance? What do you think?)

And here is what I got:

Fabric first!

2012-12-16 21.26.15

The top one is a really bright pink, and unfortunately my iPhone camera doesn’t do this fabric justice. The only thing I was really bummed about was the price. I paid $8.99 plus tax for 7.5 yards. Now the original tag was still attached to the fabric, and it read $7.50! What’s up with that Goodwill??? The middle and the bottom fabrics are meant for a dress I am planning on sewing sometime in the future! Hopefully soon!

I also got this awesome vintage pattern, and the great thing about it is – ONE SIZE FITS ALL! So come to me with your fabrics and we can make you a dress like this. I am planning on altering the sleeves, though!

2012-12-16 21.28.38

And finally the dresses! All vintage, all from Savers, $3.99 each! I love each and every single one of them!

2012-12-16 21.26.39

2012-12-16 21.27.03

2012-12-16 21.28.10

Of course two out of the three dresses came with shoulder pads, but I took them out faster than a blink of an eye! Now only to figure out what to do with them! They are so pretty, I can’t just throw them away!

2012-12-16 21.32.51

So? What do you think? Did I do well? Not so well! It all came to under $30! Don’t forget to check Megan’s blog and see what she got!

Have a great week!

The Love of Freebies

Oh Consumerism!

Alright everyone, let’s be honest, we all love free stuff. I know I do! There is a very good word in Russian that describes it – халява (read “halyava” or basically swag/freebies).

There are different kinds of swag, there are freebies that you get for running marathons (like mugs or T-shirts), but if you come to think of it, those aren’t really free, because you paid a fee to run the marathon in the first place.

Then there are samples (some people call them testers, I have no idea why, because those two words have totally different meanings). Samples sometimes come from a store, or you can get them in your mail. And samples are a good way to try put new products if you are serious about buying something. If you are like me, then you probably have a drawer full of shampoo/conditioner/body wash/lotion samples that are really hard to get rid of, because they just don’t end. Yes, maybe I am a sample hoarder, but at least I use them! I am working my way through all of those shampoo/conditioner samples that I’ve been receiving in the mail.

Then, there are samples that come with purchase, the so called Free Gift, and this is what I am going to tell you about. Actually I am going to tell you what not to do when getting Free Gift with purchase.

– If it says 1 per customer, it means 1 per customer. I don’t care if you are from China or California, it is 1 per customer. And if you think I don’t remember faces, oh you are so wrong! It’s all a game for me, after you’ve been coming to the counter 3 days in a row and purchasing the same thing every time! I also can’t imagine what you are going to do with 3 or 4 of those free gift bags? Donate them to Goodwill? How are you going to use up all the product?

– If there was another freebie in addition to the gift and you didn’t get it, don’t come asking for it for free, no one will give it to you. You can make another purchase, and we’ll all pretend we see each other for the first time. But do you realize how pathetic you look asking for that freebie? Especially if you start crying? So please don’t do that! There will be another free gift and more extra freebies.

– When you are nice, everyone else will be nice to you! No one cancelled “thank you”, just remember that!

– And finally, sales associates are there to help you, not to scare you away, so don’t be shy!

Finally, a couple days ago there was a “Beauty Bag” available on Target.com – and the ridiculousness of the situation and all the people who wanted to get it was rather comical. A lot of customers wrote on Target’s Facebook wall claiming there were problems receiving that beauty bag, but one comment stood out to me the most:

“Stop complaining that you can’t receive your samples! If you’ve been sitting refreshing your browser for the past hour trying to get the bag, you are probably a hoarder and have too many of those samples anyways!”

Kudos to the author of that message and good luck to you!

Xo,

Z

PS. There are usually free samples available at Target.com or Walmart.com. I also use mommysavesbig.com and sweetfreestuff.com! Good luck with your freebies!

The Fashion Rut

Rut!?! I don’t think I even knew the word “rut” until I moved to the States. It’s not something they teach you in an ESL class. But ever since I’ve discovered that word, I’ve started to use it more and more often – there is a make up rut, the marriage rut (aka my husband’s smart comments on the subject matter), and now, time has finally come to talk about the fashion rut, and all the things it brings.

I am usually very good at planning my shopping trips/thrifting trips/freecycling trips. I look for inspiration, cut out/print out some ideas, check on certain brands and off I go! Monday night I spent about an hour making a list of all the things I was going to look for!

There are 13 items on my list, I got 2 of them yesterday! The weekly show and tell of my thrift finds is coming up later this week, so be patient, I will also let you sneak a peak on how I prepare for my thrifting trips!

I am going to confess – I fell into the rut of  skirts/dresses and boots!

This look is so easy to pull off! Especially with my collection of dresses. I also dig the layering and the belts as well. Both of these pics are from a Sundance catalog by the way. I don’t buy their stuff, it’s too expensive, but the ideas are great! So if you have this “back-to-nature”/”nature-chic” kind of urge – check out their website.

Next I am guilty of taking advantage of skinny jeans and loose fit sweaters.

I seriously feel like I am turning into some “Fashion for Lazies” blog, so let’s learn how to fight and scream and kick and get out of a fashion rut:

1. Clean out your closet!

If you have as much as I do, there are probably things that you forgot you had! Usually the things we tend to wear more often, are the things we keep right where we can see them, reach for them and viola – you have been rocking the same outfit for a week! Congratulations!

2. Get rid of everything old, everything that you know you are not going to wear.

And don’t lie to yourself about “maybe wearing that sweater next week”, you are probably not going to wear it ever again. I do recommend keeping clothes that doesn’t fit! I also recommend hanging that clothes somewhere, where you can see them every day, and that should be your motivation to loose weight and fit into those skinny jeans! Now by “getting rid of” I don’t mean throwing it away, I mean – donating, swapping, putting it up on Freecycle or Craigslist. Some items might even be worth selling on Etsy!

3. Look for inspiration!

It’s everywhere, outside, in the windows of department stores, in catalogs, magazines, blogs – join bloglovin’, lookbook and get hundreds of ideas on a daily basis!

So there you have it – the RUT and how to get out of it! Now I’d better get to step 1!

Xo,

The Ж (A review of the Kardashian Kollection for Sears)

The following post is going to be my personal, and very subjective opinion on the Kardashian Kollection for Sears. It should be pretty entertaining too! So sit back and enjoy the post!

Yesterday Sam and I were at the Mall of America. We mainly went to get some shoes for him. We totally lucked out at Nordstrom Rack! So if you are ever at MoA – check it out!

Then, passing by Sears, I dragged Sam in, to check out the Kardashian Kollection. I was really eager to look at some of those pieces, especially because the logo for their line reminded me of the first letter of my name when you spell it in Russian – letter Ж!

Being aware of their Armenian past, I think there might be some coincidence there!

Now about the collection – a lot of black, white, animal prints (mostly cheetah), at least from what was available at that Sears. The jackets have the famous Kardashian shoulders, the ones that are curved up.

I honestly think they make you look evil, it’s almost like having horns on your jacket 🙂 The other jacket that drew my attention was the sequin jacket, which Sam said looked like it was meant for a hooker, and should only be worn by someone who works by the side of the road.

Now I think that was too harsh! I could actually see myself wearing that jacket over some solid colored dress to a dinner party or a club!

Of course I had to check out their dresses. This one stood out to me the most:

I love the white/black combo, and the illusion it creates – making the dress look like an actual outfit – a dress, a top and a belt. But I don’t really have anywhere to wear this to, so on with the observations.

Some of you know that I have been out on a hunt for some skinny jeans, since I only have 2 pairs left, and I am not ready to give in to the $19.95 offer at H&M yet. The KK didn’t have any pants, at least not at the MoA Sears, but it had some seriously trashy looking pants/leggings. I can see a lot of Russian women wearing those in RUSSIA! So maybe the entire K Klan (clever, right?) should go to the former USSR and launch their collection there! I guarantee – it will be a success! The strange thing about the Kollection is that some of the pieces that are in the store aren’t on the website! I knew I should’ve taken pictures myself! Well next time!

Jewelry was pretty cool! There is more at sears.com than there was at the store. I really liked this ring:

But I still prefer my statement rings to be more colorful than this. The bracelet was too big, but if you know me, you know how small my wrists are, as well as ring finger size. So I guess next time I should shop at “dainty and small” shop, not the KK, especially knowing how big Khloe is!

And last but not least – the lingerie. I have only one thing to say about it – Sam wouldn’t let me get it! Shucks!

One more thing that weirded me out the most (and I can’t find a picture of it anywhere on the Internet) was a plastic silver colored shopping bag with fabric handles that had the K trio on the front. They put Khloe in the middle in she looks like a giant compared to her two sisters. But to each it’s own!

Over all the KK has it’s hits and misses. There are great pieces, and then there are the not so great ones. I also like the sarcasm around the advertisements and the commercials: “Hey ladies, you look lovely in those sweat pants, NOT” We all know that everyones’ style is different, but it’s all better than wearing sweatpants and shirts with MINNESOTA written across your chest in bold letters!

The other great thing about Sears is their make up counter, it has never even crossed my mind to check it out, but once I did, I know where I will be buying my husband’s favorite shampoo (Burt’s Bees) and some new products for myself (the Say Yes To line is a lot, a lot cheaper there, than any other store!)

So go ahead, check your local Sears, and let me know what you think!

Zhenya H

PS. Sears didn’t pay me to write this review or advertise them on my blog. This is my personal opinion that I am sharing with you, because one great find is always worth sharing with others!
