{27 DRESSES} Dress 1: It’s my Birthday

Have you seen that Birthday episode of How I met your Mother, where Lilly goes –

And I am actually excited to be 27! But 26 has been really good to me! I like my job, I love blogging, I really feel like BeingZhenya.com has actually gotten somewhere over the past year, and it’s only going to continue developing and being there for you, to hopefully inspire and encourage you! We got a house, I mean who would’ve thought that a small town girl from Russia would actually be living far far away from home and doing what she loves!

I do get an occasional hater who comments and says – Zhenya, you moved all the way from Russia, now work at a day care, shop at thrift stores, your life sucks. And even though those comments get deleted, I just want to tell you, that life is what you make out of it, and I feel like my life is just beginning now, and it’s wonderful. I hope you all have a wonderful day today, and a wonderful life. And now a few shots from my Birthday that we celebrated with my family yesterday!

I have finally decided to stop caring, and start wearing my weekend aka nice clothes to work. You know when you have a job which implies getting dirty? And you start saving the better clothes for the weekend? Kind of? Well, there are only so many weekends in the year! And after wearing this to my daycare job today, and hearing the compliments from parents and my co-teachers, this rule stays 🙂

Rimmel’s Lash Accelerator Endless Mascara

2013-05-26 18.42.36 (1)

I have recently received a new product from Rimmel through my Influenster membership! And I was 100% sure I had to write a blog post about it, and then it turned out that I didn’t! But since I haven’t done a beauty post in a while, today is the day! Besides I love Rimmel mascaras and think that they are a perfect drugstore dupe for Bobbi Brown’s!

The product I got is called Lash Accelerator Endless Mascara (Grow Lash complex and fibres) in 001 black!

2013-05-26 18.40.54 (1)

It has one of those plastic brushes that I like, but if I am not careful enough, I do end up scratching the skin along my lash line (am I the only one out there who does it?)

2013-05-26 18.42.30 (1)

I usually apply at least 2 coats of this mascara, it builds up nicely and creates length! As far as the grow complex, let’s wait a few weeks and we’ll see! But if you want your lashes to grow, simply start taking the B-vitamins complex! That usually does the trick!

2013-05-26 18.42.41 (1)

That night Sam and I also went for a walk to the Stone Arch Bridge, and decided to explore the lower trail, which in some way reminded me of Congdon Park in Duluth, where he proposed!

Rock Your Denim Vest!!!

2013-05-12 15.27.13

2013-05-12 18.08.57

I’ve recently heard that if you want to see all of the latest fashion trends – go to Forever 21 – that’s where you’ll find them! And that’s true – everywhere you look in that store – you see something different and stylish, plus they have some classy pieces as well! I don’t really shop there that often, so those of you who thought I was now promoting for F21, think again! I did go in there during my trip to Chicago, simply because it was a free standing store! If some of you don’t know, I hate malls, just hate going inside, shopping there is too much for me (I wonder if you fellow thrifters have the same problem?), anyways, the one thing that I saw and liked was the denim vest, and besides if Jessica Alba can rock hers, why can’t I rock mine? Besides I saw this trend later featured on Chic Trends and I personally think it’s awesome!

The only problem was – I didn’t have one! So I went off to Salvation Army in the Warehouse district and found a Ralph Lauren one for $6! Just to compare, Forever 21 vests retail for at least $20! My original plan was (if I didn’t find the vest) to get a jacket and chop the sleeves off!

But here it is, my denim vest and the outfit I put together! We also went to Walker where my mother in law is a tour guide, so I got my very own personal tour of the two newest exhibits! Thank you, Sandra!

SAIC 79th Annual Fashion Show

As you know during my last weekend’s trip to Chicago I was able to attend SAIC fashion show! It’s a show put on by sophomores, juniors and seniors of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and they do a wonderful job! I actually have something special coming up on the blog next week, SAIC related, so stay tuned, you don’t want to miss it!

And the show was amazing! We all got to sit in the front row, take pictures and videos with our new Samsung Galaxy cameras (See Disclosure) and chat about the designs in between! I think the most interesting thing for me (other than the clothes of course) was reading the names of the students, and the different scholarships they’ve received!

Now I am going to let pictures and videos do the talking!

I am wearing: Dress – Diesel (thrifted)//Jacket – The Limited (thrifted)

Boots – A.N.A (thrifted)//Clutch (not pictured) – ETRO (thrifted)

Necklaces – H&M, river pearls (Russia)

I hope you were able to experience some of the fashion show’s ups, because there were no downs 😉

Dress Refashion: Maxi to Peplum/ Маленькое Черное Платье с Баской

2013-01-13 19.44.32 (1)

I hope you all had a great weekend! I was trying to be as productive as I can here at BeingZhenya and bring to life a refashion I’ve been planning for a while! Transforming a maxi dress into an LBD with peplum!

Peplum dresses are extremely popular now, but can be pricey. I found a JIL SANDER dress that runs for $696, and that’s the sale price!

Peplum also works for smoothing out the silhouette , and drawing attention away from a not so perfect abs!

That’s why I think it’s worth giving a try!

Now on to the refashion!

Back in my retail days (which weren’t as long ago 🙂 ) I used to wear a lot of black. So I thrifted a whole bunch of black clothing, and this $9 maxi no brand dress was one of the finds.

2013-01-12 14.35.07 (1)

It looks like a giant black noodle, doesn’t it?

The whole refashion took me about 3 hours. All in all it was a perfect Saturday afternoon project!

We are going to start by laying the dress out flat! See the two white lines?

2013-01-12 14.37.54 (1)

We are going to cut along those! The bottom one first and use that fabric to make our peplum. To make peplum you need to follow one simple formula:

rrThen measure 20 cm/8 in along both sides and draw another semicircle. And there you have your peplum. You can also vary the length of it, making it as short or as long as you want!

2013-01-12 14.49.40 (1)

Since I used the leftover material, I ended up with 2 semicircles.

2013-01-12 14.49.56 (1)

Now we are going to sew along the edges to make it into a full circle and hem the outer edge as well!

2013-01-12 15.42.44 (1)

TIP: Because of the fabric, I used the widest stitch setting on my machine!

2013-01-12 15.16.30 (1)

Next cut the dress along the waistline, add peplum and the skirt, and sew everything together! Make sure all the edges are aligned properly!

2013-01-12 15.43.24 (1)

You may have noticed that there is one suspicious bar of soap popping up in my pictures, that’s what I use to draw on the material, I really need to make it to Jo-Ann’s and get a chalk marker, but the soap has been working out great so far!

Now we are going to take in the skirt. The original dress had an A-line shape, and that caused the new dress’s skirt to be A-line as well, which I thought was too much! I preferred it straight. So I took it in on each side like so (about 1.5 inches on each side)

2013-01-12 16.34.22 (1)

Then I sewed along the lines on the machine, hemmed the dress and viola:

2013-01-12 16.22.22 (1)

Now I have something to wear to dinner Sam and I are going to on Friday!

2013-01-13 19.45.46 (1)

And of course it goes well with my favorite metallic belt!

I hope you enjoyed this refashion! I know I did, especially after hearing all the compliments from my husband! And he is my highest critic!

Jo-Ann Fabrics!)
