There is something incredibly satisfying when it comes to making your own clothes or accessories. And while I am far behind in my skills from all  my apparel design friends, there are smallish things I can still make or refashion when I have free time on my hands. This is the easiest poncho that I’ve ever made. It came in handy last fall when I broke my elbow too, because I could hide the splint under it. And the fact that it’s made from a wool blanket, helped me stay warm in November. Not as warm as I would’ve liked during this photo shoot though. My friend Ania of Alacloth and I always seem to pick the coldest days, but at least we shoot several looks at a time.

The Renegade Seamstress BurdaStyle Webinar

I am really happy to announce and support my friend’s Beth first live web seminar with BurdaStyle. Beth and I met through our blogs back in the day when I used to do a lot of refashions. She’s always been extremely supportive, always stopping by to comment and share her thoughts. She is so kind and optimistic, it radiates through her photos and refashion ideas.

So please join her on Monday, March 31 at 11:00 am EST for

Refashion: Inspiration and Projects to Revamp and Recycle Your Wardrobe

I know how excited Beth must be, and I hope you’ll join her for that online event. There will be loads of new inspiration and it promises to be lots of fun. I know she is planning this web seminar like she would be planning a party.

“It’ll be like we are next door neighbors hanging out for awhile. It’ll be like we’re going thrift shopping together and then working with each other to give new life to some secondhand clothes”.

Please head over to BurdaStyle to get more information and sign up.

I hope you had a great weekend and are not traumatized by a loss of 1 hour of sleep, because I know I am!

Layers of Leather // Thrift Style Thursday

I have been in love with leather. I should probably blame #StyleChat for that! And even though the leather I own is mostly faux, my obsession with it is pretty real. When Martyna of Spoolish and I decided to talk layers this Thrift Style Thursday, I knew that my $1 faux leather skirt had to make an appearance on my blog! There is a place in Minneapolis called Opitz, and then there is a place right next door called The Annex. Opitz sells designer and high end brands at a discount, The Annex sells everything else! When I found this skirt, the zipper was almost ripped out, but the skirt looked 100% fixable, and that’s exactly what I did! It is a tad bit too short for me, and while I was going to add lace to it, I decided that it would be fun to just layer it on top of the Philip Lim skirt I recently bought at Target!

I am wearing:

OASAP polka dot shirt // Refashioned faux leather skirt from The Annex // Philip Lim for Target skirt // Faux leather leggings from OASAP // Salamander boots // Golden toe booties // Philip Lim for Target tote

Layering is definitely something I am looking forward to, now that the temperatures are finally going down!

And don’t forget to enter my Giveaway, because the bag in this picture is up for grabs!

{27 Dresses} Miche’s Dress

Being Zhenya

Today’s dress is brought to you by…
Just kidding!

My friend Miche of Buttons and Birdcages answered my call to join the 27 dresses project and I couldn’t be happier! She was with me on Refashion Runway, but I’ve actually been following her for a while!

Here is what the dress is all about:
“I actually found this dress at a thrift store for $1.99! It was a little big, and way too long but I figured those fixes should be easy enough given that it was already pretty cute to begin with. It turned out to be an amazing summer dress 🙂

So here you have it a perfect thrifted summer dress that simply needed to be altered! Doesn’t it look great?

Happy Wednesday!

PS. Shoot me an email at if you would like to be featured in this project! And don’t forget to grab the button off the sidebar if you want to start your own!

Vintage Leslie Fay dress refashion (PSST! What I really wore for the 4th of July!)

After we moved, I have come to realize how much vintage clothing I actually have. Unfortunately I couldn’t wear some of it, because it needed to be altered or refashioned! So I decided to start with this vintage Leslie Fay dress:

I got it at Savers last fall, and never wore it because of the neckline, or should I say the lack of it 🙂 So, that collar was the first thing to go:

Then I cut a good chunk off the bottom, lets be honest, I still got some killer leg to show 😉

I hemmed the raw edges using some vintage navy colored trim that I had, making this dress perfect for the 4th of July!

DIY Friday: Florals, Florals Everywhere (two refashions in one!)

Today’s refashion is going to be quick and easy and as summery as it can get! A couple weeks ago I thrifted these Guess capris:

2013-05-18 13.00.08

2013-05-18 12.59.14

What an awkward length!

2013-05-18 13.01.00

But what an amazing floral print! Besides I’ve always loved Guess 😉

2013-05-18 13.05.16

The first refashion that I am going to suggest is a no-sew refashion. All you need to do is simply roll up the pant legs like this:

2013-05-18 13.04.53

But I already had a pair of summer shorts like this, so I decided to chop the excess off and hem each pant leg!

2013-05-18 13.02.05

2013-05-18 13.25.53-2

And the new shorts were done:

2013-05-18 13.07.42

2013-05-18 13.07.33

My question is – HOW SHOULD I STYLE THESE?

Please comment below 🙂

Happy Friday,

Graduation: My Russian Past + My American Present = Nothing has really changed!

Everyone seems to be graduating 🙂 Oh wait, it’s that time of year, so everyone is GRADUATING! Except for me, because I did it 5 years ago, from a school in Russia called Vladimir State University (the what? – yeah, I know)

I was trying to dig out my high school graduation photos for you, but I think I don’t have any digital copies, only actual prints that are still in Russia (maybe I’ll ask my mom to scan them – please let me know if you’d like to see what I looked like when I was 16 and graduating! I personally think it’s a hillarious idea!)

As some of you may know I graduated from high school in 2003, college graduation came 5 years later in 2008. And even though it’s been 5 years since then, I kept the dress I wore to my graduation! Isn’t it lovely?

Now if you have noticed, it has all this bling on it, the sequins, the fake rhine stones, a bow! I was originally going to cut it all up and turn it into a skirt! I am glad I didn’t take the scissors to it right away though, but removed all the bling instead! And when I put the dress on, I ended up with an amazing, versatile and quiet wearable dress! See for yourselves:

Dress – unknown brand (bought in Russia) // Shoes – Unknown brand (from Russia as well)//

Jacket – Club Monaco (thrifted)// Watch – Marc by Marc Jacobs //

Purse – Vintage Via Piaggi (available on Etsy)

2013-05-19 20.48.51

2013-05-19 20.41.08

If you really look close, you’ll notice that nothing has really changed that much over the past few years, oh wait, it has. I moved to the other side of the world, got married and became a fashion blogger, but really nothing else has really changed 😉

PS. Don’t forget to let me know if you’d like to see my high school graduation pictures! No, really 🙂

DIY Friday: Denim Rug

I saw an idea for a DIY denim rug a couple weeks ago! And I knew it was going to be perfect for me, because I had so many freecycled pairs of jeans, that I knew were waiting for their moment! And it finally came! Unfortunately it didn’t use up as many pairs, as I was hoping (only 1 1/2 or 3 pant legs 🙂 )

Here is what you are going to need:

– Old jeans

– Scissors

– Fabric

– Sewing Machine

Then simply follow my easy instructions and enjoy!

I hope this was nice and easy, let me know how your rug turns out!

Have a great weekend everyone 😉

Happy Spring everyone! It’s finally here in Minneapolis and I couldn’t wait to show you my latest outfit, which includes a refashioned vintage dress and my latest DIY tote bag, that actually got featured on CraftGossip!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and let me know if any of you are in Chicago and would want to meet up! I have all day Saturday to hang out:)
