Houndstooth & Vintage

Before there was snow, before there was winter, there was just me, in my houndstooth coat…

The coat has seen it’s better New York Days, but I love it more each day. Maybe it’s the discontinued line, or the store that went out of business… But the memories we share will forever be ours!

Beauty Swap 2013

sweet-summer-swap

I have never been a huge fan of beauty swaps, but when I saw one on Luchessa’s blog, I decided to give it a go! If you’ve never participated in a swap like that, it’s really easy, you just need to make time to talk to the other person, find out what they like, shop for them and mail it all out!
This swap’s rules were simple:
– $20 limit without shipping
– Mail everything out by May 25

The swap was international, but I got paired up with Julie, the author of Short and Sweet in Texas. Not only was I excited to save on some shipping, I was really excited to find out that Julie’s blog is a nail polish blog! I am kind of behind in that department, so she became my saving grace, updating my collection and nail care arsenal!

But before I show what I got, let me show what I sent:

A couple weeks ago I attended one of the Minnesota bloggers meet-up events, which was a yoga class lead by Katie of  Strawberry Halls Forever. It was an amazing experience, not only because I got to meet other bloggers in the area, but also because it was my very first yoga class!

248388_10101022935915191_1686039677_n

I have been doing yoga for over 4 years now, but never in a group! I am a loner (read cheapskate 😉 ) when it comes to working out. I love my work out DVDs and videos I find on YouTube (check out Fitness Blender – it’s one of the best resources out there!)

Now I got into yoga by accident, and let me explain how it happened! Back in my good old nannying days when I lived on the Upper West Side everyone and everything breathed and talked yoga! You see I was always more of a runner, and I loved my strength training as well! Remember Cindy Crawford’s videos from the 1990’s? Those were my go-to workouts for many years! My mom got me into them back when I was in 8th grade! And I still do them 2-3 times a week, though I’ve switched over to Jillian Michaels since then! But let’s return to the UWS though… I was really into FIT.TV and since the family I worked for had Warner Cable, I took advantage of it every day! I got into Gilad’s workouts, and Namaste Yoga by Kate Potter was on right after! So I gave it a shot and FELL IN LOVE! And have been doing it ever since! I tried other workouts by other instructors, but Kate Potter won me over!

And even though I’ve been doing yoga all by myself for a long time, I feel like it’s one of those experiences you need to live through as a group, so one of my goals this summer is to find a yoga class to join, so if you know of a good one in Minneapolis and western suburbs area, please let me know!

Another thing that I’ve come to realize is that I don’t really have any good yoga clothes, and to me being fashionable at yoga is much more important than when I go for a run. So as I was looking for cute yoga clothes, I came across C9 brand at Target!

3316

They have very affordable and stylish work out clothes, designed specifically for yogis 🙂 And if you watch their website close enough, you can get coupons and discounts on C9 brand pretty often!

3315

Show style and strength in this yoga top by C9 by Champion, exclusive to Target!

3312 Bust a (yoga) move in these stylish, snazzy pants from C9 by Champion, a Target-exclusive line of fitness.

3313

Love yoga? Or just love comfy, stylish yoga pants that keep you covered no matter what? Whatever your yoga pants-wearing style, C9 by Champion at Target has you covered!

3317

What gives you peace and strength? Whatever motivates you, C9 by Champion apparel has you covered!
I am definitely going to Target to get myself some cute and colorful yoga tops and comfy stretchy pants (don’t worry, those will be worn to yoga classes alone 😉 ) Where do you shop for yoga clothes and what type/style of yoga would you recommend?

“Old Hollywood Inspired” Warby Parker Hayworth Collection

THE HAYWORTH COLLECTION TAKES ITS CUES FROM THE VAMPS AND PRIVATE EYES OF CINEMATIC HISTORY: THE WILLIAM HOLDENS, BARBARA STANWYCKS, JAMES CAGNEYS AND DICK POWELLS. EACH FRAME IS TOPPED OFF WITH VINTAGE TOUCHES RENDERED IN OUR SIGNATURE CUSTOM ACETATE AND PREMIUM JAPANESE TITANIUM. IT’S A NEW TWIST ON OLD HOLLYWOOD.
Friends, “Old Hollywood” isn’t just a theme for weddings anymore! Yes, you heard me! Warby Parker has released a new Limited Edition eye wear Hayworth collection. I agreed to share this launch on a whim, maybe not thinking hard enough. But the collection couldn’t be more stunning, surprising, stellar, stylish, and well yes, everything that old Hollywood embraces.
Working on this review was a good opportunity for me to learn more about the company, and even though I don’t wear eyeglasses (Thank you, God, and carrots! for my 20/20), I wear sunnies, that they have plenty of! Sam, on the other hand wears glasses, and doesn’t wear sunnies, so I feel like I can spread the vintage bug onto my husband (he already thrifts with me, so why not go for vintage?)
Since my obsession with vintage is quiet obvious, this was a perfect collection for me to explore. The unisex of it all is something that you notice right away. But there definitely are options, which I love. I fell in love with this pair right away:
Here are some other interesting facts I learned about Warby Parker:
– It was born out of collective personal traits: a penchant for outrageous outfits, an affinity for vintage collectibles and a strong desire to make the world a better place. The creators have tried to reflect this spirit in the eyewear—bringing unique, vintage-inspired designs to customers at a reasonable price—all the while, providing a pair to someone in need with every pair sold.
The idea is similar to Tom’s shoes, they donate a pair of eyeglasses every time a pair sells.
– Their goal is to create boutique-quality, classically crafted eyewear at a revolutionary price point.
And that’s probably my favorite part! My husband has been wearing the same eye glasses since junior high, and every time I tell him that it’s probably time to go get a new pair, he always says that they don’t make those frames he likes anymore, and it’s too expensive!
– They cut out the middleman and the prices are extremely reasonable for designer eyewear! Check out this table:

Price of prescription glasses

– The website has a beautiful clean design, no unnecessary advertisements, which is always a good sign. My favorite section though was Our Photography, where you can see people, who wear Warby Parker Sunglasses, and let me tell you, they are a good looking group, or is it the sunglasses?
I don’t know about you, but this kind of visual information presentation always gets me! I am hooked, honestly I am! And if I had an extra $100 laying around I would definitely order a pair of shades. Unfortunately, all of my eyewear comes from TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Oh, maybe someday!
I don’t know about you, but I am already putting together outfits in my head featuring those sunnies, maybe just maybe I will be able to afford them by summer 😉

Thanksgiving Outfitters: A Thrifter’s Tale

I tried my best to combine something thrifted, something vintage, something blue (oh wait, that’s a totally different story 🙂 ), and something modern in my Thanksgiving outfit. But a lot of it ended being something borrowed as well! So taking all of the above factors into consideration, it was almost like a wedding! Or was it? So without further adieu, I would like to present my Thanksgiving Outfit tale!

Once upon a time there lived a girl, who was absolutely fascinated by anything thrifted, vintage, or, even better, the combination of thrifted and vintage. And every time she put together an outfit, it was a special day, a celebration of sorts.

The morning of Thanksgiving our thrifter had a task, which appeared to be more challenging than it really is. How many of you have ever adjusted skirt waistband? How many of you have ever adjusted an elastic in the skirt’s waistband? Maybe due to the lack of sleep, or to the overwhelming memories of living on the Upper West side after watching Macy’s Day Parade, or to simple lack of attention (that, let’s be honest a lot of us suffer from) she had to redo the waist elastic 3 whole times! But it was totally worth it, because the skirt was $1.50 Goodwill find. Important lesson learned: When working with a wide elastic make sure it’s aligned properly before sewing it together!

The skirt was quite see-through, but a thrifted $2 vintage slip came to the rescue! The picture of which will not be included, because this is an appropriate, PG fairy tale !

The top that she wore that day came from far far away, all the way from overseas, from a country called Russia, because that’s where our thrifter was from. And it used to belong to her Grandmother. Unfortunately Grandma was now gone, but the memory of her lived forever in that vintage a little bit altered top! Lesson learned: Spend time with your loved ones and carry on memories of them not in your clothes, but in your heart!

Completed by a Mossimo top from a clarance rack at Target, $1 necklace from Steeple People, and the latest refashioned tote our thrifter threw on her modest black heels and walked to the car carriage, cherry pie in hand! Good thing it was 50F that day, or was it?

After a couple glasses of champagne, and traditional Thanksgiving lunch/dinner with a twist of cayenne pepper, the family decided to step outside for a nice walk, to let the food settle and make room for dessert, only to find out that the wind has picked up and the temperature dropped to 30F!

The weather’s cruel prank didn’t stop the family from their intended promenade. All it took was some extra clothes from parent’s closet.

The thrifter’s  fairy god mother mother in law spared the warmest angora coat and a beautiful beret, as well as a pair of stockings to keep the thrifter’s legs from freezing off.

And out they went into the cold! To take pictures and have lots of fun:

… for about 20 minutes or so, because it was indeed intolerable!

Lesson learned: No matter how cold it is, family time is important!

I hope you enjoyed my silly thrifter’s tale. Thrifting isn’t really that hard, but creativity is a must, especially when it comes to putting outfits together. And the final important lesson of the post is – Don’t overdo vintage/thrifted outfit. Take it slow and build up your confidence as you go along!

Have a great Wednesday everyone, we all need a little fairy tale in our lives every once in a while! I hope something magical happens to you today!

OOTD: One of a kind Italian Coat

Have you ever been to a garage sale? I have, once! When I lived in Manhattan. It wasn’t even a garage sale per-say. I found a craigslist ad for a sale in Murray Hill where everything was $1. Maybe I didn’t know any better, maybe I am just that fearless, but that was one of the best sales I’ve ever been to! That’s where I scored my one of a kind hand made coat, which came from a flea market in Italy! I always wear my Grandma’s vintage pin on it as well (sorry you can’t see it in the picture, it’s covered by a scarf) but here is what it looks like:

This past Saturday was a super warm day for November in Minneapolis too, low 50s high 60s, just a great day to be out and about. Of course I had to wear my favorite boots (Sam gave them to me for Christmas a few years ago!), I wore an Old Navy knit dress underneath, which has a super cute pleated skirt – you can see it peaking from under the coat! My scarf came from Goodwill outlet in St.Paul, it has a paisley pattern, and always reminds me of the popular Russian motifs.

Of course it’s back to being cold here now, Saturday night it thunder stormed (yeah welcome to Minnesota in November) and Sunday morning it snowed!

I hope you had a great weekend! What has the weather been like in your neck of the woods? Also any thoughts and comments on the Outfit are appreciated!

Cheers,

Zhenya

“I miss New York” post

Sometimes Minneapolis just gets to me, all these women who wear see through pants and bright colored underwear, men who look like they came from a conveyor belt, patches of colored hair on dogs and people…

That’s when I look back at my life in NYC, sigh and promise myself that I am going to move back there someday.

And to help you understand what I miss, here are the photos and the outfits:

1. I miss the bull on Broadway, miss watching tourists take craziest pictures with it, and it’s balls, miss looking at it from the 8th floor of the building where I took my math class…

2. Miss hanging out with my girlfriend in Central Park, miss asking random (Russian) strangers to please take our picture, miss wearing my Converse, miss that pair of jeans…

3. Miss the fact that I could go into an H&M, buy a dress, change into it at the Grand Central Station, and rock it for the rest of the day exploring Columbia University and the UWS… My husband misses my blond hair (that’s for sure)

4. Miss going out, borrowing my friend’s clothes, miss Marquee, the best place to go dancing…

5. Miss going to Brighton Beach in the freezing cold weather, miss that Brooklyn Library with all the homeless people…

6. Miss Brooklyn Bridge, and not wearing make up in the winter…

7. Miss my Slovakian girls, miss this place, where some guy came up to me and said I looked too intelligent for this club…

8. Miss dressing up for a walk in the park, miss Alice, miss Twinkle Twinkle little bat…

9. Miss the reservoir, and all laps I walked/ran around it…

10. Miss “reading magazines” on a Sunday night in Central park… Look closer and you’ll see what kind of magazines I am talking about 😉

11. Miss going out – AGAIN – that you can never get enough of! Miss walking home all by myself through the meat packing district and not getting mugged or raped, miss taking Subway at 4 am, miss being the only person walking from 79th and Broadway to 82 and Central Park West

There are oh so many more things I miss about being in NYC, I can’t wait to go back, and one day I will, and everyone is going to know that I am back!

What do you miss in your life right now?

Xo,

Z
