Mix and Mesh

Oh no! My only mesh shirt is in Minnesota while I’m still in Colorado! I am driving home today but hate to miss a great Thrift Style Thursday! So here are some pics from my vacation! And I will post a mesh outfit soon! I’m sure the girls came up with something amazing this week!

August starts tomorrow! What???? Can you believe it? Only 4 more weeks before school starts! But let’s take advantage of the sunny days, play outdoors and have fun. I want to invite you to join #ThriftStyleAugust Instagram challenge. The rules are simple: follow the prompts for each day and make sure to use the hashtag! And you don’t have to post every day if you can’t! Also, as you may have noticed all the Thursday prompts match our Thrift Style Thursday themes.

So have fun with the challenge, hopefully it will inspire you and encourage you to go thrifting.

Until later,

That Gatsby Girl {Thrift Style Thursday}

The Oscar’s have come and gone, and it only makes sense to create a movie inspired look for today’s Thrift Style Thursday post (and a list of movies to watch in my free time)!

As you may have guessed from the title, I went with the 20’s theme so well portrayed in The Great Gatsby. Something about that era was always dear to my heart, maybe it’s the style, or the beauty, or the fact that it’s almost surreal, realizing how long ago everything took place… I love history, and culture, ambition and the role of women in that society. I love their outlook on life and how they couldn’t care less whether they carried their device chargers with them, because there were no goddamn devices back then. It seems like life was a lot easier, but a lot more complicated for us, people of the 21st century.

I decided on this black dress because the bottom ruffles remind me of the flapper girls’ style, the shoes have a chunky heel, just like they did in the 20’s. I am probably wearing too much bracelets making this look a tad bit costume-y. My headband is from The Annex, and the clutch is vintage.

If you were to create a movie/movie character inspired outfit who would it be?

Please check out other looks, and I hope we’ll inspire you to get out of your comfort zone and look for ideas in unusual places!

In Chains {Thrift Style Thursday}

I am tired. It’s been a long day. Wednesdays are always hard for me, because Tuesdays are my days off. So Wednesday becomes a second Monday of sorts. But I thrifted this amazing Ralph Lauren Dress with the chain print on Tuesday for only $8.99, and the shoes were brand new ($5.99) when I spotted them on the shoe rack at our St Louis Park Goodwill. And I saw that as a sign. That this weeks Thrift Style Thursday post has taken care of itself, and that I live by an amazing Goodwill! I was talking to another blogger about red shoes a couple weeks ago, and we talked about whether we should save or splurge when it comes to footwear. I think that I am at the point in my life, where I will be saving!

The wrap dress is perfect, it’s a thick fabric that holds it shape, the cut also helps create the illusion that I have something going on up on top, which trust me, I barely do (if you know what I mean 😉 ) I love the flow and the feel of it. When I pulled it off the rack I thought to myself – I am never going to make this work, but then I fell in love with it. And the amazing part is – the entire outfit cost me less than $15!

Have you found anything awesome at your local thrift stores lately? Do tell!

This weeks blogger challenge topic is High end vs. High street. And you guys know, I don’t buy knock offs, or replicas, but if I find anything resembling a design or an outfit, that I saw on the runway, I will definitely try and recreate that with my own items. When I lived in Russia knock-offs were really popular, and you could see 10-15 women walking down the street with LV bags, all of them fake of course. Now I am not going to sit here and defend the designer and the copyright, but it just makes me uneasy! A lot of stores these days make copies and replicas, look at Forever 21, or Aldo. There are plenty of choices. I choose thrifting, because saving up money for a Hermes or Celine bag, should never be your goal in life.

Happy Thursday! So excited to be brining another Thrift Style Thursday post to you today along with all the other girls! We are also excited to have Alex of Snippetswithalex and The Fair Trade Fashionistas join us today!

You can never have too many shoes, purses… too much clothes, or make up…  If you ask me, you can never have too many coats! I learned it the hard way, the good way, living in Minnesota.

Coats and outerwear are one of the first sections I check out when I go to a thrift store. Here is why:

– I am always looking for a new coat,

– I am always looking for a new VINTAGE coat,

– I am always looking for a new WARMER coat!

It took me a while to decide which coat to style for today’s post, but I settled on this vintage one, that I bought a couple years ago at Salvation Army. It’s not only vintage, but it was made here in Minneapolis, plus the festive red color puts me in a holiday mood, and I am so excited the holidays are right around the corner! So from the oversized pockets, to the side zippers, to the missing buttons, this coat has as much character, personality and history, as I do.

Happy Thursday everyone, and don’t forget to check out every one else’s posts:

I got shot… with a camera!

Some exciting news are coming to BeingZhenya.com! But before I can spill the beans, I want to show you some exciting pictures I got taken of me by a photographer. It was all from waist up, so I am going to leave you guessing what they were for, but I’ve already updated my Facebook picture, as well as my Twitter icon, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t recognize me 🙂

Sweater Story

2013-06-05 21.07.02 (1)

There is nothing like the smell of wet wool! It was a rainy day today in Minneapolis, and I got caught in it while I was on the phone making my next $16 haircut appointment at the Aveda Institute…

This sweater came from Goodwill in Hopkins last Saturday as I was thrifting for something striped for my Refashion Runway contest! It caused a big discussion at work today too! But one thing for sure – it’s one of the most comfortable sweaters you want to wrap around yourself on a day like today, and if this is the route our weather is taking this year, I am sticking to my decision!
