Third Eye

third eye third eye third eye

I have a third eye! Ragstock sells these awesome screen printed sweatshirts, and I couldn’t resist getting one to wear to class this semester! How amazing is the idea of repurposing a thrifted/vintage sweatshirt? I wish more companies would do that! It was so hard to resist buying it in every color though.

On the other note, Happy Monday people! Hope you survived the weekend, whether you love VDay or hate it 😉 As predicted, there is now a giant cake in my fridge, you are more than welcome to stop by and have some!

In my headphones:

St Jude’s Red Carpet For The Cure {Minnesota Golden Globes}

OrchardCenterPieceCandle

The only Golden Globes viewing party in the US took place last night at the Metropolitan Ballroom, and as you have probably guessed by the title, it was organized by St Jude’s Children’s hospital. Having lived in Minnesota for the past 2 years, I am definitely familiar with St Jude, last spring we had a trike-a-thon at work to raise money for the cure at work. But it was so nice to be able to learn more about what they do, what the survival rates are, and what their goals are! It was a truly inspiring night. The evening included a cocktail hour, silent auction, live auction (where a trip to New York with an exclusive behind the scenes access to Badgley Mischka show went for almost 20K!) The donations part of the auction alone raised almost 56K! And it’s all for the CURE! It’s all to stop CANCER! If you ever ever think about what charity to donate to, donate to St. Jude’s Hospital! And the families that walk through the doors at St. Jude’s, they never have to pay a dime for all the treatments their child is receiving!

StJudeMoneyRaisedForTheCure

It was also so much fun to meet and talk to Ashley of Crunchy Frugalista, and Jamie of Toys in the Dryer! You ladies are amazing and I loved swapping goodie bag lipsticks with you! And of course thank you Ali for making it possible for me to attend this event!

Happy Monday and enjoy the photos!

Zhenya

PS. I was really excited to see Brooklyn Nine-Nine get the globes, as well as Jennifer Lawrence! Who were your favorite nominees?

Lazy Sunday

Have you ever wondered what a style/beauty blogger does on her days off? What does she eat? What does she wear? What does she read?

This weekend, even though it’s been a fantastic, Thanksgiving, cookie baking with friends, 4 day weekend, I …

45967_10153598726765604_894635451_n

– helped Sam rake, bag and mulch the leaves for the winter!

– wrote and scheduled blog posts for the upcoming week,

– finished “Revenge Wears Prada”, sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada”, not as exciting of a read, but a good story nonetheless,

1476690_10153601266905604_2079744052_n

– started getting the house ready for Christmas,

Thrifted tree stand and hand made tree skirt!

– Played with new makeup (reviews, swatches and makeup tutorials to come),

– Made my first meatloaf ever!

– Had a great time lounging around in my sweats watching Sam play video games!

Such is life my dear friends, and that’s exactly what weekends are for!

What have you been up to?

Zhenya

I normally don’t do such type of posts, especially on a Sunday, but I wanted to share a little part of my personal life with you! I know that a lot of you are here for the outfits and the reviews, and I appreciate it. But maybe, just maybe today you are here for me 😉

I got shot… with a camera!

Some exciting news are coming to BeingZhenya.com! But before I can spill the beans, I want to show you some exciting pictures I got taken of me by a photographer. It was all from waist up, so I am going to leave you guessing what they were for, but I’ve already updated my Facebook picture, as well as my Twitter icon, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t recognize me 🙂

Mixing Prints the Easy Way: Polka Dots and Stripes

2013-08-23 18.04.20

I have been really into pattern pants lately. I don’t know what’s going on here, but I bought two pairs over the past 3 weeks.

Last Monday I scored these polka dot beauties from Goodwill! Nothing can beat $5 pants, right?

Unfortunately I couldn’t find anything to match them, so instead I styled them using items from my own closet, including a vintage piece that belonged to my Grandma.

How would you have styled these pants? Do tell!

Zhenya

PS. These amazing pictures wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for my Samsung Galaxy camera!

DIY Friday: Getting Ready for Spring: Color Block Pillowcase skirt/ Шьем юбку из наволочки

Don’t forget to check out this awesome GIVEAWAY!

What better way to get ready for spring than add a couple new pieces to your wardrobe? Today’s DIY is all about that! And we’ll be using an ordinary pillowcase for that!

2013-02-20 23.38.50

Here is all you need:

1. Pillowcase

2. A wide strip of fabric to add the color block segment on the bottom

3. Scissors

4. Pins

5. Matching thread

6. Sewing machine

7. Elastic

Start off by laying out your pillowcase, then turn it inside out, cut the seam on one end, now you have a tube! Fold out one end – that’s where your waist line is going to be:

2013-02-08 22.31.17

Once the fabric has been folded on one end to form the waistline I suggest you either pin it or fasten with a running stitch. Then decide how long you want the top part of the skirt to be, and cut off the remainder:

2013-02-18 19.55.55

TIP: Don’t throw the cut-off, you are going to use it to determine how much of other fabric you are going to need! It’s a perfect “stencil”, that will make your life a lot easier!

Let’s work on the waistline now. This is where you are going to need your elastic. If your waistline is wider than 1″ you might want to run two rows of stitching, just to make the skirt sit properly. The elastic goes between the two rows:

2013-02-18 22.18.45

Now it’s time to pin the other fabric to the main part of our skirt. I used bright fuchsia fabric, which you are going to see in a lot of other refashions and DIYs this coming spring!

2013-02-18 22.04.19

It’s also a good idea to add a slit to the back of your skirt, like in the picture above! And your skirt is done and ready to wear!

Thank you so much for visiting my blog! I hope this was a helpful and inspirational post for you! Stay tuned for more fun refashions, sewing tutorials, and DIYs.

Cheers,

Z

Four are better than two! DIY place mats tutorial

So here is what I do when my husband is not around:

1. Find a DIY project.

2. Turn on some TV show (preferably some comedy)

3. Focus on the project and finish it in one sitting, taking the step-by-step photos for my blog 😉

Friday night we had some friends over for dinner, and my girlfriend Kara said that I need more place mats, because I only had two, so that’s what I decided to work on!

I took one of the place mats that I had (it came from a thrift store, I think I only paid $1 for 2) and traced it:

Then I cut it out, and repeated the process 3 more times. I ended with 4 rectangles:

Hemming was up next:

That’s the long boring part, because you need to do that on all 16 sides of all 4 rectangles, and I actually went with a running stitch after pinning. I just wanted to be real thorough, and not mess up the lines!

Then I ironed everything, paying special attention to the hem.

Then I put the two and two together:

And sewed the sides together:

As you can see I did a double row of stitches, just because the other place mats have them, and I wanted to make the two new ones match, even a little bit 🙂

And TA-DA – the final product!

The place mats that I made are not as stiff as the other ones, but they are hand-made and I am extremely proud of them. My latest DIY problem has been starting something, and not finishing it, so this is a great mile stone for me – accomplishing something in a matter of hours! I am sure all of you DIYers out there will understand me!

Let me know what you think about my little project! Have a fabulous day you all!

Z

That’s Minneapolis for ya!

Apparently if you want to have a good time in Minneapolis, you call a travel agent:

Milk starts at 9 gallons at CVS!

And Calhoun Bike Rental knows just what to put between your legs!

With all my love from Minneapolis,
