Black and Nude

After a weekend of walking, Mall of America shopping, puddle jumping, and light rail riding, it’s so nice to sit down with a cup of hot chocolate, and think about everything that happened.

I often joke at work – I am Forever 21. Anytime someone asks me how old I am, I say I am forever 21, and I got some of the mom’s to adopt my way of thinking as well. It fascinates me that there are people out there, my age, with 2 kids already. But, I am forever 21.

The apple print dress is Marc Jacobs. Being a teacher, it fit’s me perfectly. I shopped Forever 21 for accessories, and the hat is something I immediately fell in love with. And I feel like I will be able to wear it well through the fall. The boots are something I’ve been looking for since last fall. There is something sexy and feminine about a heavy black shoe with a chunky heel, and skin showing, don’t you think?

How was your weekend?

Dandelion Queen

Saturday after all the rain has passed, Sam and I went to one of our favorite places in the Twin Cities – Lake of the Isles. If you’ve never been to the Twin Cities, that  is probably the number one place I would recommend you go to! We don’t have Central Park, like some of you, lucky New Yorkers, but we love what we’ve got!

And of course I had to take advantage of my new Samsung Galaxy camera*, and get some shots!

Here is to the 80’s!

We all love different fashion decades, and even though I am a 20’s girl at heart, 80’s fashion appeals to me and has somehow found it’s way into my closet!

Don’t be afraid of the Military! OOTD

It was my father’s in law 60th Birthday last Sunday, and since he is really into tanks, especially Russian pre-world war 2, tanks, and the armored vehicles that were manufactured in England and later exported to Russia.

It took me a while to figure out what to wear, but then I remembered this Maeva dress that I got from my friend, Mia, two Christmases ago, and this is how I looked:

This Week’s Finds: Clothing Haul

It all started with a trip to Salvation Army, unfortunately it was a miss for me this time, you know how thrift stores are. But then we went to Clothes Mentor (located in Market Plaza in Minneapolis) and Opitz (St. Louis Park), and that first store is seriously becoming my favorite consignment shop out there.

So here is what I got:

1. This pair of Chico’s pants, they are super light and breezy – perfect for work, especially during these extremely hot days. I already wore them to work yesterday and they seriously feel like lounge wear!

2. I also got this fabulous Eileen Fisher dress. I’ve always wanted to own something of hers, but her clothing can get pretty expensive, so I was more than happy to spend $20 on this dress. Plus it has pockets!

3. Up next is this Marc Jacobs top:

4. My last purchase at Clothes Mentor was this black chiffon skirt, it still had tags attached to it, and apparently it came from some local boutique and was originally priced at $145, well it only cost me $11.5 🙂

5. Our final stop was Opitz Outlet and it can be a hit or miss, but I scored this Ralph Lauren shirt, now if only the temperatures would go down!

As always – outfit posts to come! Have a fabulous day everyone!

Marc Jacobs, Aveda and an Awesome Saturday overall!

News #1: It’s finally spring weather in Minneapolis, it was a beautiful day, 65 degrees, yeah, I couldn’t ask for more!

News #2: I splurged and got that Marc Jacobs watch! Here is my new baby:

News #3: I got Brooked! Again! And you can get too! Plus if you tell her that you were referred by me, your $25 haircut will turn into $15! How awesome is that!

Here is Brooke’s info you guys! She is absolutely wonderful!

Hope your Saturday was as good as mine!

Sooooo I’ve been avoiding presidential elections in Russia (even though I could’ve gone and voted last Friday), we are going to ignore the subject altogether, but I respect your opinion no matter what!

Here are a few discoveries I’ve made about  myself lately:

  • I am a workaholic, surprise, surprise 🙂
  • I don’t like Ellen (yes, the one that’s Degeneres), I did like her wife’s wedding dress though 🙂
  • I am really sad they are cancelling The Nate Berkus Show, he was the only guy out there who knew what he was talking about – yes, people, THRIFT!
  • Black is becoming one of my favorite colors, now that I have to wear it 3 times a week, so if you see me wearing all black, know that I am not going to a funeral!
  • One of these days I am going to move back to NYC and there will be no more style to bring anywhere, because no one wants Minneapolis style in NYC!
  • I love driving around NOT in my car!
  • I am Russian, because I made great “pelmeni” from scratch for the first time last night!
  • When I wake up in the middle of the night, I speak broken English (a few months ago I spoke Russian, the US is taking over my brain!)
  • I am getting my Marc Jacobs watch in a few days, and oh I am going to post about it all over the place!
  • Cosmo magazine has no idea what it’s talking about most of the time. If you have any further questions on this issue – ask my husband!

Now if you are all wondering where is this coming from? Well, maybe Chelsea Handler has always been my hero and I am going to follow in her footsteps some day, meaning adopt a midget and start my own TV show!

Happy Monday everyone,

Fashion Personalities: Emily Sandberg

Social networks are an amazing thing. You never know what you get inside! Back in August I somehow started a conversation with Emily Sandberg, one of the most famous fashion models in the US and in the world. The conversation evolved around my $10 vintage COACH cross body, that I scored at a local thrift store in Minneapolis. We then exchanged a few emails, but lost touch for a couple months. Then I asked her if she wouldn’t mind me interviewing her for my blog. To which she agreed.

One of the main reasons why I wanted to interview Emily was because she is a Minnesota native, from Rochester. And even though she doesn’t live here anymore, I believe she can be a fashion and personal style inspiration to all of us here in Minneapolis and in other parts of the country. Another great thing about Emily, is that she is a mom, and she shares some tips on how not to lose your personal style after having a baby!

When and how did you become interested in fashion?
My grandmother gave my mother a 3 strand necklace that was made of green glass. My first awakening to fashion was thinking all night how I could wear that necklace to school the next day. What would be the perfect outfit to go with it. I finally decided on a pair of slightly baggy jeans, my Doc Martin boots, a white t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the finishing touch was stealing my fathers v-neck grey sweater. I considered myself to be the ultimate prep that day.

Was it hard to pursue fashion in Minnesota?

It wasn’t difficult at all. I signed with Kari Larson at Agency Models and Talent and started working with her. Everything she suggested I do, I did. Eventually I began to work and then I discovered a model could make more money doing what I was doing in New York. So I moved and repeated the same process I had just gone through in Minneapolis.

Who is your fashion role model or a fashion icon you look up to?
A favorite model for me has been Guinevere Van Seenus. She’s the SS12 face of Miu Miu. To me she represents everything a model is: image, strength, intelligence, experience, intrigue, mystery.

What/who is your favorite brand/designer and why?
I love love love Christian LaCroix. He captures my imagination.

Dries Van Noten captures my intelligence.

Lanvin is the epitome of elegance.

And for every day wear, I’m a Marc Jacobs girl.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’ve been called androgynous. I love men’s wear but I also love to mix in feminine touches and a bit of sparkle. Currently I’m wearing grey boots I’ve had for 13 years, boot cut jeans, a navy stretchy tank top, a James Perce aubergine undershirt, a grey men’s v-neck sweater and this seasons Calypso’s oatmeal sweater. I threw on my Swarovski crystal earrings , Elizabeth and James necklace and Cartier watch for a bit of bling.

What are your wardrobe must-haves?

I’m an accessories girl and I love layers. Must have for me currently are my Cartier watch, Rag and Bone Boots, Hide wallet, James Perse jeans, and Il Bissonti bag. I can fit my life in that bag, including diapers and an extra outfit for Henry.

What is your favorite item in your wardrobe? )Something you had to keep if all of your other clothes were gone)
I have a beautiful handmade ivory evening Italian dress from Mrs. Mullholland’s estate. It is exquisite.

What personal style tips can you give to other women?
Wear what makes you feel empowered. Forget comfortable. Forget trends. Forget any other fashion rules your momma taught you. Dress for yourself first, the rest will follow.

How can one maintain their personal style after starting a family, having kids?
I had to chop off my hair. I just couldn’t take looking in the mirror every day and seeing my hair not done and not having the energy to do it. I finally just cut it off.

My style changed because my body changed as well as my inner life. I’ve always enjoyed a relaxed style but now I’ve incorporated a more adult version of that.

Have you ever been in a fashion rut and how did you get out of it?
When I first moved to Los Angeles my entire wardrobe consisted of three choices: Marc by Marc Jacobs, Addidas track pants or beautiful evening dresses.

I think the best way to get out of a rut is to grab your most fashionable friend and have her take you shopping. Try on everything she tells you to.

I also like to keep a few key pieces in my closet that I look to for inspiration. I have beautiful Dries Van Noten turquoise beaded scarf that inspires me. I never wear it but it’s gives me direction. That and my collection of Louboutins gets me going.

I once again want to thank Emily for agreeing to this interview and for being an inspiration to me, and hopefully you as well!

You should never wear a red shirt with black polka dots because your friends will call you a lady bug

New week has come, and the polka dot trend popped up everywhere on fashion blogs. Ever since I joined Bloglovin’ and Lookbook, I’ve been able to keep track of weekly trends much, much better!

Fashion is like karma – what goes around, comes around. Polka dots have been around several times, today is when they return.

Even for people like me, who refuse to buy new clothes, and shop consignment instead, trends are a big deal. And later on in the day, when I will head to my favorite Salvation Army with one of my girlfriends, I will be trying to spot some cute polka dots wear!

Polka dots originally remind me of clowns, and circus (hence the title of the blog post), but they can be a lot more graceful and feminine. I had a professor in college, who said that polka dots are very sexually appealing to men. So if you are looking for that special someone, may the polka dots help you!

Seems to me a polka dotted dress goes really well with the red lip!

In spite the fact that polka dots have been around for decades, there are plenty of designers, who included this fab print into their FALL 2011 collection.

Here is some from Marc Jacobs:

Jason Wu (who will be collaborating with Target this upcoming Spring!)

Stella McCartney has also jumped on the polka dots wagon:

Even Valention is there:

In spite of having a rather extensive clothing and accessory collection, I am 100% missing out on the polka dots. So last night, as I was preparing for the thrifting trip, gathering ideas from magazines and catalogues, I put “polka-dots” on the list!

We’ll see if I am lucky today! Hope to be, because I have a sweet 25% off coupon to use at the Salvation Army!

For those of you, who are in the same boat with me, and are completely missing out on the polka dots, here are some “must-haves” for this fall! Hurry, you only have a month and a half of fall left 😉

If you are one of those who want to play it safe, but would still like to follow the trend, go for the scarf or a headband. For the ones who are more of a risk taker – go for the shirt! And crazies like me are going to end up in polka dots from head to toe 🙂

Happy Tuesday!
