Interview With Celebrity Trainer Nicole Stuart

Nicole Stuart Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Nicole Stuart, actress and celebrity trainer a couple weeks ago. She was in Minneapolis for the Fabletics store opening at the Mall of America that I blogged about here. It was so much fun to talk to her, learn a few new things about fitness, and of course hear about Kate Hudson’s fitness approach. Nicole has been training celebrities since 1997, and prefers pilates to all other techniques.

And while I realize that I am far from being a good interviewer/journalist, here are a few highlights from our conversation.

A lot of my friends wanted to know specifically about Kate Hudson’s fitness routine.

Nicole: I mostly do pilates with her, but it’s a mish mosh of everything, including TRX (which stands for Total body Resistance eXercise). We also used to run a lot, but I don’t run outside anymore. Kate also does hot yoga. She is open to trying anything, which makes training her a lot of fun and really easy, because you can give her a task and then she does it really well.

I also wanted to ask a few questions about my personal training routine, which mostly consists of running and yoga.

Nicole: Are you happy? Then I wouldn’t change a thing!

There are new workouts popping up almost every day, which is definitely overwhelming. How do you find the right one?

Nicole: I think if you are doing something for a while, and then start thinking “Ugh, I don’t want to go”, start dragging your heels, then you should find something different. But if you are excited to go, and are feeling good after, you like your teacher or you enjoy running with your friends, or whatever it is… I think we know what works and what doesn’t work for our own bodies. And I think we should listen to that inner intuition more.

With all the workouts popping up, there are probably twice as many new diets. Do you have any advice on what to eat before and after the workouts, or on meals in general?

Nicole: I always say – clean eating is very good, simple, nothing processed. If you really want to be strict – no meat, no dairy. Greens, greens, greens, vegetables, vegetables, vegetables. And you can get creative with that. I am getting back more into it after having a baby, so I’ve been a little relaxed on everything. However, I just did this amazing soup cleanse by Elissa Goodman, and I love it. I am doing it again! It’s a 5 day cleanse.

Of course I had to ask about living in LA.

Nicole: I love living in LA, Minnesota is beautiful, but we don’t have the weather element. I love the snow, but I wouldn’t want to live in it (Me neither, Nicole, me neither!). The cool thing about Fabletics though is that they not only have clothes for every type of exercise, but also the weather (freezing, or hot and sunny, you name it).

I was also curious to know if Nicole helped out with any of the product development or design aspect of the creative process.

Nicole: Unfortunately I don’t. It’s a Kate thing. But she asks me if I like certain things 🙂

Do you have any favorite Fabletics pieces?

Nicole: I love the Solar legging and capri, I think they are very basic, plus a new print is launched every month, so that’s the fun thing that changes constantly. As soon as I find an outfit that I’ll wear and wear and wear, a new month comes and a whole new set of clothes comes out. The bright colors motivate me to work out, I want to go run and jump, and be happy. The print also makes your butt look good!

Fabletics is opening 11 more stores this year, so I told them to make sure to invite me to the next store opening 😉

Fabletics’ Mall of America Store Opening Sat May 21

fabletics moa

Fabletics, the fashion-forward activewear brand co-founded by award-winning actress Kate Hudson, is opening its seventh brick-and-mortar store at the Mall of America on May 21, 2016, which is tomorrow 😉 I’ve always been interested in the brand, the activewear they offer, and the celebrities behind it. To be completely honest I sometimes go for runs in my husband’s old t-shirts, but I’ve been getting better lately.

I was surprised to find out that this is already their 7th store (and the first one was only opened last September), it’s pretty impressive for a company that started out completely online. But I am glad they delivered upon customer demand, and it’s going to be interesting to see the store and the full selection of products in person.

I guess trying on clothes in a physical store isn’t going anywhere for a while! Talk about the importance of shopping experience! The MOA store will offer

  • Mobile points of sale
  • Free shipping from the warehouses of out-of-stock items
  • Virtual shopping cart to help customers complete their shopping online after their in-store visit
  • Fun monthly events with champagne and a DJ to launch our new collection
  • Free, in-store workout classes hosted by Fabletics Masters

To celebrate the new store, guests will enjoy the following at the grand opening event:

  • 20% off all purchases
  • Complimentary “Live Your Passion” tote bags
  • Light refreshments, including champagne toast
  • Performances by acro yoga artists

In addition, the first 50 customers will receive a complimentary pair of black capris with a purchase.

The store is located on Level 1 South (S142) near Macy’s!

Last week I got invited to check out the new NYX store at the Mall of America. This is the 8th store the company has opened in the US so far. All the other locations are on the coasts.

Being a huge makeup junkie, and in absolute love with NYX products, I wasn’t disappointed with what I saw. The store is beautiful, offering a full selection of products (something you can’t find at Ulta or Target), knowledgable staff, iPads with tutorials that can teach you new makeup techniques. It is amazing.

I was extremely fortunate to meet the CEO of the company Scott Friedman, and learn more abut NYX from him. And as you can see from the photos I was absolutely smitten with him.

Overall it was a great night that ended with delicious dinner at Cedar + Stone. I highly recommend the Torn Kale Salad, as well as 12 Hour Braised Beef Short Rib.

Make sure to visit the NYX store if you are ever at Mall of America. It’s on the 1st floor near Sears! You can’t miss it. I also created a roundup of my favorite NYX products, check it out if you have a second!

Got plans for Saturday? I don’t know about you, but I want to make sure I make it to the Macy’s Prom Fashion Show at the Mall of America on Saturday at 2 pm.

I have attended those shows in the past, and even though I am way over prom age, there are always amazing pieces, both accessories, dresses and shoes, that I can wear to weddings or other events.

I have already started thinking about a dress I want to wear for my graduation from the U. Underneath my gown you know 😉

I have also put together a collage of top 9 prom dresses from, enjoy!

Disclosure: I am a member of the Everywhere Society and Everywhere has provided me with compensation for this post. However, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

MIA + MOA T-shirt Project

MIA is celebrating it’s 100 Birthday this year and this time they have partnered up with MOA and 5 famous designers to create limited edition t-shirts that went on sale last week.

The designers are Kota Ezawa, Jenny Holzer, Chris Larson, David Rathman, and Alec Soth.

I was able to attend the launch party at MIA last week (although I had to be reminded of it twice 😉 – thanks Emma!), and have been wearing the t-shirts I got around town this weekend. They are $25 each and come in fitted and relaxed. And just because I can, I am going to say that Jenny Holzer’s designs are my favorite!

Check out all the designs here and make sure to get your T-shirt at the MIA gift shop!

Black and Nude

After a weekend of walking, Mall of America shopping, puddle jumping, and light rail riding, it’s so nice to sit down with a cup of hot chocolate, and think about everything that happened.

I often joke at work – I am Forever 21. Anytime someone asks me how old I am, I say I am forever 21, and I got some of the mom’s to adopt my way of thinking as well. It fascinates me that there are people out there, my age, with 2 kids already. But, I am forever 21.

The apple print dress is Marc Jacobs. Being a teacher, it fit’s me perfectly. I shopped Forever 21 for accessories, and the hat is something I immediately fell in love with. And I feel like I will be able to wear it well through the fall. The boots are something I’ve been looking for since last fall. There is something sexy and feminine about a heavy black shoe with a chunky heel, and skin showing, don’t you think?

How was your weekend?

Nina Garcia Inspired

2013-11-23 15.31.43

Nina is wearing: Boots and Pants – Givenchy, top – Kenzo

2013-11-23 14.02.07 2013-11-23 14.25.52

It’s really not that hard to get tech inspired when you are a blogger. Technology has made it’s way into our daily blogging lives These days it’s easier to meet a stylish 20 something girl who knows all about widgets, plug-ins and writing codes, because she is a blogger, and she had to figure it all out.

But it’s so much easier to get inspired when you meet someone like Nina Garcia, who not only knows a lot about fashion and style, but about technology, and social media as well.

The new Verizon store at the Mall of America offers many experiences and opportunities. Last Saturday I was able to spend a couple hours there touring the store, and meeting Nina Garcia. Having read her book and seen her on countless episodes of Project Runway, I was extremely excited for the event. Plus it was the Verizon store, having been a part of their Style Voices Program for 6 months and actually being on Verizon, I knew I couldn’t say no.

The new store located on the second level of the Mall of America (E 264) offers a new experience to the customers. With 6 different lifestyle zones (from fit to business), it helps customers engage and take their experience to the next level.

And even though I consider myself to be tech savvy, the number one reason why I made the trip  to MOA on a Saturday (when everyone who lives in the Twin Cities knows it’s a parking suicide), was to get to talk to Nina and ask her a couple of questions about fashion, apps, technology and everything in between.

2013-11-23 15.09.19

What are some of your favorite apps?

I got a lot. I mean in terms of fashion one of my favorite apps is Lyst. I can look and I can find everything that I want. And it also gives me a lot of ideas. So I am obsessed with Lyst.

In terms of transportation I use Uber a lot. In New York it’s amazing. If I can’t find a taxi I always have my Uber.

Moda Operandi if I want to shop before everyone else. I also think they have things early in the season so you can reserve them and then buy, that way you can have them before everybody else.

I have Trendabl. I like The Cut. I like Shazam, when I am at the shows and I hear a song and I can’t figure it out – it’s great!

And then I have a whole kids section of apps that I use.

And WhatsApp I use a lot to communicate with my friends, especially because I have a lot of friends in South America. I’ve got a lot, I need to delete some!

Do you find it hard to stay up to date with technology and social media?

When I travel I get to spend a lot of time looking and surfing and finding new things that I can use. I used to be overwhelmed, I used to be like “Oh my God, I need to jump on that now! How come I did not know that?” But with social media being so inclusive, sooner or later it kind of weeds out what doesn’t work. So now I don’t panic anymore. If I don’t know it, I will know it eventually, because everybody else will be talking about it. So I don’t stress out anymore, but I used to. That’s what I love about social media, everybody communicates, everybody shares.

Do you run your own Pinterest, Twitter and other social media channels?

I do most of it myself, my assistant who is very close to me, helps.

What advice do you have for emerging designers?

You know, it’s really finding your own voice. Finding what is unique to you. I find it that a lot of young designers today try to emulate other designers, and that is not working anymore. As you know fashion is moving very fast. We need a generation of designers that are creative, that have  guts, because it takes courage to be unique, to be different, and to be yourself, without trying to be anybody else. Finding your own voice, and it doesn’t matter whether some people like it or not, it’s YOUR own voice.

But there is a marriage of art and commerce. Yes, you want to have art, but at the same time it’s got to sell. But I think that most important is really understanding what kind of designer you want to be, what is that message, what is your look. And it takes time. It doesn’t happen instantly. I think it’s a question of maturity, it’s a question of working and gaining experience. Finding your own voice is like growing up. At 15 or 16 you are a certain way, at 20 you are another way. So it’s the same way a designer matures. You start here, and in 5-10 years you are there, but it’s keeping consistency that’s a must.

How do you unwind? What is the typical me-time for you?

When all the kids are asleep, I can de-stress. I love my work, and I love coming home, because I am with my kids, and I spend my mornings with my kids. Maybe my social life suffers a little bit, but I do need some down time. When we put our kids to bed, then it’s the time I have with my husband, and that’s the time when I can relax. I can’t be out every night. I will read, I will surf the web, look at some Pinterest, I will look at some Twitter. You can lose yourself in that process, and it is very inspirational also, it doesn’t feel like I am working, it feels like I am feeding my imagination.

What are some of your favorite charitable organizations?

I have a few, Sloan-Kettering, which is a cancer organization, and is really close to my heart. It happened to me and my family, and I know it effects many people. And the other one is the Rita Hayworth Alzheimer’s foundation. Again it was something that was in my family.

So there you have it! I hope you enjoyed this interview and were able to discover a lot of new apps to check our!

Have a great week!

Minnesota, Say Bye-Bye Bloomingdales…

Saddest news of the day, they are closing Bloomingdales at the Mall of America. I will admit, I have never bought anything at Bloomingdales, but I was going to start! Besides having high end stores means more high end clothes for thrift stores. On the other hand, I don’t think that a lot of women were shopping there anyways, since pajamas and sweat pants seem to be the number 1 apparel item here in Minneapolis.

What are they replacing Bloomies with? 4 new retailers, and an upscale restaurant! I am sure the new restaurant will look great across from the Nickelodeon world!

They are also putting in a new outlet store. Maybe we should just make the 3rd floor of the Mall of America Outlets of America! I hereby copyright this name!

Hope you all had a great day, I sure did!

PS. Looking for a good Russian movie to watch? Try Night Watch and Day Watch, hubby and I will be enjoying the latter tonight!
