DIY Friday: It’s all about the Dress (easy sewing tutorial)

I love making my own clothes, and even though I don’t do it often, I still love doing it! And maybe someday, just someday I’ll become one of those people who can finish a garment in one sitting! Oh, wait, I actually did! With this dress!

I had this piece of polyester material for forever, it came from one of the thrift stores where I am a regular! Yes, you can buy fabric at a thrift store and it’s cheap and affordable, just not always what you want! But I really feel like I lucked out with this pattern:

After reading this Boho Revival post on Chic Trends, I was even more inspired to finally create my own piece!

There are a ton a ton DIY tutorials out there on how to make a dress like this! And to be 100% honest with you the fabric was intended for a skirt, but since I could pull more use out of a dress than a skirt, I went with this hi-lo design partially inspired by what’s out there, and partially affected by the lack of fabric!

I am wearing:

Dress – hand made // Shoes – Nine West Vintage America // Necklace – Old Navy //

Bag – Vintage (coming to my Etsy store soon!) // Bracelet – hand made // Belt – hand-me-down

Lipstick – Maybelline Fuchsia Flash

To make the hi-lo Being Zhenya dress I followed these simple instructions by See Cate Create

I just skipped the elastic part! That’s it ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope you like my DIY friday post, have you been sewing/refashioning anything lately?

Latest Thrift Finds

Here is the thing about thrifting – when you are looking for something specific – you can never find it. I don’t know if that’s Murphy’s law that applies to thrifting or what, but I’ve been looking for a black pleated maxi skirt everywhere with no luck. What I am looking for is something like this:

My problem is – I don’t want to pay top dollar for it, $20 tops ๐Ÿ˜‰

And I am pretty sure I’ll be able to find it sooner or later, because I really need it for work for the summer!

But let’s talk about my latest finds! These two scarves from Goodwill cost $2.99 each, the blue and white one was brand new and came with tags from a local boutique in Edina, MN

Aren’t these awesome? The yellow one is from Old Navy, and will be perfect for the summer! I can’t wait to wear it!

Yesterday I found some books, as well as a sewing pattern! Here’s what I got:

I get to keep everything but the I Spy DIY book, that has to go back to the library at some point ๐Ÿ™

I hope you are having a great day, enjoying the weather and what not! Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog, I try and post every day!

Blogging and Fame

I was so surprised to notice hundreds of links to different blogs and websites while leafing through one of the last 3 issues of InStyle. They included everything – from Hello Giggles to I Spy DIY.

But what does it take for an ordinary “small” town blogger to make it through? And by “small” town I mean anywhere, but NYC or LA! Are we blogging because we have something to say, or are we blogging to say something? I can put on my blog that someday I may want to become a Jew, will you take this statement seriously? Will you?

Sometimes things get discouraging. Look at Jenni from the mentioned above I Spy DIY – she’s been working in the fashion magazine industry for the past 4 years. One of the founders of Hello Giggles is Zooey Deschanel, who’s been the New Girl on our TV’s for the past few months (and to be honest I was quiet disappointed by that show, 2 Broke Girls totally take Zooey and her team of three men down!)

But anyways, back to the subject, or I guess to the question – Do you know a blogger who made it? Someone who got noticed and later rewarded for 5, maybe 10 years of slavering over the keyboard?

I mean you google “How to become a professional blogger” and end up with some nonsense as singing up for “pay for click”! Still…

Can you become famous by blogging or do you need to be famous already and draw attention to your blog that way?

Anyways, I hope you all had great holidays, and are looking forward to New Year and all it brings!

Stay tuned for some of this weeks posts. Tomorrow’s is going to be called “7 Dresses of Christmas” and later this week, I am going to teach you how to put a horse on a bag!

Love you all,
