Art, Fashion and What in the World did I go to Chicago for?

2013-05-05 15.37.58

As you know I just got back from Chicago, but not all of you know what I was doing there!

You might have also noticed this badge on my sidebar:

So here goes:

I was contacted by Verizon Wireless to participate in their Fashion and Style Blogger program a couple weeks ago, and at first it seemed too good to be true! They offered to fly me to Chicago, pay for my hotel, take me out to SAIC Fashion show and a dinner at a hip restaurant, get a chance to meet other bloggers, and have fun!

And to top it all off I was also given a new device to play with.

Needless to say I agreed to come even before I asked for that day off at work ;)

The device turned out to be a Samsung Galaxy Camera that comes with 4G LTE, a touch screen, a 21x optical zoom and a whole bunch of other perks (which I am going to talk about in one of my later posts), plus you can upload photos and videos directly to your social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube), it’s packed with editing apps, which definitely saves a lot of time! The only thing that it can’t do is make calls. And the funny thing is, Sam and I were at Best Buy the weekend before looking at that exact camera! So now my camera dilemma is solved and my husband won’t have to listen to me whining. Though he will be definitely taking more pictures for sure!

But I think I am going to stop talking now, and show you what the camera can do!

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Style Voices program and have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.

Shabby Chic and a Vintage Necklace

I know I promised a refashion to all of my lovely readers here on WordPress and on the Re-Fashion Co-op Blog on Blogpost. And here it is!

I had this Large Gap Body shirt for over 2 years, it was one of the things my girlfriend gave me, and no I was never that size, it was just that one particular shirt.

It’s inside out, and you can see that pocket on the front. Well the pocket and the length in general bugged me so much, that I chopped it all off! Pinned some vintage lace to the bottom – I used two different kinds – one for the front, one for the back:

And here is what I ended up with!

Here is another closer look at the trim:

And the vintage necklace that I got from my Grandma:

Can’t wait for spring now :)

Fashion Against Aids

As late as it is, today’s post will be related to today’s International Aids Day. And one of the many ways to support the cause and the fight against one of the most horrible diseases, is through fashion. I am sure a lot of you remember the H&M collection that launched a couple years ago. Today I simply want to raise awareness of this disease, and once again remind us all, that we are not made of steel, and aren’t immune to the most scariest of the illnesses out there.

 Stella McCartney

Dita Von Teese, Katy Perry, Róisín Murphy, Estelle, Cyndi Lauper, N.E.R.D, Robyn, Yoko Ono, Yelle, Moby, Katharine Hamnett, Dangerous Muse and Tokio Hotel

 AX

 Nike

And of course the famous (RED), which I am sure doesn’t need any photos, but I will post one anyways!

Surprised that the fashion world cares? I believe people in the fashion industry are some of the most caring and loving in the world, their passion translates not only into clothes and accessories, but into causes, charities, donations, raising awareness.

What did you do on World AIDS day?

Thrifting for Treasure: It’s been too long!

It’s been over 2 weeks since I posted my last Thrifting for Treasure. I didn’t want to do one last week, because I only bought two things, but this week’s haul, along with things that I’ve gotten off of freecycle and the items I thrifted a week before, should, all together, make a great post. Plus I was really inspired by Daniel Troppy and his almost daily YouTube haul videos.

The two items I bought last week were a salmon colored Talbots skirt and a cotton Gap black dress. When it comes to skirts, I have noticed myself leaning more and more towards anything high waisted and pocketed. And I know that I have blogged about it a lot over the past few weeks, so I am not going to bore you, but put the pictures up instead!

This week’s thrifting experience was a lot a lot more productive. I went to the Salvation Army in the North Loop district and here is what I got:

A vintage Coach purse, this one was meant for my mother-in-law, but I am not sure if she wants it, or if I am ready to give it up yet, but it’s absolutely stunning! If you are going for a Coach purse – go for the leather ones, don’t buy the fabric bags, even though they cost over $300, they still look cheap!

Next I got a Calvin Klein Dress. I immediately fell in love with this dress, the different layers of fabric add fullness and volume to the skirt. Plus I love how stripes go in different directions.

Remember my post on Trench Coats? Inspired by my husband? Well I just happened to find two trenches at the Salvation Army, and one of them is reversible – so that’s like 3 trenches instead of two ;)

The first one is a Jones New York Coat:

Guess which side I will be rocking more often?

The next coat is actually a rain coat by Ralph Lauren. It’s a bright orange color, which will definitely make me stand out in the Minneapolis crowd!

The last two things were a little hard to explain, but since I got those sewing patterns off of Freecycle, I’ve been dying to get my hands on some new fabric. And well – turns out they sell fabric at the thrift store. What a pleasant discovery! If you are not sure if your thrift store sells fabric – check the linens/blankets section – that’s where I found these two amazing fabrics:

Now I am definitely asking for a sewing machine for Christmas.

I hope you all enjoyed these finds, if you’ve gone thrifting this week, make sure to leave a comment with a link to your blog below, I would love to check your finds out.

Have a great weekend,

xo

My Coupon Experiment

Since we don’t subscribe to the Sunday paper, weekly mail in coupons are all I have, plus some in-store coupons, and the random coupon here and there I get from the manufacturer and which usually comes with a sample. I have to admit when it comes to in-store coupons, Target beats them all! The great thing about Target are sales/clearances which you can combine with a manufacturers coupon and a store coupon and viola – you have at least 40% of savings right there!

Anyways, I decided to do a month of coupon experiment, when every time Sam and I would go grocery shopping, we would use some coupons (I didn’t go crazy over anything) and write down how much we saved.

So it all came up to $88.62 a month, taking into consideration that we’ve only been grocery shopping 3 times, and spent around 50 bucks each time.

Now all the saved money can go towards… well, we don’t really know, but today we donated to the United Way, so I think that’s a good cause.

I am not an extreme couponer, and don’t claim to be one, I just like saving a few dollars here and there.

I might do another experiment like this, but with clothes. You know sometimes you find brand new things at thrift stores, like this black Gap dress:

The original tag was still on, with the original price of $59.95! That’s how much percent of savings? 99%?

What are the things you save one? And what do you splurge on? Let me know, I would love to hear from you!

XO,

ZhenyAH!

PS. I am also going to be appearing in the video Support Where you Live for Minneapolis Foundation holding letter “I” and waving :) I don’t know if that video will ever be up on YouTube, but I will let you know if it is!

Keep your Fleece to Yourself!

Yes it’s 36 in Minneapolis today, high of 58, so this morning as Sam and I were walking – he was walking to work, I was walking to get some exercise in the AM, I spotted the terrible, terrible trend, that does exist everywhere in the US, some places more, some places less.

THE FLEECE!

As comfortable as it is (we all know the feeling of being wrapped in a blanket that wearing a fleece jacket gives us) I am going to call your senses to cutting the cord between you and that blanket looking jacket you might want to wear to work. Wearing fleece outside equals wearing your Snuggie to work! Get the idea?

Places to WEAR your fleece:

At home

At home

AT HOME

Or for a run, if you are a runner, but I know that pro-runners don’t wear fleece jackets, they are too cool for that North Face color burst, and would rather go for UA, Adidas, or whatever the latest trend for super-thin, super-warm, light-weight, reflector built-in type work out apparel!

When NOT to WEAR your fleece:

In all other occasions :)

Here is one of my nightmares brought to life:

Here are some affordable great looking alternatives!

Navy Wool Coat from TopShop for $160

A BB Dakota Dedrick Long Overcoat for $145

Wool Coat for $100 from Delia’s

This blue color is also one of the Fashion Trends of NYC Fashion Week this year!

For more ideas on fall/winter coats check In Style, Lucky, Allure, or any other fashion magazine. Besides, ladies of Minneapolis, there are plenty of shops downtown, which you need to check – Macy’s, Saks off 5th Outlet, Marshall’s, Banana Republic, Gap, Nieman Marcus, and finally Target, even they sell affordable and better looking than fleece types of coats!

Good luck!

Hoping and praying for warm weather tomorrow !

Thrifted Jacket in Today’s Outfit

Continuing showing off (in a good way) my thrift finds, here is a jacket that I bought for $1.50 and wore today! Needless to say I boldly combined prints, and am proud of it!

The pants are from Old Navy (I think it’s one of the few things I have from there), they have these thin stripes that immediately drew my attention! These are the only Old Navy pants that fit me and look good on me. They are size 2, but they were kinda loose on my hips, so I adjusted the little straps in the back, and they fit perfectly now. These were on clearance when I got them, and I only paid $7! My floral top was a Birthday gift from last year, it’s Gap, and I absolutely love it! And finally the jacket – I think it’s absolutely amazing, has pockets, and plaid (which you can’t really tell unless you take a closer look!). So this was my outfit of the day, and I was so excited that the jacket blended in so well with these pieces from my wardrobe! I hope you enjoy thrifting as much as I do, would love to hear about some of your thrift finds!

My Gap/DIY Shirt Part 2

I just wanted to post a picture of this shirt in an outfit! The necklace is vintage, belonged to my grandmother. The before of the white shirt can be found here

http://beingzhenya.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/diy-white-gap-t-shirt-makeover/

Gap shirt, and the grey cardi were both freecycled. The jeans (Armani Exchange)  I am wearing underneath cost me $1 at a garage sale in Murray Hill, NYC!
