Styling a Thrift find (which isn’t your size)

Imagine this – You walk into a thrift store, and maybe after only 5 minutes, or possible a very long 2 hours – you discover IT! The thrift find of your life (or more like a week – if you thrift shop every week like me). But it’s too big, or too long, or too wide. So what do you do? I mean it’s a find you can’t miss. Not for the whole world.

That’s what happened to me and the ivory 100% wool coat that I found at our local Sal Val for $3.99 I have to admit, I almost left it hanging there, since it’s a Large and I am a Small, sometimes an Extra-Small. So you see my dilemma, right? In the end I just couldn’t let it pass. So here is what I did:

I went through all my other clothes in my head (yes, that’s possible, especially after moving from Russia, and only being able to bring 2 suitcases. I do still have some clothes in New Jersey, but I won’t be getting those until September) and realized that I can totally pull this outfit off. Let me show you the ways:

1. Heel it and Wear a bulky sweater underneath

I know it’s hard to tell (and again I apologize for the camera phone shoot) but I am wearing 2.5 inch heels that are successfully sinking into the carpet. You don’t necessarily need to wear heels if you are tall, but I am 5’6” and this coat was dying for some heels. The other thing – bulky sweaters are your best friend, it does get cold in the winter, you know (especially if you live in Minne- SNOW-ta).

2. Belt it

I got lucky – my waist line matched the waist line of the coat, so viola – a brown belt and off I go!

3. Scarves are your best friend!

This coat was like a perfect canvas I could play and mess with, if you find a coat or a jacket of a dark color, then obviously go for a light scarf to create the contrast. Be creative and don’t be afraid to stand out. Remember – there will be only compliments!

PS. I would especially like to thank my husband for stepping up and taking all these pictures. Honey, you are the best!

DIY Tank Top/Camisole Made Out of a Vintage Nightgown!

Are you wondering when this girl’s DIY projects will end? NEVER. Because, just like yesterday’s quotes stated – Life is a DIY project! So take it literally and make something similar to what I do, or take it metaphorically and turn the table, take the matters in your own hands, become the boss of your own universe!

This is the same nightgown that I used lace from to make yesterday’s lace flower for my DIY Vintage Purse project! You can learn more about it here

http://beingzhenya.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/vintage-purse-makeover/

Now this is not my original idea, I have stolen it from someone while surfing the blogosphere, and because I sometimes don’t pay attention who it was, I can’t give you a link to her blog, but maybe, just maybe you’ve seen something like this on the Internet before, and can leave the links to similar projects in the comments section. Just be nice, as I’ve already told you, I am not going to take full credit for this idea.

I want to apologize in advance – I forgot to take the before picture of the nightgown, yes, I was so excited to make that lace flower yesterday, that I basically ripped the bottom half off of it! Now there were some holes patched up and such, so that part was immediately cut off. And this is what I started with.

If you take a closer look, you can already see that I’ve already hemmed the bottom. This is a closer picture of the lace top (my favorite part of the project!)

It took me about 3 episodes of Chelsea Lately to finish the hem! You will be surprised, but I had leftover lace from the flower, the part that was originally hemmed at the factory! And that was the part I needed!

This is a picture of me hemming the lace, I folded the top part, and created a lace strip, that I later attached to the bottom of the top

Just like that!

It took me some more episodes of Chelsea Lately and Sex and The City to finish off this part. I didn’t use a sewing machine, it’s all HAND SEWN!

And a close up!

It turned out a little longer than I thought, which is actually a perfect length if you want to wear it as lingerie, but a little too long for a tank top. Now you all are probably wondering “Why is this looney tune making something to wear in public, which is obviously lingerie?” Remember Madonna? And the 80’s? Yeah!

And of course my fav 80’s outfit worn by SJ Parker!

And here is what my project looks like on me!

I added my Grandma’s vintage pin to add more vintage to my vintage!

This is what the pin looks like in it’s box!

Here are some more pics that I took in my new outfit!

And then I decided to pin my yesterday’s creation to my today’s creation!

Hope you enjoyed it, show me some love, leave me a comment ūüôā

Vintage Purse Makeover

My grandma was a one of a kind fashionista, as difficult as it was to follow the latest fashion trends in the USSR, she managed to do that! Unfortunately I don’t have a lot left, but I am planning on creating a post in the nearest future, and posting pictures of some of the vintage outfits.

A while back I found this purse…

It is made out of fake suede, and even though it looks pretty good in this picture, it looked worse in real life. There were some yellow stains, seemed like it was caught in the rain, so I decided to dye it, with some suede spray paint that you can usually find in a shoe store. I went for dark gray. And it ended up looking like this!

The flower on the side was an addition I made today out of some vintage lace I cut off an old nighty. It’s a pin, so you can wear it on the purse, on your clothes or even in your hair.

This is how it was made…

I combined two strips of lace and sewed them together, to make it look like this…

Then I just kept on adding layers, and this is what the final product looks like…

And from the back…

You can see the little pin attached (I have no idea where all my bigger pins disappeared to)!

This is how the flower looks on my “The Limited” sweater

And on the purse with me carrying it…

And one more…

10 Things to do This Spring!

I love spring! Wait… I LOVE SPRING!!!!

This was better! And I am extremely excited that tomorrow is the first day of spring! And even though it snowed like crazy here in Russia yesterday, my hopes are up, and I know that “the Spring is a Coming”!

Now this spring I have decided to challenge myself to do these 10 things, and you are more than welcome to do them with me, because it’s going to be FUN!

1. Create Spring Art!

I came across this beautiful watercolor pastel of Cherry Blossom trees in Central Park, painted by a Brooklyn artist. And I was so inspired and moved by it, that I decided to create some spring art of my own!

You can learn more about the artist here http://mosleyart.blogspot.com

2. Wear florals, or bright colors!

I have noticed that lately I’ve been wearing a lot of blacks and grays, and decided to brighten up my life and my outfits this season. I found a great inspiration on¬†www.fashionfame.com

Love the parrots!

3. Hear the birds singing!

I wake up to birds, there are two trees outside my window, that seem to attract the most annoying kinds of birds – crows and jackdaws. But I found this amazing video and you can hear the birds singing no matter where in the midst of the busy city jungle you are!

4. Eat Healthy!

Am I the only person in the world who didn’t know about all the amazing resources¬†www.livestrong.com has to offer? I found some great homemade hair care recipes yesterday, that I have mentioned in my previous post. But there is also a giant section on healthy eating, recipes included! So let’s all eat healthier this spring!

5. Do Some Yoga!

Whether you choose to follow the lifestyle of a yogi, or simply do some exercises to become more fit, you won’t regret it. I have already mentioned Namaste Yoga by Kate Potter. My new favorite is Yoga with Rodne Yee! If you are a Mac lover like me, check out some great Yoga Apps that are out there! And remember – stay motivated!

6. Begin your day with Laughter!

I learned this from Sam, he always checks what I call “his” websites with some comics, funnies, or humor! There is a great blog here on WordPress, that makes me laugh so hard, esp. the latest post on Easter Bunnies, make sure to check it out!¬†http://ske‚Äčtchybunnie‚Äčs.com/

Some other websites that I like are:

http://explosm.net

http://www.collegehumor.com/

http://theoatmeal.com/

And don’t forget about the many many videos on YouTube of Kathy Griffin, Dane Cook, and other great comedians out there!

7. Believe!

Believe in God, believe in yourself, believe in others! Believe that you can, that you have the strength, the ability! Believe in opportunities, chances, fate! Believe in good, love, hope!

8. Take up a New Hobby!

One of my friends and fellow bloggers has recently started making her own soap, you can check it out here!

http://yourprofessionaltranslator.blogspot.com/2011/03/my-progess-in-making-soap.html

There are millions other hobbies out there! My mom does quilling! Here is a link to her website! I know that it’s all in Russian, but you can still see the works and how they are made!

Check out this link with a list of hobbies!

9. Plant an Herb Garden!

I always felt iffy towards house plants, but I love herbs, they smell great, and make food taste so much better! I am planning on planting a small herb garden and put on my kitchen windowsill! (Pictures coming soon!) I also believe that working with your hands, planting, gardening (which I don’t think I will be doing anytime soon) is good for your body, health and mind! And the smells of fresh herbs are also known to be great mood enhancers!

10. Redecorate your house, room, wall, table, shelf, ANYTHING for SPRING!

I found this amazing blog, that has some great redecorating ideas, the picture above shows a craft room, but there are other ideas there as well

http://itsy-bits-and-pieces.blogspot.com

I am planning on redecorating my TV stand, and maybe my desk! I am tired of the old dark brown color, and want to make it more vivid and exciting! (Pictures and DIYs to come!)

I hope you all enjoyed these ideas, and will be willing to give some of them a shot! Make sure to get back to me and tell me what changes you’ve made and whether you found this post helpful!

60’s Fashion

I wanted to write a post about vintage fashion for a while now. And I am finally able to do so with the help of the old fashion magazines that I found in my house. Some of the magazines date back to 1960’s! Isn’t that amazing? I have went through 2 out of the 4 stacks of those magazines, and divided them by decades. Today’s post is about the 60’s.

These are the two magazines I have, the one on the right from 1961. It’s a 50 year old fashion magazine! Can you believe it? It’s from an International Fashion Congress. The one on the left is from the Tallinn Fashion House, dating as far back as 1968/69.

I wanted to show you these wonderful (and my personal favorite) models of floral dresses first.

I also love the hair in the picture above, remember – The Higher The Hair, The Closer You Are To Heaven!

Up next is this gorgeous evening gown.

I love how gloves go with basically every dress, I wish more people would wear gloves like these out in public today!

Here is some outer wear, from 1968/69, love the plaid scarf!

Next up are some shoes and accessories

I also wanted to show you a fashion faux pas, I hope none of you will ever have to encounter a person wearing this! Nobody wants to look like a walking mattress, or do they?

My Gap/DIY Shirt Part 2

I just wanted to post a picture of this shirt in an outfit! The necklace is vintage, belonged to my grandmother. The before of the white shirt can be found here

http://beingzhenya.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/diy-white-gap-t-shirt-makeover/

Gap shirt, and the grey cardi were both freecycled. The jeans (Armani Exchange)  I am wearing underneath cost me $1 at a garage sale in Murray Hill, NYC!
