Last Saturday Sam and I had a photoshoot in downtown Minneapolis with our friend Chan (he took our graduation photos). He asked us if it would be okay for him to photograph us as a couple. I have no idea how Sam agreed to that, but when Chan sent us some ideas Sam said he was going to put his own spin on it. Needless to say, I’ve never laughed so hard in my life during the shoot and after it when the photos were ready. So here is to Sam, thanks for being a part of my life for 10 years, and being married to me and handling my crazy, and making sure none of this blogging bullshit gets to my head for almost 5! And to Chan, who captured the relationship dynamics perfectly!
Today I want you to meet a wonderfully talented eco-minded local Minneapolis fabric designer Josi Severson, who founded Home Fashion Fabrics in order to provide fabrics that separated all perceptions of any specific style or trend. Josi lets each person pick designs based on their own personal styles to perfectly accommodate their unique circumstances and environments. Josi speaks volumes in her graphic, hand-drawn designs. She chose to join the world of design because: “I have something to say. It’s a conversation I want to be a part of.” Her style has been described both as Scandinavian and African-influenced. “I enjoy clean lines balanced with uninhibited use of color and texture like you see in textiles of those regions,” Severson says. “I’ve been to both areas and have been so inspired by the people and styles.”
And Josi has an idea. An amazing idea for a dress, that’s unique and universal at the same time. It can be styled in so many different ways, dressed up or down, worn all year round. But the best part of it all is – it’s made from organic cotton printed in the US, which is thick and heavy, so nice to the touch, and will look great on almost all body types! Josi’s idea led her to creating a Kickstarter campaign, that will help fund the dress project! There are 10 days left in the campaign, so if you like the idea and the dress, please show your support. The dress will be available in 6 different prints.
I had an awesome opportunity to visit Josi in her showroom at 1008 Marquette Ave S in downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday, try on the sample dress, and talk a little fashion, DIY and life in general. And I got to meet Austin, which was a great big bonus, if you ask me! So if you are in downtown and have a few minutes to spare, stop by Josi’s Home Fashion Fabrics, and step out of the crazy busy life into an atmosphere of comfort and relaxation, something that I have only found in one other place in the States – Brooklyn.
Follow Josi on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest for amazing prints, inspirations, and decor ideas. And if you are in downtown Minneapolis, make sure to visit the showroom. If you were to pick a pattern for the dress, which one would you pick?
And don’t forget to connect with me on:
I had an amazing opportunity to visit and get a hair cut in one of St Louis Park newest (opened in February) salons called STRAND!
I’ll give you a little tour and then talk more about the products and my hair cut experience!
Look at this beautiful space:
All of the art is done by a local artist Adam Truman (he did the graffiti over at The Butcher and The Boar on Hennepin Ave in downtown Minneapolis, and that’s how I recognized him)!
In fact when I was talking to Derek (owner) he said that he wanted to have as many local artists, designers, distributors involved as he could! And I really applaud him for keeping it local!
And of course I had to take a picture of the nail polishes:
My stylist Emily was a doll! We bonded right away talking about New York City, where we both used to live.
I personally think she did a great job! I am not necessarily picky about who does my hair. And I’ve been sticking to “layers” for as long as I can remember. I think the most important factor for me was for the layers to be blended in really well. And to keep as much of the length as possible, because it weighs my hair down and minimizes the frizz!
I loved the products that she used, Keune. And even though I’ve never heard of that line before, once I found out it was European, I knew I had the right stuff on my hair. Plus it smelt so good! I seriously couldn’t stop smelling it for the rest of the night!
Sam, of course, was the one who had the final say, and he gave his stamp of approval by saying – I love your HUR!
Just one thing people: How on earth do you curl your hair with a flat iron? I seriously need to learn!!!
Thank you Emily for my amazing hair cut, and everyone at STRAND, who is making St Louis Park a stylish and hopping place to live!
Disclousure: I am participating in a Verizon Wireless blogger program, and received the device and 6 months of service for free, in exchange for my honest opinion. For more information, please click on the Verizon Voices Icon!
PS. They are kid friendly too! Just look at that MINI!!!
All pictures taken with my Samsung Galaxy Camera! The camera that people always ask about 😉
I have recently received a new product from Rimmel through my Influenster membership! And I was 100% sure I had to write a blog post about it, and then it turned out that I didn’t! But since I haven’t done a beauty post in a while, today is the day! Besides I love Rimmel mascaras and think that they are a perfect drugstore dupe for Bobbi Brown’s!
The product I got is called Lash Accelerator Endless Mascara (Grow Lash complex and fibres) in 001 black!
It has one of those plastic brushes that I like, but if I am not careful enough, I do end up scratching the skin along my lash line (am I the only one out there who does it?)
I usually apply at least 2 coats of this mascara, it builds up nicely and creates length! As far as the grow complex, let’s wait a few weeks and we’ll see! But if you want your lashes to grow, simply start taking the B-vitamins complex! That usually does the trick!
That night Sam and I also went for a walk to the Stone Arch Bridge, and decided to explore the lower trail, which in some way reminded me of Congdon Park in Duluth, where he proposed!
I am wearing:
Shoes and Bag – Fashionol // Jeans – Doll House // Tank – Forever 21 // Sweater – Voices of Europe //
Oversized jacket – Land’s End
Have a great Thursday everyone! And remember – it’s almost FRIDAY!
PS. I am also accepting honest opinions about the shoes and the bag! These products were sent to me for review in exchange for my honest opinion!
Everyone knows that these days it’s the baggier the better, to a certain extent of course! When I put something oversized on top, I make sure to go skinny on the bottom, and this is how it usually turns out:
Top – Old Navy size M (it’s HUGE!) but since it was bought on sale for a ridiculously small amount of money, and they didn’t have size S anywhere, I got it. It’s comfy and soft, almost at the point where I want to wear it around the house with a pair of sweats, but am fighting this urge!
Jeans – X2 Denim by Express, thrifted at Savers, $8
Scarf – Christmas gift from a few years ago
Floral necklace – Gofavor.com, that necklace was ordered for about $4 back in the day when I went through – Let’s order as much cheap
crap costume jewelry from China as I can. If I could, I would return every single product I ordered there, because… well you see the crossed out word above! The metal is so cheap it fades away after 2 or 3 uses. This necklace has been kind of okay, but I don’t want to jinx it here! So I’ll keep wearing it out and about, and maybe later you’ll see it in one of my DIY projects!
Boots – Christmas gift from Sam 🙂 <3
And of course my Marc Jacobs Watch! I have to wear it, everyday, yes, that’s how much I like that watch!
On the other note, winter isn’t going anywhere here in Minneapolis. After a snow thunderstorm last Thursday I am hopeless, on the verge of depression, someone please help! At least this blog is becoming more bright and colorful, I’ve finally figured out how to create a row of social media icons on my blog, yay me 🙂
In other news, I have a lot of DIY projects coming up for you dear readers, so stay tuned!
PS. Did you notice I am not wearing any make-up in this picture?
I love Savers! Wait, I don’t think some of you heard me
I LOVE SAVERS!
Now that’s better. Savers was the only thrift store that offered 50% off on Sunday before President’s Day! Take that all the rest. Well of course you had to have the club card, but it’s free to sign up for one, and you all should go do it!
So here is all I got:
Chico’s Jacket Size 0 – $6
Chico’s top size 2 – $4
NY & Co Top Size S – $3
Nine West Vintage America top Size M- $4
B’leev cardigan – $3
X2 Skinny Jeans Size 1 – $7.50
I have to admit, I did stop by Goodwill last Saturday, and got an amazing semi-precious stone necklace and a curtain! Curtain? Yes, I have a refashion coming up featuring that curtain 😉 So stay tuned!
And don’t forget to enter my Giveaway! I have also joined Smashion, and Etsy profile is coming in the nearest future as well! Don’t miss out on all of the Being Zhenya updates, stay connected via Facebook and Twitter!
I am going to be honest with you, this was supposed to be a dress. But then my proportions were really off, so I had to turn it into a tunic. But I have a couple more shirts that my husband has gladly (yeah, right!) donated, and maybe one of them will eventually turn into a dress!
Here is how:
1. Take a shirt and lay it out flat:
2. Find a dress or shirt that fits you well, and lay it on top of the shirt, trace it:
3. Cut along the lines:
4. Hem the neckline and the sleeves, add personal touches (I went for a vintage lace collar and lace fabric), and you are done!
Have a great weekend everyone, and don’t forget to stop back tomorrow, I am having a SALE on my blog!

I was tagged to do this Christmas tag by Luchessa! Thank you, dear, for tagging me! Here we go:
1. Which Holiday do you celebrate? Christmas, and then Russian Christmas (January 7th!), just because one Christmas is never enough! There was also a time in my life when I celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas!
2. What are you doing for the holidays this year? Going to Wisconsin! Enough said!
3. What’s your favorite holiday drink? Anything caffeinated with peppermint in it, preferably from Starbucks 😉
4. Candy Cane or Gingerbread men? I was going to say neither, but definitely Gingerbread men as I think more about the question. They are easier to chew 🙂
5. What’s your favorite Holiday/Christmas song? At work – All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth!
But the one that really get’s me in the spirit of Christmas is – Oh Come all Ye Faithful
6. What’s the weirdest gift you’ve ever received? Someone once gave Sam and me a Christmas ornament that said “Our First Christmas 2010”, we got married in 2011, and the people who gave it to us came to our wedding! So I think it was a re-gift.
7. Have you ever made a snowman? Yes, many times! I think growing up in Russia it’s a winter MUST! I also made a miniature one last year for a girl I used to babysit!
8. What is your favorite winter fragrance? Definitely Miss Dior
9. What is at the top of your list this Christmas? Sewing books I posted about a couple days ago!
10. What is most important to you about holidays? Spending DRAMA-FREE time with my family!
I am going to tag all of you my lovely readers to answer all of the questions, and I’d really like to tag the following bloggers:
And once again, please feel free to do the tag and link your post in the comments below!
Happy “End of the World” Friday!
How do you combine a $4 Adrienne Vittadini thrifted dress, $10 sale shoes, $6 clearance sweater, a unique handmade jewelry piece, and a $400 Ralph Lauren purse in one outfit?
Here is how:
Hubs and I took the most peaceful walk through the North Loop neighborhood, and then along the River Front here in Minneapolis. The last photo was taken under the Hennepin Ave bridge! I hope you had an awesome Sunday and enjoyed the warm weather in the Cities 🙂
