My Easy Summer Go-To Makeup Routine

Yes, I do realize summer is almost over, but I felt compelled sharing this with you, because I realize that there are maybe some, who don’t even use makeup, and maybe it will inspire you!

As you know, I’ve been using a BB Cream instead of a foundation, and am planning on doing so through the fall (depending on how my skin acts, because that can be unpredictable). More about my new favorite BB here!

Then I apply brow pencil. I used to be a huge advocate for using eye shadow as a brow filler, but have lately shifted away from it! Why bother finding the right color (it’s hard to do even in the professional lines) in the eye shadow, if they make so many pencils and the choice is definitely easier there!

2013-08-18 12.06.53

I also comb through my brows with a brush afterwards. Now some people choose to do it beforehand, but I really don’t have that much brows going on, so that’s how I do it.

2013-08-18 12.07.28

Remember that eyebrows are a frame for the face, and well… because of this too…

MjAxMy0yZDQ4YzNiZDE4OGY0N2E0

Next I move on to mascara. I am currently using Rimmel’s Lash Accelerator, and do highly recommend it, if you are going after length as opposed to volume!

2013-08-18 12.07.45

Then I top it all with a powder. I just bought a new Covergirl Professional loose powder. We’ll see what it’s about. In the picture I am using pressed powder by Faberlic (which by now has broken into many many pieces and is a pain in my know what to apply! Hence the Covergirl)

2013-08-18 12.10.16

One of my new favorite products is the Dandelion blush by Benefit! I will stand by it no matter what! Try it too, you’ll love this blush. And it is one of the few product exceptions when I am not using my own brush to apply it, but the one that it came with!

2013-08-18 12.10.35

And finally I add a little lipstick. I have a Long Last Lipstick from Clinique in All Heart, and even though it’s a gorgeous color, I think it’s too dark for the summer, so I simply dab it and spread it out with my finger.

And that’s it! This is how I do my makeup these days! And trust me it takes way less time, than it took me to write this post 😉

What’s going on?

I quit my Beauty Advisor job at Macy’s to go be a toddler teacher. I couldn’t be more excited! Imagine working Monday through Friday, having weekends and holidays off. Oh, wait that’s how you all live and function out there. Anyways, I am one of you now! My husband couldn’t be more excited too!

We are also trying to decide whether to stay in our current apartment or move. After we saw the other available apartments in our building, my hopes went kind of down. We currently live in an apartment facing the highway, and I can’t sleep on top of the highway anymore, but we have a lot of sunlight throughout the day, the ceilings are high, and I have a ton of storage space. One of the apartments we saw yesterday was all carpeted, that immediately made me feel claustrophobic. The other one was nice, but the bedroom was facing the dumpster, there was no ceiling light in the living room, and no storage space. And they want $800 a month for those? UGH I am frustrated at the moment. So if you live in downtown Minneapolis and know of a great 1 Bedroom, let me know! Thanks!

I also decided to splurge and take advantage of my Macy’s discount for one last time, and get some stuff for myself (and tomorrow we are shopping for Sam). So I got some Origins!

I got Modern Friction and Clear Improvements, have already tried the first one, love it! The samples are of  VitaZing, which I own the full size of and LOVE! and Plantscription Anti-Aging serum! I also got this awesome Origins Mug, and you can decorate it the way you want to! That inside piece comes out and you can stick whatever you like in there 🙂 I tried Modern Friction last night and it’s amazing! The idea is kind of similar to Clinique’s 7 day scrub, but the ingredients are completely different, and so is the effect! Skin is more radiant and soft. Plus it’s not as harsh as Clinique’s scrub, and has a nice scent (as you know all Clinique products are unscented). Okay, you probably all think that I hate Clinique now, I don’t, it’s just there are things that work for some and don’t for others!

I think I will write more about why I decided to quit retail later this weekend, there are some things that I just want to share and get off my chest! One thing for sure – I’ll miss my awesome co-workers!

Have a fabulous day everyone and an awesome Labor Day Weekend!

Cheers,

Z

Makeup No More

Happy hump day! How is your week going? Mine is pretty, well if we put it in my husband’s best friend’s words – shnazzy (is that how you spell shnazzy? I hope so!)

First of all, let me share something with you:

– Working in retail turns you into a mean, spiteful person, who constantly wants to make fun of other people, especially customers. So let’s all try and be a perfect customer to each other shall we?

– Working in retail turns you into a helpful and compassionate person, who is supportive and loving of his coworkers, so lets be that coworker to each other!

– Sometimes helping each other pays off, today it paid off in:

Another thing that’s been on my mind today and honestly for a while is

“I SHOULD STOP BUYING MAKEUP”

Here is why:

And this is how it’s all organized in and on my dresser:

Now being the geek that I have been this past week, I came up with some numbers. So my collection includes:

5 Blushes

3 Powders

2 Bronzers

2 Highlighters

1 BB Cream

1 Tinted Moisturizer

1 VitaZing

1 Foundation

11 Liners:

– 7 gel

– 1 liquid

– 4 pencils

10 Mascaras:

– 1 Primer

– 1 Clear

– 1 Blue

– 7 Black

Lipsticks:

– 1 Lipliner

– 6 glosses, plus whatever is at work (about 3, I think)

– 2 chubby sticks

– 4 lipsticks

2 Serums and 1 Primer (I know these are mainly skincare, but they have snuck in the pictures somehow)

5 Concealers:

– 1 Brightening

– 1 Dark Circle corrector

– 1 Acne corrector

– 2 regular ones

1 Eyeshadow base ( 🙂 )

34 Nailpolishes

4 Shimmer Powders

6 Eyeshadow singles

23 Eyeshadow Palettes, 10 of which include blushes, bronzer and/or highlighters, then 5 of these include lipsticks and glosses

Now you know why I am going to stop buying make up. I don’t know how long it’s going to take me to use those things up, some items will run out/expire faster than others, but the goal is to use up as much items as possible 🙂 And I will definitely keep you updated!

Also, please no judgement on my collection, it is what it is 🙂

xo,

Zhenya

PS. If you want to learn more about any specific item, or for me to post swatches and reviews on any of these products, please leave a comment below 🙂 Also most of the brands are listed in the tags cloud!

Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara

Clinique’s latest addition, the new High Impact Extreme Volume mascara. That tube is huge, but the brush is even bigger! When they first showed it to us in Strategy School I thought it was going to be like CoverGirl’s Lash Blast, WRONG! This thing is HUGE.

The brush takes some getting used to, I poked myself in the eye the first time I used it 🙂 But I was also kind of disappointed, because there is no actual extreme volume, you can probably tell by the picture. Though it does wonders for one of my coworkers.

I would definitely recommend trying it on in the store first before buying it, since it’s a $19.50 mascara after all.

Another tip – the mascara comes in Extreme Black and Black and when compared the Black looks almost Brown :/

Overall I’d give this mascara a 3 out of 5, the original High Impact is better, in my opinion.

Hope your Monday is going well!

A Case of Makeup Plagiarism: Hey Revlon, create new product much?

I wasn’t originally going to even write anything, because these images are pretty self explanatory, but this case of plagiarism just wants to make me laugh, or cry, I don’t know! The funny thing is – I found the Revlon picture on some blog last night, and left a comment that Revlon has completely ripped off the chubby stick, I literally had to look twice! And I work at Clinique! So I left a comment on that blog and the author didn’t even post it, you know those blogs when your comment is awaiting moderation and then it never appears? (oh wait I do that on my blog too! But that’s so none of you would be offered sex toys from Germany or Russian brides). I just wish people would’ve been more honest and open to criticism, besides, I wasn’t saying anything against her, just the company! I also hope that you understand that even though I work at Clinique, I still use other brands, including drug store ones, but hey Revlon is going off my list, with it’s crappy nail polishes and awful PhotoReady!

Have a fabulous day everyone, I know I will!

Z

PS. The pictures were taken off of Revlon’s FB page and Musings of a Muse, who also provides a great review and compares Revlon to Clinique and Tarte!

Latest Additions to my Beauty Collection

I’ve been shopping a little lately, well not really a little, the new bag, then the Old Navy Haul, now Beauty purchases, I am on a kind of roll and I keep telling myself that I gotta stop. But before I do, let me share some of my latest purchases with you!

If you follow me on Twitter on Instagram, you might have already seen these pictures, but I realize that not everyone is as obsessed/dependent on their phone as me, so here they are again:

As you can see, I got some Revlon and Maybelline (sorry, Clinique, but it’s taking too long to get my gratis :/)

Anyways I needed some powder, and even tough I said that I am never ever again buying pressed powder, I went against all odds and got a pressed Revlon Photo Ready powder in Light/Medium.

I also got a Revlon Photo Ready Pore Perfecting Primer, I had some of my Russian subscribers ask me if it was foundation. I know that the filter on the picture makes the primer look darker, it’s actually pretty pink 🙂 Now I am not going to lie, I am a huge fan of Clinique’s Instant Pore Perfector in Light – that stuff is magic and makes your skin super smooth. And even though Revlon’s isn’t as good as that, it’s really not supposed to be – first of all it’s a primer for a foundation, when Clinique’s product is just a treatment that’s supposed to minimize the look of your pores. It’s really hard to compare to be honest with you, but I can tell you one thing – Revlon’s product is a lot larger, so it’s a better value for the money. Again, sorry, Clinique!

Plus I got those two products at CVS and it was buy one, get one half off, and I had the coupons, and I got another $5 Extra Bucks out of it, so I firmly believe that I should become the official Beauty blogger for CVS pharmacy, so someone nominate me 🙂

Then I got the Maybelline Color Tattoo’s in 50 “Edgy Emerald” and 25 “Bad to the Bronze” – haven’t tried them yet, but the reviews are too good to pass out on this product, I had coupons for those little jars of popping color as well!

Today I went to Aveda. See, I am trying to switch all of my haircare and body care products over to Aveda. The process is going to take a long long time, because I have a whole bunch of products at the moment, but I’ll get there 🙂 Today I started with hairspray:

I got the witch hazel hair spray to control my fly-aways, plus witch hazel is simply awesome. I also signed up for Aveda membership/points/rewards program, so I am pretty psyched about that 🙂 Plus check out all of my free samples! Gotta love Aveda for that!

If you have tried any of those products, please leave a comment below, I’d love to hear your opinion! And I am going to do a more thorough review on some of the products that I mentioned here!

Hope you all had an awesome day,

Cheers,

Z

Studs where?

Thank you Ke$ha, I will never look at the studs the same way again. I am pretty sure you are brainless, otherwise this would’ve never happened. At least you went for golden ones, not platinum or diamond… hehe

On the other note, it’s this time of year when I go in for a hair cut. And this time it’s going to be banging! Yes, my friends, I am getting bangs, next Friday! So mark your calendars and don’t forget to check up on me 😉

How is working at Clinique? – Wonderful, the most exciting job I’ve ever had (probably until gift with purchase comes around – LOL – but mark your calendars for that, because it’s a pretty neat gift )

And unless the weather app is lying to me, it’ll be in the 50s here in Minneapolis next week! Buh-bye snow and hello spring!

Doodles,

Z

So what’s Clinique’s 3 Step Really Like?

It’s nothing like Pro Active or any of the drug store 3 step kits…

Yeah, you’ve heard it all before, probably from all kinds of people, including us – Beauty Advisors.

But what do we really think of Clinique’s 3 step? That’s the big question!

Let me share what I think, and how my skin feels. Bur, first of all, let me make it clear – I got my 3 step for FREE, I work for Clinique, so there you have it!

During my hiring process (trust me it was very long – took about a month) I was skin-typed by the Clinique counter manager, and ended up being Skin Type 2 – Dry/Combination – which basically means, I have dry cheeks and a T-zone. If you get skin-typed in a store, you will probably see one of those:

Or an iPad (we have one in downtown Minneapolis, it’s just been sent into repair, because it wasn’t charging!)

You can also skin-type yourself on Clinique’s website! That’s especially appealing to those, who don’t feel comfortable talking to a Beauty Advisor (but we are not as scary as you think!)

My 3 step came with a bar-soap, a purple clarifying lotion (2) and the dramatically different moisturizer without pump. I remember back in 2008 my friend Bri swore by Clinique’s bar soap and said that it really helped her skin clear out. Well, if I had a choice, I would’ve rather gone with liquid soap, but it is what it is. Now do Clinique’s products really have no fragrance? No, they do. The soap and the lotion aren’t as bad, because you wash the first one off, and the other one is absorbed by your skin. But the clarifying lotion smells like witch hazel (duh, it’s one of the ingredients, and menthol – also on the list). Oddly enough, clarifying lotion is my favorite product. I’ve been skipping this step for over 2 years now, and oh boy did it feel good coming back to it! It leaves my skin squeaky clean and if i give it a few moments, I can feel the cooling effects of menthol!

Now back to step 1 – the soap. It’s fine, really, it’s just the next time I am definitely getting the liquid soap! If your skin is combination, but tends to get very dry, I’d recommend trying the extra-mild liquid soap. I know people who’ve done it and love it! Another interesting thing I heard from the customers – substituting the soap with this foaming cleanser:

Heard that it works like a charm as well, though I personally wouldn’t recommend it for oily skin. I also know that a lot of people use this to remove their make-up!

Now last, but not least – the moisturizer (skin type 3 and 4 – you get the gel – less oily!). Yes, it does have the mineral oil in the ingredients. If you don’t know what it is, here is some quick info –

Most often, mineral oil is a liquid by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum-based products from crude oil. A mineral oil in this sense is a transparent, colorless oil composed mainly of alkanes and cyclic paraffins, related to petroleum jelly (also known as “white petrolatum”). It has a density of around 0.8 g/cm3. Mineral oil is a substance of relatively low value, and it is produced in very large quantities. Mineral oil is available in light and heavy grades, and can often be found in drug stores.

Cosmetics

Mineral oil is a common ingredient in baby lotions, cold creams, ointments and cosmetics. It is a lightweight inexpensive oil that is odorless and tasteless. It can be used on eyelashes to prevent brittleness and breaking and, in cold cream, is also used to remove creme make-up and temporary tattoos. One of the common concerns regarding the use of mineral oil is its presence on several lists of comedogenicsubstances. These lists of comedogenic substances were developed many years ago and are frequently quoted in the dermatological literature.

A study reported in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2005) found that the type of highly refined and purified mineral oil found in cosmetic and skincare products is noncomedogenic (does not clog pores).

So it’s not as bad as a lot of people make it sound! I use it and love it! I do wish it came with a pump though (it does, mine just didn’t 😉 )

And I do recommend that you try it! If you live in the Twin Citites area, come see me at the Clinique counter in downtown Macy’s, I’ll be more than willing to help you, sign you up for events and make-overs!

 Doodles,

Z
