DIY Classroom ideas: “In the Grass”

As some of you may know, I quit my job at New Horizon Academy, there were a number of reasons why, but I am not going to go into detail now. But in spite of the fact that I wasn’t going to stay in the classroom, I helped decorate it for the next month’s theme, which is “In the Grass”

I started off with making these flowers! You will see them a lot throughout the pictures. I used green pipe cleaners for the stems and the flowers themselves came pre-made, I simply mixed and matched 🙂

The clock also required an update, if you remember, this used to be a Big Ben, now it’s a sun, shining over the flowers, a carbon monoxide alarm disguised as a giant pink chrysanthemum, and a blue bird:

I hung green ribbon from the ceiling for a cozy in the grass feel:

Remember the Love Tree I had up in February? I took some of the hearts down, replaced them with flowers, and viola – a spring time tree:

And finally an updated Family Board (I blurred out the faces, I am sure you understand why 🙂 )

Today I am starting a new job at Orchard Park Childcare Centre, and I couldn’t be more excited! I will continue posting classroom ideas about once a month, so don’t forget to subscribe if that’s something relevant to you!

Husband’s Shirt into Tunic Refashion/

2013-02-07 08.08.01 (1)

I am going to be honest with you, this was supposed to be a dress. But then my proportions were really off, so I had to turn it into a tunic. But I have a couple more shirts that my husband has gladly (yeah, right!) donated, and maybe one of them will eventually turn into a dress!

Here is how:

1. Take a shirt and lay it out flat:

2013-01-22 21.56.31 (1)

2. Find a dress or shirt that fits you well, and lay it on top of the shirt, trace it:

2013-01-22 21.56.45 (1)

3. Cut along the lines:

2013-01-22 22.07.39 (1)

4. Hem the neckline and the sleeves, add personal touches (I went for a vintage lace collar and lace fabric), and you are done!

Have a great weekend everyone, and don’t forget to stop back tomorrow, I am having a SALE on my blog!

Xo,

Z

Warm and Cozy Winter Tote DIY /

2013-01-20 14.11.15 (1)

I started crocheting this color block tote several months ago, using left over yarn that I either freecycled or thrifted. It really is a quick project if you dedicate yourself to it, and not let it lay around in your closet for months, like I did :/

To make this tote all you need is:
– thick acrylic yarn,
– number 3.5 crochet hook,
– handles either from an old bag or from a craft store (mine came from Jo-Ann’s)
– some fabric for the lining

We are going to start by crocheting the bottom of the tote, all stitches will be double crochet. You can decide how wide and how deep you want your tote to be. Mine is 10 DC wide and 22 DC long and 33 DC high. If you are using a lot of different colors, it’s helpful to draw a color scheme! But you don’t have to 🙂

Once I was done crocheting the tote, it looked like this:

2013-01-20 21.52.36

Then I traced the tote, making a pattern for the lining, adding an inside pocket as well

2013-01-20 21.58.02

To attach the handles, I simply pulled strips of fabric through the metal rings, and inserted them between the lining and crochet shell:

And here is what it looks like on the inside:

2013-01-20 22.06.56 (1)

I hope you liked this DIY. I just can’t decide what to do with this tote now, should I keep it, or should I give it away? Please comment below!

Happy Monday,

Jo-Ann Fabrics)

Christmas Tag!

I was tagged to do this Christmas tag by Luchessa! Thank you, dear, for tagging me! Here we go:
images-2

1. Which  Holiday do you celebrate? Christmas, and then Russian Christmas (January 7th!), just because one Christmas is never enough! There was also a time in my life when I celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas!

2. What are you doing for the holidays this year? Going to Wisconsin! Enough said!

3. What’s your favorite holiday drink? Anything caffeinated with peppermint in it, preferably from Starbucks 😉

paperless-cards-feel-better-tree-christmas-ecards-someecards

4. Candy Cane or Gingerbread men? I was going to say neither, but definitely Gingerbread men as I think more about the question. They are easier to chew 🙂

5. What’s your favorite Holiday/Christmas song? At work – All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth!

But the one that really get’s me in the spirit of Christmas is – Oh Come all Ye Faithful

6. What’s the weirdest gift you’ve ever received? Someone once gave Sam and me a Christmas ornament that said “Our First Christmas 2010”, we got married in 2011, and the people who gave it to us came to our wedding! So I think it was a re-gift.

7. Have you ever made a snowman? Yes, many times! I think growing up in Russia it’s a winter MUST! I also made a miniature one last year for a girl I used to babysit!

8. What is your favorite winter fragrance? Definitely Miss Dior

Miss-Dior-300x300

9. What is at the top of your list this Christmas? Sewing books I posted about a couple days ago!

10. What is most important to you about holidays? Spending DRAMA-FREE time with my family!

I am going to tag all of you my lovely readers to answer all of the questions, and I’d really like to tag the following bloggers:

Kiss Ever PRO Lash Starter Kit Product Review

I am going to be honest with you – I am not a huge fan of false lashes. So when I received my complimentary Influenster VoxBox 2012 Kiss Ever Pro Lashes were the last thing I’ve tried. Don’t get me wrong, I have used falsies in the past, but they were individual ones, that you simply add to the corners of your eye bunch by bunch. These lashes were a full strip!

I made sure to read the instructions and watch a video (the package says that there is a video on the Kiss website , but I couldn’t find it, so I ended up finding this one on YouTube) because I really wanted these to work!

I did have high hopes for this product, the reviews on Influenster were 97% positive! Everyone wanted to give it an A. Plus the product description intrigued me: Made from highest quality human hair. Use with Kiss adhesive for optimal results. Latex free, odor free, waterproof, flexible formula for 24hr hold, easy applicator. The only thing that concerned me was the price – $4.99 seemed too cheap to my “I used to work in cosmetics at Macy’s”. But let’s see how it worked out for me:

Before:

Getting Ready:

 And after:

I think it looks super tacky, the color is too dark, even after I put a coat of mascara over my natural lashes.  The base to which the falsies are attached seems too thick, it makes you look like you are wearing a thick eye liner. The glue smells like Elmer’s (I am a teacher, I know 🙂 ) And I honestly thought twice before applying it, because the smell really stopped me at first! The applicator (which was supposed to make it easier) made it really hard for me to apply the lashes. I looked at myself for about 2 minutes in the mirror, then took it all off! Applied another coat of Lancome mascara, and that was it 🙂 I will probably never use these lashes again!

Let me know what you think of that product! Cheers!

Last Friday Night: Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

Yes, I finally did it, I dragged my husband out to the Sculpture Garden, which is “ahem” a 10 minute walk from our house, and also a place where we got married almost a year ago!

I mean it never gets old, so here are a few shots:

My legs are almost see-through – I guess I’ve over worked out 🙂 hmmm But hey I am wearing a thrifted Saks Fifth Avenue Shirt, so that’s legit!

Can you find the fish?

This never gets old (maybe because that’s the only thing in Minneapolis to look at?) Also, sorry random girls, you are now famous on my blog 🙂

I told you taking pictures of the skyline never gets old 🙂

Plants are afraid of the dark too, they need a night light!

Lights will guide you… if not home, then well somewhere 🙂

One more fore the cheap seats in the back!

My favorite quote of them all!

Hope you had fun bumming around The Sculpture Garden with me! How was your weekend? What did you do? Where did you go? Who did you see?

Xo,

Z

Decorating White Keds

A few weeks ago I got a pair of Mossimo (Target brand) white keds at Goodwill outlet. Surprisingly, they fit. And they are extremely comfortable too. But I want to add a little more of a personality to them. So tonight, after Sam and I took a long walk around Lake of the Isles, I came home determined to look up some ideas on the Internet and Pin them! But I also want to ask your opinion, and based on the vote (assuming there is one), I’ll transform the ordinary into extraordinary and share my experience with you!

So here are a few ideas from my Pinterest board:

You can also view them if you visit this link.

I am also kind of tempted to put lace on them, you know me, I’ll stick lace on anything 🙂

So please let me know which idea you like the best, by either commenting or voting! And I’ll post a DIY next week!

Easy Sewing: Pastel Lace Dress

Happy Monday everyone! Today’s post is all about sewing! And lace! What can be better than that? It was all a result of me having too much coffee and not blogging for a while.

All of the fabrics that were used in this project came from Steeple People Thrift Store on Lyndale and Franklin! Yay for reusing 🙂

1. I started off by laying the lace out on the floor.

2. To determine how much fabric to cut off I took one of my maxi skirts out of the closet, and laid it out on top of the fabric. Then I cut off about 2 1/2 widths of the skirt off, and kept the length of the fabric.

3. I also went for a light off white fabric as lining.

4. Then I pinned and sewed the lining to the lace, folding it over, so that I had where to run the elastic through.

5. And that’s that. I apologize again, I really need to bring up my game and post some outfits and how I style my clothes. I am going to work on it in the next couple of weeks!

I hope you all had a great weekend 🙂 I can’t wait to share more of the easy DIYs and other fun Zhenya projects with you this week!
