September Grunge

Reflections, and maybe thought about the past have been on my mind a lot. September is always a hard month for me, with my Grandpa passing away last year, and me not being there, like I was for my Grandma, I get emotional and feel incomplete.

Maybe that’s why I more than feel the grunge trend of the 90’s? It makes me feel closer to home, closer to my childhood.

It was 11 years ago in September that I started college, and now I am at it again! Dejavu is stronger than ever!

September, I am glad you are almost over.

More of the grunge trend below! Check out my favorite plaid sweaters and moto/combat footwear.

Oversized Coat Trend 2014

OversizedCoatStyling OversizedCoatTrend2014 OversizedCoatTrend2014

The oversized coat trend is one of my favorites this fall! Nothing like a soft feel of a coat to make you cozy and warm on a chilly autumn day. It’s the Snuggie of the fashion world.

#EnvisionMPLS Fall 2014

With MN fashion week in full swing, I absolutely had to post about Envision. It took place last Friday and once again was held at the Orchestra Hall, which, if you ask me, is a perfect venue for this event! It started with an inspiration message from Tricia Khutoretsky who reminded everyone present that “We are not New York, we are not Miami, we are Minneapolis…”

Once again the show was a mix of local designer looks and local boutiques.  The opportunity and ability to see what’ was on the runway is definitely a plus. Aldo provided all the footwear, and Tess + Tricia accessories were a pleasant surprise.

It was interesting to see what the designers came up with, the show was new and different and much better than the spring Envision. No blasts from the past on the runway this time!

Knits by Mary Pranica kicked off the show, and, being especially passionate about that craft I was really excited to see the collection!

Cocoon by Elizabeth Geisler had a couple great coats, mostly along the oversized, blanket coat trend line.

Velvet moon was very boho, but very dark at the same time. The Black and white dress that you first see in the video was definitely a favorite of mine.

Kjurek and plaid went hand in hand. Why do I always think of coffee when I see Kjurek? ;) But that last oversized flannel coat is everything!

Cliche put a nice 90’s spin on their collection, one of the models walking down the runway could barely hold in her laughter.

Ellie Hottinger had amazing oversized pieces that if I had a choice, I’d wear every day, because comfort > style in my college book these days.

And then Samantha Rei’s IsabelleEtColette appeared on the runway. I have to admit, I’ve been following the creation of Samantha’s collection on Instagram and Facebook, and the whole idea of the Fox and the Sparrow, the post cards, the story telling. Samantha, you should write a book. For a designer to go practically broke, but finish a collection, you are amazing and inspiring.

Lindsey Hopkins played with neoprene and Japan inspired theme in her collection. Made me regret giving up my neoprene skirt!

Emily Trevor’s collection reminded me of a vintage Haut Coutire Dior dress that I recently saw in one of my classes. Even though it seemed heavy, it was incredibly well thought through.

George Moskal was someone whose collection I was really looking forward to seeing. He hasn’t shown any of his designs for a while, so him coming back was a needed change.

I immensely enjoyed Envision, seeing old friends and meeting new ones, or meeting people I’ve met on social media, and putting avatars to faces or faces to avatars.

As far as my look – it was all thrifted. After the show I knew I couldn’t make it back to the car in my wedges, so I took them off and walked barefoot through Loring Park, planning on using my shoes for self-defense, which, luckily for me was unnecessary.

Grow Longer Hair Faster

rozgegrowfast

I have no problem experimenting with products and trying out new stuff. That’s why when Rozge came to me with an offer to try their GrowFast  shampoo and conditioner, I couldn’t say no. Summer was coming to an end, and I wanted to try out something that would help my hair grow faster in the fall/winter seasons.

Just like any normal girl I have several things that I don’t like about my hair, or that I think are currently wrong with it, but that’s all I got, and I am working with it.

growfastshampoo growfast

I have been using GrowFast shampoo and conditioner for 3 weeks now, and that’s how long it usually takes to see the first results. I didn’t start seeing the results until last week, and of course they aren’t huge! I didn’t grow a full head of hair overnight, I will never be able to compete with Rapunzel, and I am okay with that.

There is a trick to the shampoo and conditioner process, and I am not talking about the ingredients now. And that’s a good tip for anyone who uses shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis. The Rosge shampoo needs to be massaged into your scalp for 3-5 minutes. When I first read the instructions, I thought – alright, I can do this. But my arms started hurting after about 2 minutes. It definitely takes time get used to. A little scalp massage never hurt anyone to be honest.

As far as the ingredients go, the products include:

– Apigenin, which fights the follicle aging process and prevents hair loss. It works by increasing circulation to the scalp and providing a seamless pathway for nutrients to nurture the hair follicles.

– Oleanolic Acid  –  naturally occurring triterpenoid found in plants, this component is nontoxic and protects cells against stress. Oleanolic Acid strengthens hair, making it less susceptible to hair loss.

– Biotin – A form of Vitamin B, Biotin is essential for cellular growth in the body. Studies have reported that biotin helps strengthen hair. Vitamin B is found in a variety of foods including nuts, fish, meat, eggs, and dairy. Known as the Vitamin B Complex, B vitamins promote a healthy body function and cell renewal.

– Shea Butter Fruit is an emollient that locks in moisture without leaving hair feeling oily. This natural extract conditions the scalp and shields against damage from heat tools and harmful environmental factors.

Shampoo Ingredients: Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Alaninate, Polyquaternium-7, Sodium PCA, PEG-8 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, Apigenin, Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1, Butylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Oleanolic Acid, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PG-26- Buteth-26, Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, Fragrance (Parfum).

Conditioner Ingredients: Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Behentrimonium Chloride, Allantoin, Aminomethyl Propanol, Apigenin, Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1, Butylene Glycol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, Calcium Pantothenate, Citric Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Hexylene Glycol, Hydrogenated C6-14 Olefin Polymers, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Hydroxyethyl Behenamidopropyl Dimonium Chloride, Maltodextrin, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Minoxidil, Niacinamide, Oleanolic Acid, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PG-26-Buteth-26, Phenoxyethanol, Polyquaternium-37, Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Pyridoxine HCl, Silica, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Starch Octenyl Succinate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Trideceth-6, Fragrance (Parfum).

Here are my before and after in just 3 weeks. I hope you notice the difference, because I sure do!

Last week I had an amazing opportunity to style several of Josi’s dresses for fall! If you remember this post, you know that Josi is a Minneapolis based designer of fabrics, and she has recently started her dress line! Back in May I got to try on the mini, and now she has come out with a maxi!

Enjoy the looks, let me know what you think, and don’t forget to go visit Josi and Austin at 1008 Marquette Ave.

Getting Away with Sh*t

… aka the lessons I learned from Timothy Goodman. Wait who? And why? And why would you want to get away with anything?

I was probably the only person going into the presentation who had no idea who Timothy Goodman was. I chose to attend his presentation for a professional development portion for one of my classes.

The website said he was from New York City, so I knew it was going to be good. You know I haven’t gotten over NYC and it’s already been 4 years. Probably never will, but anyhow…

I looked him up on Twitter, and thought cool – he has a lot of followers. I had no idea what I signed myself up for. But in the end what it was and what I got out of it was so much more than I expected.

The presentation started with dick jokes, a lot of them, and they were quiet funny to be honest.

But then he mentioned a person who, when asked “What do you do for a living?”, said “Whatever I can get away with!”.

So how do you do that?

1. Know the rules
2. Have audacity
3. Don’t ask for permission
4. Listen to yourself
5. Get in your work
6. Stay young

In the end, finding my voice is what matters, even though reality and expectation don’t always line up.

So never stop making, because anything can be your canvas!

Gina + Will Goodwill

ginapluswill

Last Friday night I finally made it to the new thrift store Gina + Will in Dinkytown. Operated by Goodwill Easter Seals MN it is an experimental store targeted towards young people and students. Located at 1324 5th St SE, Minneapolis it’s right across the street from Target Express and is very easy to find.

I got there around 7 pm and the place was busy! There was music, DJ, food and refreshments, and of course so many styles to choose from.

It was also a great chance for me to snap a few pictures of some outfits that made it on the Ustyle tumblr page!

What to shop Gina + Will for?

Fall apparel – sweaters, jackets, boots – it’s all there and the selection is great.

Bottoms – jeans, skirts, slacks, sweatpants (if you wish) can also be found in a large variety of styles and sizes.

Specialty racks – Gina + Will loves black and white was one of them last week, and I snagged two amazing items off of that rack!

Go there for the school spirit wear (and other local teams too ;) ) – get that Goldie on your shirt for cheaper than anywhere else!

Have you visited Gina + Will Goodwill? What did you think?

One of my finds was this white Talbots pleated skirt. You will be seeing a lot of it this fall, trust me!

NYFW SS15 Day 1 Recap

Here we go! Full on fashion, my favorite looks and recap of day one. Even though I am not attending or volunteering at Fashion week as I planned this September, #NYFW is at the top of my hashtag search on Twitter and Instagram.

The day started off with Nicholas K show, and with an exception of a few looks, the collection is very bad ass. Black, fringe and drapery are the three words that come to mind when I think of this collection. And yes, I would wear all of these!

BCBGMaxAzria is where I want to go next, that’s the show I caught live right before my morning class, and that set the mood for the day. The bohemian-chic-luxe looks with fluttering silk dresses in delicate pastel shades that appeared on the runway to the best version of 500 miles I have ever heard, took my breath away. I want to wear nothing, but maxis in the spring of 2015. Practical? Not so much, but…

Richard Chai created a collection full of neons and blues, with a good mix of darker, deeper colors in between. Shorter shorts and stripes for guys. Some color blocking for ladies.

Tadashi Shoji was once again very regal, very chic, flowy, but more structured than BCBGMaxAzria. Overall amazing, and if Disney would ever agree to that, I think Tadashi should design all of the princess outfits!

Thanks to Desigual I now know that floral crowns can be taken to new heights. And that pastel hair will transition into spring of 2015.

Thank you Marissa Webb for all the black and white looks, for structured jackets and that pop of red in the end.

And this is all the recap I have energy for today! And to end the post here is a quote from Joan Rivers whom I share “immigrant mentality” with. I’ll miss you Joan!
