Perfect Summer Tote DIY

20130426-124306.jpg
Today I have prepared an easy and quick refashion that any Costco shopper can afford to make 🙂 Why Costco? Because that’s where my in-laws take us shopping sometimes and that’s where I found a giant bag of rice that came in a sack, that we are going to use in our refashion today!
Another thin we’ll need is either plain fabric for lining, or, like in my case, a cloth bag one of my designer purses came in!
Here is our bag of rice (I’ve only seen them at Costco, please let me know if you’ve seen them at other stores! I want to make this easier for those who choose to shop elsewhere!)

And here is the bag we are going to use for lining:

20130426-124840.jpg

The first thing you are going to want to do is hide all the loose ends, strings, etc! I also got rid of the zipper, because it was junky!

Then I trimmed the cloth bag to fit, kept the handles, because the original sack handles were too short!

20130426-125652.jpg

Make sure to do some fitting before you start sewing by simply inserting the new lining into the sack:

I also went over the top edges with a thick red thread, to make sure it didn’t fray:

How big is your needle? 😉
And finally sewed it all together on my machine! When sewing be careful, because the sack is made of a thick and heavy fabric, I don’t want you ruining your machines because of me! And keep in mind – you’ll end up doing some hand sewing one way or another, because the edges are thick!

And you are done! Enjoy your bag and have a wonderful weekend!
For those of you who are wondering where I am going next week – my blog is taking me to Chicago! And even though I am going to the Windy City only for a couple of days, I feel like it’s an amazing start of something wonderful and exciting for me!
Lots of love,
Z

DIY Friday: Decorating a Tote Bag

Back in October, I went to a staff development day for work. It was one giant teacher conference, with a lot of classes to take, and of course a free goody bag! Unfortunately the bag had this on it:

Just in case you have trouble figuring out the writing, it says – Igniting your awesome! I think it’s an absolutely amazing inspirational quote, but not when it looks so sad and washed out :/

I took some nail polish remover (ACETONE is your best friend here!) to get rid of most of the writing.

Then I got some fabric for the new applique to go over the writing! This came off of an old T-shirt I freecycled a while back, and it’s just been sitting in my closet, waiting for it’s moment! And well, it finally came!

I was debating which piece to use for my refashion and whether to do both front and back, or just front, and finally decided on this:

The brown lace trim came off of the same shirt that I cut up last week for my wall art DIY 🙂

The next step was the longest and probably the most painful one, because I pricked my finger with a needle a few times! But I hand sewn it all together! And the result was just amazing!

Yes, it is Monopoly Star Wars edition sticking out of my newly refashioned bag!

I hope every single one of you had a blessed Thanksgiving! And a successful Black Friday!

Cheers,

Zhenya

OOTD: A ZIG and a ZAG

How do you combine a $4 Adrienne Vittadini  thrifted dress, $10 sale shoes, $6 clearance sweater, a unique handmade jewelry piece, and a $400 Ralph Lauren purse in one outfit?

Here is how:

Hubs and I took the most peaceful walk through the North Loop neighborhood, and then along the River Front here in Minneapolis. The last photo was taken under the Hennepin Ave bridge! I hope you had an awesome Sunday and enjoyed the warm weather in the Cities 🙂

DIY Crochet Color Block Tote: Part 1

Why a 2 parter? Well, I just can’t crochet fast enough.

Why a color block tote? Because it’s perfect for people like me who get their yarn off of freecycle.org or at thrift store (YES ALL YARN/FABRIC I USE IN MY PROJECTS IS RECYCLED – THATS HOW I KEEP MY HOBBIES AT A LOW PRICE)  and there is never enough of it to make something a solid one color. So since color blocking is a huge hit this year, I thought why not make a tote. Plus I had the handles for it too (bought them back in February 😉 – I know it takes me a while)

So when color blocking when crocheting it’s important to decide on your colors first. I went with some that coordinated with my sweaters from Old Navy. Remember this post? Yup, those sweaters 🙂 Also ignore the fact that it looks like I’ve already made something out of red yarn, I didn’t, that all was going to become undone. Back in December I crocheted some Christmas stockings and this was a trial one, turned out to be too big, and is now being turned into a bag 🙂

Once you’ve decided on your colors, you are going to decide on the pattern. I simply drew mine, and since both sides were going to have a different pattern, it ended up looking like this:

You can also tell I totally misspelt SIDE 🙂 hehe – English is not my first language after all 🙂 But no worries, I corrected it later. So I hope my drawing is pretty self explanatory, the numbers on the sides are the numbers of rows, and the colors are written in each section.

Now this is how far I’ve got. I really hope to be done this week, so I don’t have to make you wait to see the finished product until next week.

I promis that very very soon this baby will be completed with it’s own lining, an inside pocket or two and handles. Stay tuned for Part 2, especially if you want to see what the other side looks like 😉

Outfit of the Day – Dressing up for the Dentist

Today was my last visit to the dentist. Now I am not talking about cleaning or anything, I was getting my teeth fixed big time, no I mean it, BIG TIME!

I guess dental care in Russia sucks, because when I was leaving last July, I went to see a dentist, who told me I was going to be fine and that my teeth looked okay. Then I came here, and they took the X-rays, and it all went downhill from there. Well now it’s all fixed, and I am a happy camper. I am also happy the anesthesia wore off and I can enjoy dinner, without having to worry about biting my lip off! But in all it’s honesty, I had 8 or 9 teeth done, that’s how bad it was!

It always helps when the dentist calls you hun though 🙂

But enough me blabbering – here is what I wore today:

Loafers – Lucky Brand

Jeans – Dollhouse

Shirt and undershirt – Old Navy

Purse – Ralph Lauren, duh!

Watch – Marc Jacobs – It’s actually not in the picture, but I don’t leave the apartment without putting it on!

Check out my bicycle necklace – how awesome is that? Yup, I won it in a giveaway!

I was also wearing my Steve Madden shades, but those aren’t in the picture either!

And finally, I haven’t been blow drying or straightening my hair for almost a month now, feels awesome! Anyone out there need an extra curling iron?

Doodles,

Z

Lucky Brand

Джинсы – Dollhouse

Майка/кофта – Old Navy

Z

On Mortals and Purses

One good thing about working at Macy’s is shopping at Macy’s, oh wait I think I got that wrong 😉

Either way – my search for a perfect bag is over, I finally decided on a hobo by Ralph Lauren, and the discount was too good to pass on the deal. Plus this bag is black with silver accents, and that’s exactly what I was looking for!

Oh Macy’s, you just make me shop all the more!

The original price on this baby is $386, and let me tell you, I got it for less than 40% of the original price (that includes me using the Macy’s Card and my employee discount)

What do you think? I am pretty sure I am done with purses now, so if anyone is interested in buying any of my vintage/thrifted bags, let me know, I have a whole lot!

Cheers!

Purse Dilemma

Do you watch YouTube? Anyways I have become the biggest YouTube junkie for over a year now, and I love Tiffany from MakeupByTiffany – she recently posted a video and shared her latest purchases – one of which was a Louis Vuitton bag. And what a bag – I mean it was gorgeous. So gorgeous, that here are some pictures for you:

And I do agree with Tiffany that purchasing a bag like this is an investment and an investment of a life time. So I’ve discovered myself drooling over LV bags for the past 2 nights.

So I wanted to ask your opinion – do you think it’s worth investing into an expensive purse like an LV or a Chanel, or just spend money on a cheaper one. Anyways, please take time to leave a vote 🙂

Doodles my lovelies,

Z

DIY Friday: Afghan square clutch

From all of the crochet patterns popular in the US, I think afghan square is the most popular one. And if you don’t know how to crochet, learning how to make an afghan square should be a must.

What I did was turn a square into a clutch, I also added a “golden” button to create a vintage feel 😉

     Have a great weekend everyone,

xoxo,

Z
