Neroli Salon in Milwaukee: My Lash and Nail Experience

neroli-salon-milwaukee

Disclosure: I received complimentary service in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.

Let’s admit, we all need some pampering and time to ourselves, away from work, family, even our significant others. And what better place to go to in times like these than a beauty salon, especially an Aveda one?

It’s been two weeks since I received the services at the salon. Yes, a part of me procrastinated, but another part of me wanted to actually see how long the nails and lashes are going to last. And I have to tell you, I am more than impressed! I only lost a few lashes, and my nails are not chipped at all. Grown out, but no one is really looking that closely.

I will start with lashes! I had lash extensions once before (you can read about it here), so I knew what to expect. My esthetician Elise was the sweetest! She is the one who actually made this whole experience happen! Turns out she knows one of my blogger friends Kaitlyn and she sent her my way! Lesson 1: Make friends and stay in touch with people!

I spent 2 hours relaxing and chatting with Elise while she was doing my lashes, and the 2 hours flew by in no time. I shared with her how stressed out I’ve been lately, and how much I was looking forward to the service. We both agreed that her job is not just about making someone’s lashes longer, but rather making that person happy.

Hands down my lashes make me feel prettier, happier, and more confident than ever. Additional bonus – when you cry – your mascara won’t run, because you don’t have to wear any. Lesson 2: It’s okay to be emotional (especially when Mercury is in retrograde! Anyone else feel my pain?)

Since having my lashes done 2 weeks ago, I’ve only started touching up with mascara in the outer corners of my eyes this week. I think one of the most popular questions I get asked about lash extensions is how long they last me. And it honestly depends on the person. I know this is a cop-out answer, but everyone’s lash cycle is different. It’s like hair. Lashes fall out. And if you don’t make a wish and blow them away, then you are not keeping track of them. Lesson 3: Dream often. But if you are seriously thinking about getting lash extensions, try to pay attention to how often you lose your natural lashes, that should be an indicator of how long the extensions will last you.

I love my extensions for a few reasons: I wake up looking ready. There is absolutely no mascara that can help me achieve the same (or even a similar) result. I can still sleep on my stomach and somehow get away with it!

If you are thinking about getting extensions, I highly recommend doing it at Neroli in Third Ward with Elise! From effortless casual conversation to fanning the fumes out of your eyes, she is your girl and she will make sure you leave looking and feeling like a million bucks!

My manicure experience was as amazing as my lashes. And I think a big part of it was really hitting it off with my estheticians. Lisa did my nails, and that girl is a riot. We talked for 2 hours as she was doing my nails and even after, as she was walking me through some of her favorite Aveda skincare while making me samples. How thoughtful is that? There are a few products I definitely have to go back for, like the Tulasāra Wedding Overnight Masque.

Lisa was very helpful when it came to picking out the design. I wanted something simple that would go well with everything. So when she suggested a reverse french manicure that included a nude, I was all in!

I have never gotten this many compliments on my nails before.

And to make it all better for you my Milwaukee friends, Lisa has been working on some unique Milwaukee nail art that I can’t wait to get done! The amount of effort and drive this girl puts into her work combined with the creativity is so inspiring, it’s literally helping me write this post!

Thanks to Lisa, I am not only loving my nails, but have a few beauty products to write reviews on for you!

Thank you so much to Neroli Salon and Spa for providing me with these complimentary services! I will definitely be coming back. Please follow Elise and Lisa on Instagram, the preferred choice of social media these days.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you may have! I will gladly answer those 🙂

Women’s March on Madison + Link Up

women's march womens-march-madison

Hi all! I would like to let you know right away, this is a post featuring photos from Women’s March on Madison that took place on Saturday.

As someone who came from a country where women have very few rights, where patriarchy reigns, where gay people can’t express their feelings towards each other, where foreign exchange students get harassed, raped and killed, I marched! I marched because I can make a difference. I marched because I am a citizen. I marched to support. I marched to spread love. I marched for a better future.

I didn’t march to show hate, to support one side over the other. I marched for equality, rights and freedom for all.

I want to end with this quote – The Devil whispered in my ear, “You’re not strong enough to withstand the storm.” Today I whispered in the Devil’s car, “I am the storm.”

Where God Guides…

Here is someone I want you to meet. And no it’s not another Etsy maven, or a fashionista from down the street, they are my friends Christiana and Phil Brande, and their Baby B (who is yet to B born 🙂 get it? )

935795_10151516772052893_1080586323_n

They are 9 short days away from departing the US and heading over to Prague, to teach at the Christian School there. See, they are raising money for their trip, and believe that God will provide, because they are following his calling!

994533_10151468615766916_1143401223_n

They are beautiful people who spent over 10 years living and spreading God’s word and love in Russia (my home country), that’s where Christiana and I met, when I was 14 or 15. I was a part of the group from the Wesleyan church that went to a camp for orphans organized by a team from the States. And she has an absolutely calming peaceful presence, but radiates happiness at the same time! And after talking to them today, I felt so inspired and encouraged, and once again amazed by how Great our God is! And how big our small world is!

I don’t know when I am going to see them again, but I will definitely be following their blog and you should to! And if God puts it on your heart to donate to their ministry then bless your heart!

Xx,

A couple weeks ago I attended one of the Minnesota bloggers meet-up events, which was a yoga class lead by Katie of  Strawberry Halls Forever. It was an amazing experience, not only because I got to meet other bloggers in the area, but also because it was my very first yoga class!

248388_10101022935915191_1686039677_n

I have been doing yoga for over 4 years now, but never in a group! I am a loner (read cheapskate 😉 ) when it comes to working out. I love my work out DVDs and videos I find on YouTube (check out Fitness Blender – it’s one of the best resources out there!)

Now I got into yoga by accident, and let me explain how it happened! Back in my good old nannying days when I lived on the Upper West Side everyone and everything breathed and talked yoga! You see I was always more of a runner, and I loved my strength training as well! Remember Cindy Crawford’s videos from the 1990’s? Those were my go-to workouts for many years! My mom got me into them back when I was in 8th grade! And I still do them 2-3 times a week, though I’ve switched over to Jillian Michaels since then! But let’s return to the UWS though… I was really into FIT.TV and since the family I worked for had Warner Cable, I took advantage of it every day! I got into Gilad’s workouts, and Namaste Yoga by Kate Potter was on right after! So I gave it a shot and FELL IN LOVE! And have been doing it ever since! I tried other workouts by other instructors, but Kate Potter won me over!

And even though I’ve been doing yoga all by myself for a long time, I feel like it’s one of those experiences you need to live through as a group, so one of my goals this summer is to find a yoga class to join, so if you know of a good one in Minneapolis and western suburbs area, please let me know!

7167

Another thing that I’ve come to realize is that I don’t really have any good yoga clothes, and to me being fashionable at yoga is much more important than when I go for a run. So as I was looking for cute yoga clothes, I came across C9 brand at Target!

3316

They have very affordable and stylish work out clothes, designed specifically for yogis 🙂 And if you watch their website close enough, you can get coupons and discounts on C9 brand pretty often!

3315

Show style and strength in this yoga top by C9 by Champion, exclusive to Target!

3312Bust a (yoga) move in these stylish, snazzy pants from C9 by Champion, a Target-exclusive line of fitness.

3313

Love yoga? Or just love comfy, stylish yoga pants that keep you covered no matter what? Whatever your yoga pants-wearing style, C9 by Champion at Target has you covered!

3317

What gives you peace and strength? Whatever motivates you, C9 by Champion apparel has you covered!
I am definitely going to Target to get myself some cute and colorful yoga tops and comfy stretchy pants (don’t worry, those will be worn to yoga classes alone 😉 ) Where do you shop for yoga clothes and what type/style of yoga would you recommend?

$$$ It’s all about the money, or is it? $$$

money-saving-idea1-600x300

Today’s post is probably not going to be something you usually see on my blog! I am sure by now some of you have the impression that I am a girl who spends all of her paychecks thrifting! And I can see where this can come from! I’ve been posting a lot of hauls and outfits lately! Let’s be honest, I do sometimes get carried away at a thrift store, and I need to watch my budget, but most of the time it really is not that much compared to a grand scheme of things, or let’s say a recent study by InStyle magazine that says – An average woman spends about $15,000 on makeup during her lifetime, and that’s not including skincare!

Before Sam and I got married, I lived on the East Coast nannying for some families. I wasn’t making a lot of money, in fact I was barely making anything (I never thought of myself or my family as rich or poor, I knew I had enough, and I think that attitude helped me a lot in life) through the Cultural Care Au Pair program, but I had my ways! When I moved to New York, I learned about Freecycle.org, and almost all of my clothes, books and health care products came from there! I also went to monthly swap meet ups organized by GrowNYC, where I would bring all the stuff I didn’t want, and go home with something I liked. Sam had a hard time believing I had all that clothes, without spending as much as a couple bucks on the subway ride, but I had my savings account to speak for me!

I was an Au Pair for 2 years, making under $200 a week, this is the time when Sam and I were in a long distant relationship. So even though I didn’t get to see him that often, I spent a lot of money flying to Minnesota almost every other month! But by the time we got engaged I had saved up over $12,000. Then I went to Russia for 10 months, where I was able to work from home and add on to the savings.

Now that we are looking into buying our first house, having saved enough for a downpayment, I reflect on where I came from and can’t express how thankful I am for everything I’ve been given!

I was born in a small town 3 hours east of Moscow. My mother was a civil engineer, my dad was a college drop out. My grandfather was a retired military man, a former KGB agent as I discovered later in life, my grandmother was a pediatrician, and if you ask me, the biggest workaholic I’ve ever known! We never had much! When I was in 6th or 7th grade I wore the same pair of jeans, the same turtleneck and the same sweater my mother knitted for me to school every day! And I couldn’t care less, until one of my friends, who was a year older than me came up and asked why I was wearing the same clothes everyday. To this point I am still grateful for that comment! This is when thrifting and hand-made clothing came into my life! My mom went above and beyond herself knitting and sewing outfits for me! Going to fabric stores was exciting! Going to thrift stores was an adventure!

By the time I was in 9th grade I was getting constant compliments on my outfits from peers and even teachers, even though I had the same pair of jeans as one of the guys in class! But that’s when unisex was in, so I didn’t care! I also never said no to hand-me-downs, and even though I didn’t have older siblings, I had plenty of friends and knew enough Missionaries who always left clothes behind!

College came around, and I made sure I got good grades to get a monthly stipend through the University. Yes, I got paid to go to school! This is probably going to fall into the “Only in Russia…” category. This was also the time when more and more thrift stores popped up all over our town, and they often had great sales, that I couldn’t resist!

Thrifting is what helped me continually save up money for my trips to Europe and the States, and now that I live here, it’s becoming my meal ticket! Finding a great thrift store takes time, so today I am going to share some of my favorite locations here in the Twin Cities, and the best times to shop there!

Salvation Army in the Warehouse district900 N 4th St, Minneapolis, MN  – every day is a 50% off a certain color, so stop by often! Plus they offer 50% off clothing during most major holidays! I am not even going to mention the Target overstock located in the basement – you have to see it for yourselves!

Steeple People on Lyndale and Franklin – 2004 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, MN – I blogged about it before, and I will do it again – they have great vintage selection, beautiful artwork and prints, great household section, etc., etc. The only downside is – they only take cash or check!

Goodwill in Hopkins1025 Hill St, Hopkins, MN – This was my go-to Goodwill when I used to babysit for a family in St.Louis Park! And I always referred to it as the Hopkins Goodwill, or Goodwill on Excelsior Blvd. Now why this particular Goodwill? – It’s cheaper, it has more vintage and authentic items, it’s been good to me! Generous if you want to put it this way! I can always find something that I like there! Now why am I not mentioning the Goodwill in Minnetonka, or Goodwill in Roseville, you may ask? The Minnetonka Goodwill will always be famous in my book for the Xanax pills I found in a pocket of one of the sweaters bought there! And Goodwill in Roseville is too good for me to be sharing it with you, but now I did, and now you know!

Savers – I am yet to find a Savers that I don’t like! Seriously, they need a Savers in every state and county! They never overprice vintage items, and the only pieces of clothing that can be pricey are the brand new ones, with original tags still attached. And don’t forget to sign up for a Super Savers Club Card, they will send you emails with special promotions and coupons!

So here you have it, the story of my life that revolves around thrifting! And I couldn’t be happier! After all, it’s not all about the money!

Happy Thursday everyone! And don’t forget to stop by tomorrow for a DIY friday fashion and style project and an important BeingZhenya announcement!

XO,

Z

PS. Please keep in mind that my husband and I don’t have any student loans to pay off, our monthly expenses are limited down to rent, groceries, gas and car payments, plus the occasional going out and thrifting shopping sprees!

In the next post on money related subject, we’ll talk about freebies and the best websites where you can get them!

Cleaning up and cleaning out

2013-03-13 21.19.32

After venting out yesterday and receiving a TON of feedback, all of which I truly appreciate, I came up with this note, that I posted by the door:

letter to self

I wanted to make it simple, easy and short. I didn’t simply write – get off of your lazy butt and do something, I went deeper into the issue, and ended up with this! I also cleaned! And here are the shots:

2013-03-13 21.10.53

The dining table, where you can actually eat now, and that’s what Sam and I did tonight! Plus all the chairs are clutter free and you can sit down! How awesome is that? I have also decided to keep my sewing machine on the floor. I don’t have a good spot for it just yet.

2013-03-13 21.11.06

Wow, look at this nice carpet! I also vacuumed! And here is something that’s been working for me, when in doubt – vacuum! Seriously, it works!

2013-03-13 21.17.04

And here are the two bags going to donations! I actually did it, I got rid of two giant bags of stuff!

And here you have it, all in a nutshell! After all, this is a 600 sq ft apartment! How difficult is it to keep it clean?

Take it easy and take charge!

2013 Resolutions / Новогодние Решения

Happy New Year!

Vintage-New-Years-Postcards
We survived 2012! Can you believe it? With all the crazy Mayan predictions, elections, wars, floods, The New iPad, iPad Mini…

Back when I was in 10th grade I made a list of resolutions that included something like “Getting no C’s on my report card”, “Reading more books”, “Going to the US”… I clearly new what I wanted even in my teens, and I was so compelled by the whole “Resolutions” concept, that I decided to sign it with blood! Thank God I didn’t get an infection, but I am sure the list itself is buried somewhere in the depths of my closet in Russia! And that small blood stain is probably still on it! Gross, I know!

Now with mushroom soup cooking on the stove, I thought it would be appropriate to share my resolutions with you! And even though those are blog related, they can always be translated into everyday life.

1. Stay Focused: It’s so easy to get distracted nowadays, and the biggest distractions on my list are my phone and social media. I am going to try and limit myself from using those. I even get distracted when I blog. I can be half-way through a post, then get side tracked by Twitter, then check my stats on my Facebook page, and well what do you know, it’s been an hour, and the original post isn’t finished yet!

2. Quality over quantity: Over the past couple of years that I’ve been blogging, I’ve been trying to be a part of “Post a Day” that WordPress challenges it’s writers to do. Well, I think I am done with that now! I’d rather give you one or two great posts a week, with good quality pictures and descriptions, than post 7 times a week about some nonsense that no one is interested in, including myself!

3. Give more: This year I want to share and give. Giving chances, giving gifts, giving a hand… I have been thinking about how blessed I am a lot lately. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve it, and I, by no means, want to jinx it, but I have a lot, and the more I have, the more I want to give. That will include more giveaways for you, more opportunities for you, just more for everyone else, who is not me!

4. Be Bilingual: I really want to work on making this blog a place where you can come and learn something new in Russian, or in English, or something new in general. I got to put all that Russian I know to good use! And maybe it won’t be a word for word translation, it will be something! Something bigger and better for the blog I hope!

And there you have it! Happy New Year! What resolutions are you making this year?

Cheers!

Zhenya’s Monday Ramblings

The not so well known “stars” of Russian Dolls, as well as some other women of Brighton Beach got featured in New York Magazine, in an article “Style Tribes: Russian Women of Brighton Beach”. And while some of these women look absolutely gorgeous in their furs and jewels, this photo totally creeps me out. I want to go grab my torch and set out on a witch hunt! Who’s coming with me?

Баба Яга добралась до сокровищ Кощея Бессмертного (Baba Yaga finally got ahold of Koshei’s treasure)

Last Friday I got sent this amazing L’ancome eyeshadow palette in 302 Violet Sweetheart – as some of you may remember I sometimes do consumer testing projects and surveys for L’oreal, and that’s how I get “paid” for it!

I have also been obsessed with finding workouts on Pinterest and pinning them to my Workouts board! How awesome is that? Oh wait, I’ve also been obsessed with doing them! And BodyRockTV! You all should try it!

Happy Monday everyone!

Doodles,

Z

She believe she could, so she DID!

Alright everyone, time to get off your lorals, and get to work! Or to working out, or to finding a job, or to organizing and cleaning out your closet! I am serious! And I mean business. This is going to be a motivational post like no other, and here is why – I can’t stand complainers, I can’t stand people who sit there and wait for things to just work out for them or fall from the sky. Things don’t come to you on a silver platter.

Growing up I was surrounded by missionaries, people who taught me a lot of good things, people I am thankful for, people I am glad I’ve had in my life, but not everyone is destined to be a missionary, it takes skills, it takes training, and a lot A LOT of confidence. You can’t be snotty, you can’t be bitchy, you can’t reject the foreign culture. Unfortunately I’ve seen people like that! I obviously don’t stay in touch with them.

Now complainers and losers come in all shapes and sizes, so here are a few tips on how to identify one, or maybe discover one in yourself! After we identify all of the types, we are going to talk about how to get rid of the loser symptome!

1. Loser, who thinks he is a loser – You guys, it’s all in the State of mind. If you think your life sucks – it will, if you hate your life, it will bite you in the ass, it’s as simple as that!

2. Loser, who doesn’t know he is a loser, but everyone else does – that is the person whose friends talk about him/her after the person leaves the room. This is the person you roll your eyes at. This is the person who has been spoiled by their parents and doesn’t know how to use an ATM (I am 100% serious about this last statement)

3. Complainer who is always jealous – OMG she has such an awesome life, she has the looks, she has the job, she has the perfect husband. Oh we all know people like that!

4. Complainer who is ungrateful – They’ve got the job, they hate it. They’re in a relationship, they talk BS about their partner all the time. Not even seeing starving children in Africa can get this person out of this state!

5. Complainer who is also a loser – those people are doomed, and only divine intervention can help them – unfortunately, not even me with my bitch-slapping skills can get a person out of this state, I doubt that any professional health/care providers can.

Now what do we do about it? If you are a person like that, or you are surrounded by any of the above types – take action!

1. Start working out! Trust me – it always helps. No need to sign up for a gym membership either – just go for a walk or a run around the park.

2. Eat better! Yes, chocolate is good for you, but in small amounts. And by chocolate I don’t  mean Oreos, those are as good for you as lard!

3. Motivate yourself! You are headed towards a goal, a place where you want to be, where you see yourself successful. Here is how I motivate myself – I have a cork board with all the things that I want in life, and yes that includes money and movie star appearance, but i also have a whole bunch of cut outs with quotes about success, and how to achieve it! Remember my Marc Jacobs watch? I only talked about it like what? 10 times already? (okay maybe 2) I had a picture of it on my board for at least a month before i got it. And no I wasn’t waiting for a paycheck – I was waiting to use a coupon 🙂 Getting a 50$ discount off a 200$ watch is always worth the wait! Another thing that motivates me is comparison. And here is where you draw a fine line between comparison and jealousy! There is that good feeling of competition, and a bad feeling of – “Damn, that could’ve been me”. When some one is successful at work – I celebrate it with them! I don’t think about – this could’ve been my customer, or I could’ve had this sale – working as a team takes a lot growing up to do!

4. Think positive! You are not going to find $20 in the street if you don’t want to! I remember I once told my husband – I am going to find $5 today – that day I found a dollar, since then – I’ve found $40! You gotta believe in yourself! Some of you know that I have the “celebrity” syndrome. What the hell is that? – you say – well that’s when I dress up, do my make up the best way that I know it, and go turn heads in our small downtown Minneapolis. Do you know who is more proud of me then? No, not me – my husband.

5. Want to become a better person! It’s not only good for you, but for people who surround you!

6. Forget about fear! I know quiet a lot of people who are afraid to call someone they don’t know. I am related to one of them. Once I even had to call her University to find out some information for her. Jeez, what’s the deal with that? I called over 25 people at work today, telling them about our gift with purchase coming up at Clinique. Have I seen any of those people before? Maybe 2. But it’s my job to sell, and that had to be done! Plus let me tell you a secret –  they can’t see you over the phone!

Lastly: If all of the above failed – RUN AWAY or try some of these affirmations:

– You can’t find yourself – you can only create yourself! –

– Set your goals high, and don’t stop until you get there –

Think highly of yourself, because the world takes you at your own estimate

– The groundwork of all happiness is good health –

Now to all of you who live off of someone else’s money – stop doing that, we all know what you are doing, and don’t cover it up with a “good” cause – if it’s good for you, it doesn’t mean it’s good for everyone else! Go face the real world and show us what you’ve really got, that way you’ll earn some respect!

No hard feelings,

doodles,

Z

PS. This post was inspired by real people, and even though some religious beliefs were involved in the original argument, I am staying out of religion in this post!

Motivational/Wish Board 2012

This is one of the IFB projects of the week, and since today is December, 31, and I was determined to blog and work out (well working out has nothing to do with blogging, but I need to work out twice today, cuz I skipped yesterday… anyways done with the blah blah blah, I’ll tell you all about my working out system sometime next week) I decided to work on this! The task is: Create a Motivational Mood Board and share on your blog! I know that a lot of bloggers have been doing recaps on their blog, the best posts of the last year, stats, and all that, I decided not to do that, but to look into the next year instead and create a motivational wish board. Sounds kinda ironic, I know. Here is the deal – wish boards are very popular in Russia, there is even a YouTube video on how to make one, but since most of you probably don’t speak Russian, I am going to share that with you! And to demonstrate everything, I am going to create a collage! It’s going to consist of 9 parts (like a 3 x 3). Your picture goes in the centre! Top left corner is where the money is going to be, or the riches, or anything that you associate with riches! Fame and Success will be right above your picture. Top right corner is a place for family, kids, etc. To the left of your picture you are going to put something that you enjoy, something that calms you down, or makes you happy. To the right of your picture you are going to put a picture of what you want your house to look like. Bottom left corner is travelling, a place where you want to go. Under your picture you are going to put something related to your career, the way you see yourself at work. And bottom right corner is for important people in your life, or people who inspire you! So you should end up with something like this!

Happy 2012! May all your dreams and wishes come true!
