My friend Jameson of Lessons with Coffee is having a garage sale this weekend. It’s absolutely amazing! shopped it last night and had a blast. Honestly this post wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for that garage sale.

I bought the metallic Ann Taylor skirt, and the vintage pink top I am wearing in the first look there (among other things  of course!)

I’ve also noticed the tendency to post two looks on Thrift Style Thursdays. It might be a coincidence, but let me know if you like it, and I’ll keep styling one item in different ways.

Also, exciting news Thrift Style Thursday now has it’s own Facebook page! So join in!

Happy weekend early everyone! I am off to Colorado tomorrow! Yay road trip!

Twin Cities Travelin’: Como Zoo and St Paul

Tuesdays have become one of my favorite days of the week. Aside from having Tuesdays Off (that’s my Tumblr btw ;) ) I get to spend them with Jameson of Lessons with Coffee and explore Twin Cities like never before.

2014-07-08 10.19.44

Last week we went to Como Zoo, and since I’ve been there multiple times on field trips with kids from work, I knew I wanted to visit Conservatory Gardens. We did however tried to take a picture of giraffes walking outside through the fence, to which a little girl told us that we have to walk around and go through the entrance to do that.

The Conservatory Gardens was a lot of what I expected and more. The inside is beautiful, but I think the Japanese Garden was my favorite, including the bonsai exhibit. Did you know that all bonsai trees are shaped like a triangle? And sometimes there are accent plants that can’t be higher than the top of the pot next to them? I learned so much that day. We met a really helpful volunteer, who told us about the Japanese tea ceremony and the tea house. I love tea, but I don’t think I could drink that green tea that they serve there.

After we visited the Conservatory Gardens the plan was to stop by The Russian Tea House on University Ave. But apparently that place is only open on Fridays 11-3! Too bad, so sad! And I was!

So instead we stopped by Second Debut, took pictures in front of the awesome mural. And then drove to Grand Ave and ate lunch at Salut!

St. Jude Theater of Dreams

the-wiz-stages-theater

Last Thursday I was able to ditch work early to head over to Stage theater in downtown Hopkins to attend St Jude Theater of Dreams. And of course I have a funny story to tell. I was planning on changing into a different dress for the night, but as I was putting it on in the bathroom, the zipper split. So on the verge of nervous breakdown, and fear of being late, I got into my husband’s car and he dropped me off at the event. I ended up changing back into the first dress I was wearing all day. And the dress with the broken zipper? I am planning on refashioning it into a skirt!

The night was great. Celebration of the 3rd annual St. Jude Theater of Dreams started with a Gourmet Pizza Party, premier of The Wiz, and Sweets Reception in the end. There was also an icee truck that I might have taken advantage of ;)

But above all that St. Jude is here to help families with kids who are fighting cancer. And they are doing a wonderful job. The care, the attention, everything that the families get, is free. There are no thousand dollar invoices, there are no insurance claims. It’s just kids being treated and getting well. That’s what St Jude is all about.

As for The Wiz and Stgaes theater – I loved it, every single bit of it. I feel like it’s one of those stories that keeps coming back over and over again, with the Wicked, and Once Upon a Time, and it should, because it reminds us to believe in ourselves and value what’s really important in life.

2014 Minneapolis Oscar Experience

1510860_10150342431059971_270824829_n

Looking for a fun and exciting event to attend this weekend? Why not go to the Oscar Experience in Minneapolis on March 2nd?

The evening will be hosted by TV Personality Laura Schara and Christopher Hopkins, owner of ReVamp Salon and Spa at Muse.

Now celebrating the 21st year, this event is not ONLY the longest running Oscar party in the U.S. outside of Los Angeles, it’s also the ONLY gathering in the state of Minnesota sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Pictures.

What is the best part about living like Hollywood royalty for a night? You get to dress the part, decked out in snazzy attire (black tie optional) suitable for sauntering down the red carpet, sipping on champagne (after being transported to the venue via a luxury UBER car, naturally), pausing for the cameras.

But even better! All proceeds will be split between the charities, Smile Network and Aegis Foundation, making the lavish revelry worthy of a standing ovation.

And, two stars of Oscar nominated film “Captain Phillips” – Mahat Ali (“Elmi”) and Barkhad Abdiraham (“Bilal”) live in Minneapolis and plan to attend the Oscar Experience Minneaplis at Muse. Oscar nominee and Minneapolis resident Barkhad Abdi, up for Best Performance in a Supporting Role (“Muse”) for “Captain Phillips” will be walking the Red Carpet at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

The evening promises to be filled with exciting and fun events, from a red carpet show to dinner, to a silent auction. Plus fabulous swag bags, who can say no to that?

Weigh-In {Ozeri Scale Review}

Stock-photo

Sam and I got a scale. It’s an Ozeri brand, lights up, nice dial, both kilograms and pounds, and of course it made it’s way into our bedroom! Sam steps on it twice a day every day. Me? I am not as keen on the idea. I have even threatened him to throw it away if he doesn’t stop. All those weigh ins make it seem like we are on the Biggest Loser, when in reality it just tells us our healthy weight!

Do you have a scale? If so, are you obsessed with it?

Happy Tuesday!

Zhenya

Disclosure: the scale was provided by the brand for review, in exchange for my honest opinion.

A little more about the scale (as seen on Amazon.com)

  • Synchronized electro-mechanical Dial and LCD automatically illuminate and instantly point to your weight in lbs and kg, for easy-to read results in all light conditions and from any angle.
  • Visually stunning design incorporates a huge 5.5 inch dial and integrated digital display with stylish chrome accents to create a distinctive retro look with the accuracy of modern technology.
  • Uses 4 high precision GX sensors that weigh up to 400 lbs (180 kg) in 0.2 lbs or 0.1 kg increments, with StepOn technology that captures precise weight measurements upon contact.

  • Auto-calibrated and automatically turns off to conserve battery life. Runs on 3 AAA batteries with a Low Battery Indicator (batteries included). Satisfaction guaranteed.

Lazy Sunday

Have you ever wondered what a style/beauty blogger does on her days off? What does she eat? What does she wear? What does she read?

This weekend, even though it’s been a fantastic, Thanksgiving, cookie baking with friends, 4 day weekend, I …

45967_10153598726765604_894635451_n

- helped Sam rake, bag and mulch the leaves for the winter!

- wrote and scheduled blog posts for the upcoming week,

- finished “Revenge Wears Prada”, sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada”, not as exciting of a read, but a good story nonetheless,

1476690_10153601266905604_2079744052_n

- started getting the house ready for Christmas,

Thrifted tree stand and hand made tree skirt!

- Played with new makeup (reviews, swatches and makeup tutorials to come),

- Made my first meatloaf ever!

- Had a great time lounging around in my sweats watching Sam play video games!

Such is life my dear friends, and that’s exactly what weekends are for!

What have you been up to?

Zhenya

I normally don’t do such type of posts, especially on a Sunday, but I wanted to share a little part of my personal life with you! I know that a lot of you are here for the outfits and the reviews, and I appreciate it. But maybe, just maybe today you are here for me ;)

90′s Style: Plaid and Dr. Martens are Back!

I am going to be honest with you, I can’t get enough of the Dr. Martens I thrifted. They are amazing! And since I told you a story from high school in my last post, I figured I’ll tell you another one from my past today! What can I say, I guess these shoes bring back the memories :)

I was in 7th grade when I discovered thrift stores. There was one big one in Vladimir (my home town), and everyone thought it was the new IT spot. I remember the first time I went there with my mom right before 9th grade. I got a lot of new T-shirts, some overalls (I wish I still had them to style this year :) ) , anyways…

After I got the hang of thrifting, I started wearing more and more new clothes to school. And of course other kids started noticing it. I had a friend in school, his name was Max, and I am pretty sure he knew what was going on, so every time I would wear something new, he’d joke around and say that I got humanitarian aid from the States.

Too bad you are not around anymore, Max…

Happy Tuesday and have a great day!

~Zhenya

Oh hey 90′s, how are you?

When I was in 9th grade, everyone who was anyone seemed to have had Grinders, a European (?) version of Dr. Martens. Some people still had Dr. Martens, but I don’t think I was friends with any of them ;) Everyone called Grinders – sh*& stompers, and that was probably one of the reasons why I didn’t want to buy them, nor did I have the money. I didn’t start working till I was 16, and that was already after I graduated high school.

But I lucked out, and now, 12 years later when I am 27, I can finally go back to my high school years, rocking a pair of Dr. Martens that I scored at the brand new Goodwill here in St. Louis Park! I spent about 2 hours thrifting there on Saturday morning, even got a 15% discount and scored some amazing work out gear and home decor (more on that later and on Goodwill blog!)

How did you spend your Saturday?

I have always wanted to try the lingerie as outerwear trend. So when putting an outfit together for the Minneapolis Blogger Brunch, I finally got it. I’ve had a slip that went with one of my Anthropologie dresses, and every time I put it on, I feel so feminine, so flowy, so sexy… So I simply paired it with my vintage pleated cobalt blue skirt, and a velvet thrifted blazer from Express. I added my “Being Zhenya” necklace and a sapphire ring from Berricle, and was ready to brunch!
