July has been an amazing month full of celebrations and festivities. It started off with a 4 day weekend for the 4th of July, then my Birthday, and finally my friend’s bridal shower. If you know me, you know I have the biggest sweet tooth out there, so I wanted to share one of my favorite brownie recipes, which of course includes Cameron’s Coffee. Because who wouldn’t want a caffeine boost in addition to a sugar rush? I also wanted to share something that was healthy and was a part of my keto diet.

If you’ve never heard of Keto diet before, it’s a low carb diet where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy. I’ve been on and off this diet for a couple months now, and have to say, it would’ve been a lot harder had it not allowed coffee J I will be using Highlander Grog Cameron’s Coffee, which has become my favorite blend.

But let’s move on to the brownie recipe:

You are going to need:

  • 5 cups of coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup ground coffee – Highlander Grog by Cameron’s Coffee
  • 1/2 cup stevia or erythritol
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 2/3 cup coconut flour
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a small sauce pan, melt coconut oil over medium heat. Add the ground coffee, stir in, and remove from heat.
  3. Add the stevia or other sweetener of your choice, vanilla, sea salt, and both the eggs and egg yolk, to the oil. Whisk thoroughly to combine. Add the cocoa powder and flour, then stir until just combined.
  4. Scrape the batter into the pan and smooth the top. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out with moist crumbs, but no wet batter. Leave for an extra 5 minutes if you are baking in the skillet. Let cool to room temperature on a rack, then slice and serve.

3 DAY SOUP + JUICE JUS by JULIE CLEANSE: Day 1 Diary

jus-by-julie-soup-and-juice-cleanse-day-1

Today I started my second cleanse. Why do you ask? Wasn’t the first time enough? Well, let me tell you, this time it’s different. This time I am on a soup and juice cleanse. I am a huge soup fan, I grew up in Russia eating soup for lunch almost every day. I remember my grandma making a big pot of soup over the weekend and it would last us all week. That’s why when I got an opportunity to try this soup and juice cleanse I couldn’t say no.

Before I go into the details of my 1st day of cleansing (please make sure you follow my Insta story for updates throughout the day) I want to let you know that there is a cool and healthy 2017 Plan For a Happy & Healthy Body on JusByJulie.com. You can sign up for email updates, browse other people’s resolutions, and even get a checklist (you know you want to) to help you stay on the healthy track! I got mine already 🙂

This day started early, my husband works out of Chicago one day a week, and today was the day. He takes an early morning train out of Milwaukee, which means our alarm clock starts going off around 4.30 am. I drive Sam to the train around 5.30, and stop at my neighborhood Starbucks on the way home to get a venti coffee. Coffee is normally allowed on the cleanse, just black, no cream or sugar. I don’t have a problem with that, I just need to stay awake.

I leave for work at 7 am. Around 8.30 I drink my first juice – Sweet Spin (140 calories). Work was busy today, and I didn’t get to eat my first soup till noon. However I manage to finish my coffee and drink about 3 bottles of water. My rule of thumb after finishing a juice is refilling the bottle with water, and drinking that. Needless to say I peed on the hour every hour.

jus-by-julie-soup-and-juice-cleanse-day-1

I finally have my Split Pea Soup, and it turns out to be way more filling than expected, while containing only 140 calories.

I save my Pomegranate Juice for 3 pm, it is hands down my favorite juice of all. The spicy kick and whopping 90 calories make it a perfect afternoon pick me upper.

After that the rest of my day is full of more meetings and emails. I don’t leave the office till 6.30 pm, heading to the train station to pick up Sam.

We get home around 7.15 pm, and while my husband enjoys a couple slices of homemade pizza, I heat up my Carrot Ginger Soup (120 calories).

And here I am not writing this post, working through yet another bottle of water. I am feeling great. I wish I would’ve made it to Zumba, but oh well. My fitbit reads 8100 steps, and I am going to try my hardest to make it to 10k before I go to sleep!

I saved Butternut Squash Soup and Chia Berry Juice in my freezer for a rainy day.

So, how was your day?

Whole 30 Chia Seed Pudding Recipe

Happy Friday friends! I am nearing the end of week 1 on Whole 30. As some of you remember I’ve done it once before, and I felt like the beginning of 2017 was a perfect time! I wanted to share my new favorite breakfast with you today.

Let’s be honest here – Chia Seed puddings are trendy. You see them all over Instagram, Pinterest and other social media outlets. I think more people photograph them than actually eat the said pudding.

For me, however, this mason jar contained, berry topped and Instagram filtered breakfast has become a saving grace. I never eat breakfast, my mom never ate breakfast, I never saw my grandma eat breakfast, which could be attributed to the fact that she woke up hours before everyone else to do whatever grandmas do before the sun rise. So imagine me actually eating breakfast now! I hope you are as excited about it as I am.

The below recipe allows me to make 2 servings, making it a double win 😉

You will need:

1 cup frozen berries, I usually by mine at Costco

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

4 tbs chia seeds, I buy 2 lbs bag from Costco

1 banana, but if you don’t have one, don’t fear, it will still work out and thicken

Add some spices for a flavor kick, like vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, or ginger.

Place everything in a blender, I use a Nutri Bullet – another recent obsession of mine 🙂 Then evenly divide the mix between 2 mason jars, and place in the fridge overnight. In the morning, once the pudding is ready to eat, I top it with some fresh berries and enjoy, which I hope you will too 🙂

Do you have a favorite breakfast food? Do tell!

Join me on my 2017 Health and Wellness Journey

2017 journey

Today I am turning a new page here at BeingZhenya.com. I am starting a health and wellness journey that I want to share with you. I’ve been thinking a lot about the blog and whether to continue writing, and I decided that it was time to put more time and effort into it.

Since starting my first big job out of college last August I found myself spending more time on the couch with a glass of wine watching yet another show on Netflix. Even my regular trips to the gym seemed to be pointless.

That’s why I am starting 2017 with another Whole 30 challenge. Sam and I did it a year and a half ago and it worked so well for us. I will be sharing my grocery hauls as well as my favorite recipes with you. And even though the challenge is only 30 days, I am planning on continuing it through the year.

popsugar january jump start

If 30 days seems too long, I would like to recommend the POPSUGAR January Jump Start plan for 2017 which includes clean eating recipes and 2-week workout plan! It’s easy to navigate, and some of the workouts even include videos, so you can simply follow along. I will be continuing attending classes at the WAC, sticking with strength and boot camp, but I will give a more detailed update once I see the January/February schedule.

Another important aspect of my health and wellness journey for 2017 is my mental and emotional health. I’ve noticed that a lot of my friends were battling depression and anxiety. I have been going through a lot over the past few months as well. Some of the major 2016 events included our move to Milwaukee, leaving my Minneapolis friends, graduating from college, starting a new job. It’s stressful when it’s just you, but when you are moving with a spouse, it’s even more so. I’m looking for 2017 to slow down and for things to settle down a bit, but we’ll see. I am planning on spending less time on my phone, more time with my friends and family, more time reading and writing.

I want to wish you all a happy new year, let’s make 2017 kick ass!

Jus by Julie Experience and Aftermath

Jus by Julie

Jus by Julie

I would like to start this post by saying that starting this Jus by Julie cleanse was my own personal decision, this is not a sponsored post, I paid for everything and all opinions are my own.

Okay now that we got this out of the way, let’s talk about the cleanse. Juice cleanses are popular, there are cold press juicers, then there are centrifugal juicers. The first ones are healthier and extract the most vitamins and nutrients which makes them pricey, the second ones are cheaper, making them more affordable. The juicer I have at home was a $30 score from the Target Basement in Minneapolis.

I went with Jus by Julie partially because I knew a few people who did it, and partially because it’s  based out of Brooklyn. (If you don’t know this about me, I am forever and always in love with New York City.) I paid $120 for my 3 day cleanse, which included 18 juices and 12 energy/booster shots.

The juices were different from what I expected. A lot of them included rice milk, and some seemed more like smoothies to me. The booster shots were interesting, some I could take like a shot, some I had to add to 16 oz of water, because drinking them up without diluting them was impossible.

In addition to the juices the cleanse allows you 1-2 cups of tea or coffee a day, plus some steamed vegetables and egg whites. I didn’t actually eat anything because I wasn’t hungry. The juices are incredibly filling and with the amount of water I tried to drink in between, I felt like I couldn’t consume any more food.

Before I started the cleanse I seriously thought I was going bombard social media with complaints of how hungry and miserable I was. However that didn’t happen. Nor did I really have any desire to eat. By the end of day 3 I just wanted the cleanse to be over with, because looking in the mirror at my face was terrifying, my cheekbones started showing even more than they normally do, and to myself I looked sick.

I didn’t lose any weight (I started at 124 and finished at 124), which I personally think was due to the high amount of sugar that the juices contained (at least 16 grams per juice). I felt sick and bloated by the end of day 3. And to be honest, I don’t think this juice cleansed me of anything, but rather messed up my digestion.

Now that it’s been a couple weeks I finally feel like my body has been restored back to normal. I was disappointed in this program. Next time I do a cleanse, I will definitely look more closely into the nutrition that is in the juices.

Interview With Celebrity Trainer Nicole Stuart

Nicole Stuart Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Nicole Stuart, actress and celebrity trainer a couple weeks ago. She was in Minneapolis for the Fabletics store opening at the Mall of America that I blogged about here. It was so much fun to talk to her, learn a few new things about fitness, and of course hear about Kate Hudson’s fitness approach. Nicole has been training celebrities since 1997, and prefers pilates to all other techniques.

And while I realize that I am far from being a good interviewer/journalist, here are a few highlights from our conversation.

A lot of my friends wanted to know specifically about Kate Hudson’s fitness routine.

Nicole: I mostly do pilates with her, but it’s a mish mosh of everything, including TRX (which stands for Total body Resistance eXercise). We also used to run a lot, but I don’t run outside anymore. Kate also does hot yoga. She is open to trying anything, which makes training her a lot of fun and really easy, because you can give her a task and then she does it really well.

I also wanted to ask a few questions about my personal training routine, which mostly consists of running and yoga.

Nicole: Are you happy? Then I wouldn’t change a thing!

There are new workouts popping up almost every day, which is definitely overwhelming. How do you find the right one?

Nicole: I think if you are doing something for a while, and then start thinking “Ugh, I don’t want to go”, start dragging your heels, then you should find something different. But if you are excited to go, and are feeling good after, you like your teacher or you enjoy running with your friends, or whatever it is… I think we know what works and what doesn’t work for our own bodies. And I think we should listen to that inner intuition more.

With all the workouts popping up, there are probably twice as many new diets. Do you have any advice on what to eat before and after the workouts, or on meals in general?

Nicole: I always say – clean eating is very good, simple, nothing processed. If you really want to be strict – no meat, no dairy. Greens, greens, greens, vegetables, vegetables, vegetables. And you can get creative with that. I am getting back more into it after having a baby, so I’ve been a little relaxed on everything. However, I just did this amazing soup cleanse by Elissa Goodman, and I love it. I am doing it again! It’s a 5 day cleanse.

Of course I had to ask about living in LA.

Nicole: I love living in LA, Minnesota is beautiful, but we don’t have the weather element. I love the snow, but I wouldn’t want to live in it (Me neither, Nicole, me neither!). The cool thing about Fabletics though is that they not only have clothes for every type of exercise, but also the weather (freezing, or hot and sunny, you name it).

I was also curious to know if Nicole helped out with any of the product development or design aspect of the creative process.

Nicole: Unfortunately I don’t. It’s a Kate thing. But she asks me if I like certain things 🙂

Do you have any favorite Fabletics pieces?

Nicole: I love the Solar legging and capri, I think they are very basic, plus a new print is launched every month, so that’s the fun thing that changes constantly. As soon as I find an outfit that I’ll wear and wear and wear, a new month comes and a whole new set of clothes comes out. The bright colors motivate me to work out, I want to go run and jump, and be happy. The print also makes your butt look good!

Fabletics is opening 11 more stores this year, so I told them to make sure to invite me to the next store opening 😉

PS. Make sure to check out my green tea smoothie recipe and my Fabletics favorites below!

Happy Spring break! It’s finally warm in Minnesota and it’s so exciting to be outside now, especially when the days are longer. But days when I have classes at the U are really busy for me, and out of the three that I am on campus this semester, Wednesday is probably the busiest. Since my life is so hectic, I make sure I support my immune health with Ester-C every morning. I have just recently picked up this product at Walmart while it was on rollback.

2015-02-12 14.10.24

A few weeks ago I had an especially packed Wednesday. It started with a macro midterm, then an alumni panel in my career and internship prep class where I got to meet amazing people from the industry and one of the girls who also interned for College Fashionista a few years back! I wanted to make sure I had the right questions and learned a lot. One of the most important lessons that I took away from this panel was – Don’t be afraid to tell your boss or manager what you want to do and where you want to go within a company.

10292544_10155111025445604_8337135778753904262_nThen I had my psychology classes, and this week the lectures are not as fun as I would like them to be. I thought I would enjoy this class way more than I am. At least the recitations are not as boring, and our instructor played the cello for us.

10388571_10155243129100604_699990135996783213_n

After my psych lecture was over I met with my friend Lauren to study for our Marketing midterm. Marketing is one of my favorite classes this semester, I wish I could minor in that instead of management, but unfortunately I can’t.

I couldn’t believe I had 2 midterms on the same day before most of my friends this semester. But after that was over, I was ready for more.

Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 1.53.02 PM

I agreed to talk about my blog and blogging experience at the FAB (fashion and business) event later that night. The girls all got together and started their own blog – Campus a la Mode, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with! There are amazing DIYs on there already!

2015-02-12 14.02.55

It was a lot of fun to talk about my experience in blogging and social media, and answer all the questions people had. It was also important to me to support my immune system through the day, that’s why no matter rain or shine I take my vitamin C (Ester-C) in the mornings. It’s such a necessary thing for my busy lifestyle.

Beauty Brunch: Nails and Lips and Detox Drinks

beauty-brunch

Welcome to beauty brunch! Today’s post is all about nails and lips. Remember the teaser I posted last week featuring Sinful Colors Nail Polish? Today we are going to talk about those, as well as some of the other products that I have been using to keep the polish on my nails for more than a day.

sinful-colors-nail-polish

Left to right: Solar Flux, Matte About Blue, Red Tired, Rubber Ball, Rain Rubber, Pipaya

These nail polishes have a very interesting grainy texture and remind me of a color my friend Luchessa sent me from Germany, but that one was specifically advertised as Sand Finish, while these say absolutely nothing on the bottle.

Of course the colors are brilliant and vibrant. I love the look and feel on my nails. As you may have guessed I wore blue and red ones for July 4th, and the color is still lasting. I am glad it didn’t chip on the first day. I have been making sure to use a top coat every time though. My new favorite is Sally Hansen base and top coat, as well as the Big Matte Top coat.

Another summer beauty must-have I want to talk about today is lipsticks, glosses and tinted balms. I have been using a lot of different products lately, and wanted to share my thoughts, looks and opinions on.

nyx-lipstick

These two babies by NYX (Strawberry Milk and Narcissus) have been my go-to this season. I love the pale lip look, it compliments the tan.

A couple other lip favorites have been Maybelline Baby Lips in Oh Orange ($3.99 on Maybelline.com)

And Sigma Lip Gless in Get Ready ($10 on SigmaBeauty.com)

And finally I want to share a couple detox drink recipes with you. If you are like me, plain water doesn’t taste good, so  that will help you stay hydrated and feel good.

rhubarb-compote-recipe

Bring 72 oz of water and 4 tablespoons of stevia to a boil, add 4-5 stalks of rhubarb cut up into 1 inch slices, and let boil for 5 minutes. Let cool, add ice and enjoy!

detox-water-recipe

1 thick slice of lemon, 5-6 freshly picked mint leaves, 5-6 freshly picked lemon balm leaves. Pour boiling water over everything, steep. Drink cold.

I hope you all had a great weekend! Thanks for reading!

Oil Pulling

oil-pulling

It all started during #beautychat, (By the way did you guys know I am addicted to Twitter chats?) when @BeautyHigh mentioned oil pulling. And of course I was immediately intrigued. Having had the same jar of coconut oil in my pantry for over a year, I knew I had to try it. I originally started buying coconut oil for my hair. I used at as a deep conditioning treatment, but got lazy. Though I started again, so sit tight, there will be some amazing hair masks recipes coming up to BeingZhenya.com soon!

So what is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is the latest trend to take the wellness community by storm, but it’s actually a traditional practice in Ayurveda — a holistic medical system from India that dates back 3,000 to 5,000 years. Ayurveda’s key objective: to promote good health and well-being through balancing the mind, body and spirit. According to practitioners, it’s when this balance is disturbed that sickness can occur. To maintain order, specific treatments, including oil pulling, are determined based on a person’s dosha, or mind-body type. (TheDailyBeast.com)

Where do you begin?
All you need is some coconut oil, a spoon, and 20 minutes of your time in the morning. I have been buying my coconut oil from Marshalls/TJ Maxx, but Costco has an extremely appealing deal now for Organic Coconut oil – 2 giant tubs for $23.99. I think I could bathe in that amount of oil! I spend the 20 minutes catching up on blogs, commenting and spreading the blog love, so it’s time well spent for sure.

When I put the oil in my mouth it’s hard, and I let it melt inside, trust me it does it in about 1 minute! My first day was extremely awkward though. The oil kept squirting out of my moth (because I probably had too much in), and dripping down my chin, so I was constantly wiping it up. Now that I’ve been doing it for 2 weeks, I barely even notice.

The first time I tried it my salivary glands kind of freaked out as well, and there was too much saliva in my mouth. But since it’s good for the body and your body knows it, it’s never happened again.

After 20 minutes are up, I spit out the oil in the trash can, since I’ve heard that it’s not good for the septic system (glad I found that out early, because our house is over 50 years old), and brush and floss my teeth like I normally do. I know some people are substituting teeth brushing with oil pulling, that’s up to you.

What are the benefits?
I can list you off what all the magazines and blogs are saying, but let’s be honest, you don’t want to hear that. These are the changes I’ve noticed:

No nasal congestion or sinus problems, even if I wake up congested, after I oil pull, it all goes away. My husband has also been battling a cold, and I haven’t gotten it, which is amazing. I do have a history of really bad sinus infections, and I am so happy this is helping. I can’t do the neti pot, but I can do oil pulling!

No more cystic acne. I had about 2-3 bad ones, which at 27 is pretty embarrassing, but they are gone! And the best thing is – no new acne, not even when I am on my period (sorry for the TMI)!

No more Chapstick! Oil pulling keeps my lips soft and moisturized throughout the day! Now if it could only do the same for my hands!

What do you think? A new crazy trend or a great way to detox your body? I created a little fact sheet for you in case you want to give it a shot!
