Beauty on a Dime {Guest Post}

photo (3)Today’s Beauty post is by Michelle from Skana Spa in Upstate New York. She is here to share tips and tricks of her trade! Enjoy!

No matter how busy of a schedule you may have you should always find time for yourself. Every woman loves to get away to the spa for a day of beauty and relaxation but that isn’t always an option. However there are alternatives, with a couple ingredients you probably have in your house you can make yourself a rejuvenating body scrub.

Now And Then the best remedies are those that are the least expected. In the case of skin, one of the most efficient means for cleaning pores is more dirt. Minerals picked up from quarries. Volcanic ash, and sea beds around the globe, cosmetic clay holds a multitude of minerals that nourish the skin and are naturally absorbent qualities help draw out debris, excess oils, remove dead skin cells and even contagions from pores. Applied once a week, a clay mask results in a soft, supple, genuinely clean skin texture.

Mixing cosmetic clay powder with cold, filtered tap water is the easiest method to make a mask, but there can be additional perks by taking advantage of other liquids. Cool green tea produces an additional antioxidant boost that may help slow down the development of fine lines. To soothe irritated or dry skin, try combining the clay with cold milk or heavy cream.

To start off, add one tablespoonful of tap water, green tea, or milk to a small container. Continue to add tablespoons of fine cosmetic clay powder to the liquid mixing to prevent clumps. The resulting paste should be smooth; if it is too thick or runny, add a couple of drops of tap water or a little extra clay to reach the desired texture.

mask-mixed-1024x680

Cleanse skin thoroughly with facial cleanser and warm water and gently pat skin dry.

Place a warm wet cloth over the face for a minute or two to open up pores before smoothing on the mud mask. This will allow the mud to absorb more oil and impurities in the skin.

Using fingers, smooth the mud mask over the face beginning with sides of the face and brow applying the paste in a thick layer to clean, dry skin. Make sure to keep away from the eyes and lips.

A one-inch paintbrush can be used for an even application. While the mask is drying, sit back and relax. Staying still will make sure the clay does not crack or fall off.

After 10 to 12 minutes, wipe mask off with a very hot washcloth. Periodically run the washcloth under hot tap water, and squeeze out any excess water then press it to the face to soften the clay. Then, lightly wash off the mask in a circular movement. Rinse with lukewarm water.

Pat skin dry with a soft towel and then follow up with a mild toner and moisturizer to soften skin and nourish it throughout the day.

Some types of clay are a mild skin purifier that does not soak up oil, which makes them safe for dry or delicate skin textures. Others types deep clean and remove oils and toxins from the skin, which can help oily skin and minimize the impacts of pollution. For optimal results, opt for one that best suits each skin type.

Refrigerate any remaining mask for up to one month in an airtight container and reapply once a week.

I hope you find this post useful! And don’t forget that I am participating in the Refashion Runway contest! Please vote here, to keep me in the competition and see more of my refashions!

A couple weeks ago I attended one of the Minnesota bloggers meet-up events, which was a yoga class lead by Katie of  Strawberry Halls Forever. It was an amazing experience, not only because I got to meet other bloggers in the area, but also because it was my very first yoga class!

248388_10101022935915191_1686039677_n

I have been doing yoga for over 4 years now, but never in a group! I am a loner (read cheapskate ;) ) when it comes to working out. I love my work out DVDs and videos I find on YouTube (check out Fitness Blender – it’s one of the best resources out there!)

Now I got into yoga by accident, and let me explain how it happened! Back in my good old nannying days when I lived on the Upper West Side everyone and everything breathed and talked yoga! You see I was always more of a runner, and I loved my strength training as well! Remember Cindy Crawford’s videos from the 1990′s? Those were my go-to workouts for many years! My mom got me into them back when I was in 8th grade! And I still do them 2-3 times a week, though I’ve switched over to Jillian Michaels since then! But let’s return to the UWS though… I was really into FIT.TV and since the family I worked for had Warner Cable, I took advantage of it every day! I got into Gilad’s workouts, and Namaste Yoga by Kate Potter was on right after! So I gave it a shot and FELL IN LOVE! And have been doing it ever since! I tried other workouts by other instructors, but Kate Potter won me over!

And even though I’ve been doing yoga all by myself for a long time, I feel like it’s one of those experiences you need to live through as a group, so one of my goals this summer is to find a yoga class to join, so if you know of a good one in Minneapolis and western suburbs area, please let me know!

Another thing that I’ve come to realize is that I don’t really have any good yoga clothes, and to me being fashionable at yoga is much more important than when I go for a run. So as I was looking for cute yoga clothes, I came across C9 brand at Target!

3316

They have very affordable and stylish work out clothes, designed specifically for yogis :) And if you watch their website close enough, you can get coupons and discounts on C9 brand pretty often!

3315

Show style and strength in this yoga top by C9 by Champion, exclusive to Target!

3312Bust a (yoga) move in these stylish, snazzy pants from C9 by Champion, a Target-exclusive line of fitness.

3313

Love yoga? Or just love comfy, stylish yoga pants that keep you covered no matter what? Whatever your yoga pants-wearing style, C9 by Champion at Target has you covered!

3317

What gives you peace and strength? Whatever motivates you, C9 by Champion apparel has you covered!
I am definitely going to Target to get myself some cute and colorful yoga tops and comfy stretchy pants (don’t worry, those will be worn to yoga classes alone ;) ) Where do you shop for yoga clothes and what type/style of yoga would you recommend?

Ho-ho-ho Green Giant

Thanks to Product Hoochie, I have recently joined BzzAgent, and unlike other “freebies” websites, this one seems more legit than others. Maybe because I’ve been getting and will be getting a lot of products to try and review, maybe because it’s easier and hassle free?!

Today’s post is dedicated to the Green Giant Veggie Snack Chips, that I got in the mail last week!

4879800254_51561951048628352692

533824_10152770631825604_1682585212_n

What was in my box?

  • A FREE full-size bag of Green Giant Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips with Zesty Cheddar
  • A FREE full-size bag of Green Giant Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips with Sea Salt
  • 4 Sample pouches that were immediately utilized by my husband as an addition to his lunch (that I pack every day!)
  • Pass-along coupons

Here is what Green Giant says:

  • Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips with Zesty Cheddarare crispy tortilla chips made with real vegetables like carrot, broccoli, and tomato, plus 17g of whole grain
  • Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips with Sea Salt are made with real sweet potatoes and 14g of whole grain, with 40% less fat than regular potato chips*
  • *Green Giant Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips (6g per 28g serving) have 40 percent less fat than regular potato chips (10g per 28g serving).

Here is what I think:

Sweet potato chips taste just like any other sweet potato chips, and are nothing extra ordinary. They are a good snack, and that’s just about it! I am not a huge fan of sweet potatoes to begin with, but I can tolerate it in this shape and form!

Zesty cheddar taste very similar to Doritos, but don’t leave you with orange fingers like the latter, so I guess that’s good! But they aren’t that healthy, as you might think they are in the beginning! I tried them with hummus, and that tasted good, but again, nothing that made my taste buds explode!

Am I going to buy this product? Maybe, depends on whether or not it’s on sale, and whether or not I can use my coupons on it. Otherwise, it’s really nothing new and different!

Let me know what you think of these, whether you got them for free, or bought at the store!

Cheers,

Z

PS. This product was sent to me for free through BzzAgent

My Adventures in Juicing

Yes, dear readers, I fell a victim to one of the most popular trends that can take place in your kitchen – juicing! Having watched some documentary on Netflix, I think it was called Hungry for Change, I started researching and googling different juicers everywhere I went! I kid you not, I tweeted about juicers, stalked people on Instagram, asking them which one they use, etc etc

And finally I got one! A GE 800 watt Juice Extractor:

537018_10152762267430604_1277097443_n

This juicer usually runs for about $50, and is considered a good started juicer. I bought it for $25, at the Salvation Army Target Overstock in the Warehouse District in Minneapolis (let me know if you need directions ;) )

There were two juicers there at the time, this one, and another, I forget the brand, but it cost $60! Knowing me, and my husband, who didn’t want to spend the extra money, I got the cheaper one, besides it came with the box, which made me trust it more! I also took it all out, including the instructions, read everything 3 times over, including 20+ reviews on the internet (which went from great juicer to this product sucks) and headed for the check out!

Let me be honest with you, so far it’s great! I am not going to say that it’s the best $25 I’ve ever spent, no I don’t think so, but I got myself a pretty good deal, a great juicer, and a healthier diet thanks to it!

Of course when you buy a product like this your first urge is to juice everything in the house, even the foods that don’t go in there! Hold your urge! Talk to friends or read blogs about juicing, then start your process!

Here is what I learned after 1 week of everyday juicing:

- Never ever juice a grapefruit!

- Tomato juice is actually pink, not red!

- One cucumber contains about 12 oz of juice!

- Carrot juice is neon orange and I love it!

- One 8 oz glass of fresh juice will last you up to 5 hours with no food!

- There are way more people who juice on Instagram than I thought!

- Juicing is considered a part of raw foods movement

- Some people recommend to detox using fresh juice 3 days out of the month, every month!

- I have been doing dishes more regularly with the juicer!

- It’s better to juice into a tall glass than a short glass (just because it’s easier to prevent spilling)

- You can use left over pulp for muffins or combine it with cat/dog food!

There is so much to learn about this, and even though I sound sarcastic at times, I am absolutely happy with my new toy! Sam on the other hand isn’t, he says it’s gross! And asks me not to let him smell it :)

Now about the juices! I have been trying to document each and every one of them on Instagram last week, to make it easier for me when I was going to blog about it! I think it worked:

Carrot and apple juice (about 2 apples and 4 carrots for 8 oz)

526384_10152773020280604_2000751850_n

Orange, carrot and kiwi juice (I can’t remember how much I used of each fruit now, but I know for sure there was only 1 kiwi!)

559894_10152775717700604_1141979427_n

Cucumber, celery, tomato (loved this combo, and cucumber juice alone!)

60601_10152778257195604_1094788448_n

Pineapple, celery juice

555863_10152779335565604_1194666629_n

Have you ever tried juicing? If so, how did you like it?

Have a great day everyone,

Xo,

Z

Cleaning up and cleaning out

2013-03-13 21.19.32

After venting out yesterday and receiving a TON of feedback, all of which I truly appreciate, I came up with this note, that I posted by the door:

letter to self

I wanted to make it simple, easy and short. I didn’t simply write – get off of your lazy butt and do something, I went deeper into the issue, and ended up with this! I also cleaned! And here are the shots:

2013-03-13 21.10.53

The dining table, where you can actually eat now, and that’s what Sam and I did tonight! Plus all the chairs are clutter free and you can sit down! How awesome is that? I have also decided to keep my sewing machine on the floor. I don’t have a good spot for it just yet.

2013-03-13 21.11.06

Wow, look at this nice carpet! I also vacuumed! And here is something that’s been working for me, when in doubt – vacuum! Seriously, it works!

2013-03-13 21.17.04

And here are the two bags going to donations! I actually did it, I got rid of two giant bags of stuff!

And here you have it, all in a nutshell! After all, this is a 600 sq ft apartment! How difficult is it to keep it clean?

Take it easy and take charge!

Advanced days are Over

And by that I mean the whitening days are over for my husband, remember these?

2012-11-07 21.15.07

Sam started using them a little over 20 days ago, and Wednesday was his last strip! Let’s see if you can see the difference?

Day 1:

2012-11-08 21.44.33

Day 20:

2012-11-28 00.10.46

I think it looks pretty white! I lot better than what we started off with! Now let’s see how long the effect lasts. Sam did complain about increase in sensitivity though, so that’s a definite downside. Otherwise it works!

Happy Friday,

Zhenya

Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips Challenge ft. my husband!

If You’re Not Whitening, You’re Yellowing.”

Disclosure: Crest 3D Whitestrips were sent to me free of charge through Influenster. To learn more, please check out the link.

Poor Sam… It all started 10 days ago, after we came back from Fargo and I received this in the mail:

These are no ordinary Whitestrips boys and girls, these are Advanced Seal, which means you can drink water while wearing them!

Here is the sad thing though, back when I was in college I used to whiten my teeth using Crest White Strips, and I did it a lot. I seriously think I overdid it! My teeth became super sensitive (I can only use certain kinds of toothpaste and mouthwash now), though they are still pretty white! I guess something good did come out of these.

It took me a few days to realize that even though I can’t use them, Sam can! To my surprise, he gladly agreed to whiten his teeth!

I do apologize for lighting in some of those pictures! But I hope you’ll be able to see the difference! I can definitely see it, and so can Sam, and plus he still has 10 more days to go!

Before:

Day 1:

Day 2:

Day 3:

Day 4:

Day 5:

Day 6:

Day 7:

Day 8: I totally missed out on taking a picture that day :/

Day 9:

Day 10:

Well you get the idea! I’ll definitely post again in 10 days, after the course has been complete! I know it’s a rather pricey product! We saw it for $43.99 at Target today. But the cheaper versions work just as well. And I know that Crest offers a lot of mail in rebates, or you can get ExtraBucks for buying WhiteStips at CVS!

I definitely recommend the WhiteStrips, unless you have very very sensitive teeth. Even though instructions say that whitening won’t harm your teeth, any kind of whitening harms your teeth! So in the end definitely talk to your dentist and make a decision!

Cheers,

Zhenya

PS. Sam has also been growing a beard because it’s Novembeard. Let’s all support Prostate Cancer Research!

Influenster Beauty Bloggers VoxBox 2012

Blogging, just like everything in life comes with it’s own perks. Today I am sharing one of mine – the Influenster Beauty Bloggers VoxBox 2012. I’ve recently received it in the mail. It was sent to me from this amazing website – Influenster.com . I highly recommend that you give this website a shot, especially if you are beauty/skincare/makeup obsessed, or just like free stuff :) Plus the website has a new updated interface, which is way more user friendly, the reviews are easy to find and are honest, because they are written by ordinary people, just like you and me!

So what was in my box?

I was kind of upset because I didn’t get a bonus item. Select members got either a Vitabath Fragrance Mist or a Boots No 7 Beautiful Skin. I really wish I would’ve gotten the latter, I’ve been dying to try that line. I guess I’ll just have to splurge and buy some of the products. Thankfully that line is available at Target!

Here is my super cute miniature candle, the box also included a $10 coupon on a 3 wick Bath & Body Works candle, but since I’ve already done all of my candle shopping for the season, I think I am going to hold off on that one! Let me know if you want that coupon and I’ll mail it to you!

Another thing that I have tried out of the box, and probably what I was most excited for was this NYC palette, which includes 4 eyeshadows (2 matte, 2 shimmer), a primer and a creamy illuminator. I used it to do my makeup on Friday!

I have also tried the EBOOST powder, mixed it with my water and drank it last night! That thing fizzes up!

I don’t think I’ll be purchasing this anytime soon, because a box of 20 pouches (single servings) is $28! Airborne serves the same purpose, and is much more affordable! If you are looking for a good Airborne knock-off try CVS brand, I’ve tried that and Target brand and I can definitely say that CVS is much closer to the real thing than Target!

And finally there is a 1.5 oz tube of Not Your Mother’s Smooth Moves Frizz Control Hair Cream, Kiss Ever Pro Lashes Starter Kit and Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin – I will dedicate separate posts to those two products, though I am kind of skeptical about the pins, maybe it’s the fact that I have rather fine hair :)

So there you have it, my Beauty Blogger VoxBox 2012! Did you get a box? What was in it? What do you like or dislike about it? Do tell!

Tuna Soup

I am going through my soup stage. Plus it’s one of those dishes, that will last a while. I never freeze my soups though, I know some people do, but I prefer to just finish it during the week.

Today I was super excited to try making Tuna Soup, like my grandma used to, when I was little.

Here is the recipe:

1 Onion

3 carrots

4 potatoes

2 cans of tuna (I used one in water, I believe you can also get one in oil, but I would recommend tuna in water for this recipe)

salt, pepper, dill or parsley (if you are into that stuff ;) )

You are going to start up by dicing the potatoes and boiling them in about 2 liters of water. Please don’t hate me for going all metric on you. If you are like me, you’ll wing it :)

Now you want to fully cook the potatoes, so give them about 20 minutes or so. Meanwhile, prepare the carrots and the onions:

I used butter to sauté the vegetables, but if you want to, you can use oil :)

You are going to add the veggies and the tuna to the potatoes, once those are thoroughly cooked,

then let it cook for 10 more minutes or so, add salt, pepper, some dill, parsley if you want to, and you are done!

Enjoy the yumminess! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend!

Xo,

Zhenya

Sorrel Soup

The what? The who? And where did I get it? First of all, here is what sorrel looks like:

It’s nice and sour, I remember eating it as a child, it’s amazing with sugar! Stumbling across sorrel while walking in the forest was considered the best of luck, but that was back when I was 7, of course. I don’t know if it grows in the wild here, but in Russia it did :)

Fortunately for me, my mother-in-law is growing some sorrel in her garden. And fortunately for you, I am going to share one of the best recipes of my childhood with you today!

1. You are going to start by making a broth (unless you are using a pre-made broth), I always make chicken broth, because I always seem to have chicken in my freezer. I really hope you know how to make chicken broth, but just in case you don’t, here is how:

- bring 1.5 lb of chicken in 64 oz of water to a boil, removing the foam from the surface;

- add 1 diced onion, and 1 graded carrot, boil for 45 minutes;

- add salt, pepper and bay leaf, boil for another 15 minutes;

- take out the chicken, cut it into small pieces, get rid of the bone (if you were using chicken on the bone), rid of the onion and carrot, toss those,

And your broth is done!

2. Wash and cut sorrel, make sure to get rid of the stems, unless you really want those in your soup ;) .

3. Peel and slice 5 potatoes, dice another onion and grade one more carrot.

4. Sautee the onion and the carrot.

5. Bring broth to a boil, add the potatoes, and cook for 15-20 minutes.

6. Add onions and carrots, cook for 5 more minutes.

7. Add sorrel and cook for 2 more minutes.

8. Finally add the chicken, salt and pepper.

This soup is meant to be served with sour cream and half a boiled egg :)

I hope you try this recipe, fall is here, and hot soup is one of my favorite foods of the season :)

Xo,

Z

PS. I’ll have an update post tomorrow, just to share what’s been going on in my life :)
