Beauty Brunch: Bath and Beyond

beauty-brunch-detox-bath

A couple weeks ago I asked Sam to pick up a new body wash for me at the store. Here is what he came home with. I think he did pretty well, don’t you?

olay-body-wash

Sand, water, salt and wind. Summer obviously calls for constant manis, pedis, and pampering. Detox baths are relaxing, rejuvenating and according to some, even help weight-loss. I have 4 recipes for you today, enjoy!

Rose Petal Bath

Few drops of Rose Essential oil

Soak for 20-25 minutes.

And while you are taking your beauty bath, don’t forget about your hair! These are a few of the hair masks I’ve been using lately.

I was pleasantly surprised by the L’Oreal ones ($5.99 each at Target), they both work great on my color treated hair, leaving it soft and shiny. Arvazallia product was already featured on my blog, so make sure to read the review here!

What hair products have you been using lately?

Thanks for tuning in to another beauty brunch! Have a great week!

Arvazallia Hair Products Review

arvazallia-hair-care arvazallia-hydrating-oil-mask arvazallia-premium-argan-oil-hair-treatment I have been loving my new hair cut, and the balayage I got a couple months ago, but it’s summer now, and my hair needs an extra UMPF! So in my attempts to beef it up, I have been searching for new hair products, that would help it. That’s when I came across Arvazallia (or they came across me on Brand Backer). Today I am going to share my tips and reviews on these two products: Premium Argan Oil Hair Treatment and Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask Before I even started using the products, the brand representative filled me in on how to use them. That was so helpful, since sometimes, there are many ways of using one product, but there is not enough room to list it on the packaging.

Premium Argan Oil Hair Treatment

• Makes frizzy and difficult hair Soft, Silky, and Easier to Manage
• Awakens dull hair by giving it a Magnificent Shine
• Nourishes, Restores, and Strengthens over-processed, damaged, and brittle hair
• Residue-free oil Absorbs Quickly and Leaves Hair Feeling Light and Smelling Great
• Moisturizes dry scalp and Protects from harmful UV rays
• Heat Protectant that protects your hair from damage caused by hair irons
• Enhances color treatments to ensure an even application

This is a very versatile treatment that can be used many ways. We recommend to get the maximum results for your hair that you apply it to damp or towel-dried hair and then reapplying after styling.

Step 1: Pump 2-4 pumps of oil into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together.

Step 2: Run your fingers through your hair working the oil throughout your hair beginning from the root and working outward towards the ends. If you have naturally oily scalp or longer hair, you can apply from mid-length downward and then work your way up towards the roots.

Step 3: Allow your hair to air dry or you can blow dry your hair and style as usual. Because of the detangling effects of the oil it helps to improve drying time. It also acts as a heat protectant and helps protect your hair from heat damage when blow drying or using hair irons.

Step 4: After you’ve finished drying and styling your hair, apply another 1-2 pumps of oil using the same process to control loose out of place hair and to further condition your hair and give it a beautiful and radiant shine.

My experience: This is a great smelling product in beautiful packaging. I also feel like I don’t have to use as much of it. It’s often hard to remember to use a small amount of product for me. I tend to overuse everything.

Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask

• Deeply Conditions, Hydrates, and Moisturizes Hair Giving it a Soft and Silky Texture
• Repairs, Restores, and Strengthens weak, damaged, and over-processed hair
• Revives Dull and Dry Hair Improving its Manageability and Elasticity and giving it a Beautiful Shine
• Nourishes Hair with the Highest Quality Cosmetic Grade Argan Oil Rich in Essential Vitamins and Nutrients
• Protects and Shields Hair from Damage Caused by Heat Styling

How to apply: Arvazallia Hydrating Argan Oil Mask should be used in place of your hair conditioner. Apply a generous amount of the mask to clean shampooed hair that is still damp or lightly towel-dried. Comb the treatment through your hair to allow it to be evenly distributed throughout your hair. Allow it to absorb into your hair for 5 to 7 minutes and then thoroughly rinse the mask from your hair. Next style your hair as usual.
How often to use: Arvazallia Hydrating Argan Oil Mask should only be used 1-2 times per week.

Maximizing Your Results: For deeper conditioning, restoration, and to further improve manageability and shine following the mask treatment, apply 1-3 pumps of Arvazallia Premium Argan Oil Hair Treatment to your hair after styling.

For Thick or Coarse Hair: For very thick or coarse hair you can add and mix in 2-4 Pumps of Arvazallia Premium Argan Oil Hair Treatment to the Mask prior to applying it to further improve manageability, elasticity, and shine. My experience: I love using this mask in place of my conditioner. Once again, it helps me not to overuse products. I keep a plastic wide tooth comb (I got from Gift with Purchase at Estee Lauder) in my bathroom just for that. Overall these products are definitely benefiting my hair. And if I were to pick a favorite, I wouldn’t be able to do that, because both of them are now an essential part of my hair care routine.  The biggest downside for me though is that these products are made in China. I searched my stash high and low and only found one other product (out of hundreds) that is made there as well.

{Bare Love Hair} Luxury Hair Fuel Review

Hair is every woman’s pride and joy! And today I’m going to share with you one of my newly discovered secrets. A product by Bare Love Hair – Luxury Hair Fuel.

2013-08-19 09.50.02

Luxury Hair Fuel is hair and scalp treatment that is supposed to help rid hair of dullness and dryness and if used on the scalp, it prevents flaking and dryness.
There are two different ways you can use this product:
- applying it to towel dry hair prior to styling,
- massaging it into the scalp prior to shampooing.
And all you need is one pump!
Since my hair has been rather dry this summer, due to spending a lot of time outside in the sun, I thought this was a perfect product for me to try!
Surprisingly, one pump is enough, and two is too much! Trust me, you don’t want to overdo it, even if you have long hair, you’ll end up with greasy locks and that never looks attractive.
The good:
- it’s an all-natural blend of skin-compatible oils,
- it moisturizers and adds shine,
- smells beautifully,
- helps control frizz and defines hair’s natural curl
- it’s made with a unique OlioLove Technology that is exclusive to the brand.
The bad:
- it’s pricey $28 for 1 oz,
- the pump spits at you when you are trying to get the product out and squirts all over the place, which leads to product waste,
- your hair will look greasy if you do two or more pumps.

New Hair, I do Care!

Saturday I had my first experience getting my hair done at the Aveda school. It’s located in North East Minneapolis, right behind St. Anthony Main. And they have not one, but TWO parking lots!

I kind of knew what I was getting myself into. Back when I lived in New York, the woman I worked for used to get her hair done at Aveda school, it was super cheap, but took forever.

It’s also been forever since my last hair cut in September:

2012-12-01 22.09.57

So 9 am there I was at the Aveda school. Here is how it all works:

You call a number and make an appointment.

On the day when you are supposed to go you show up there wait in line.

You will also sign a waiver saying you realize that your hair is going to be treated by students.

If you’ve signed up for any sort of color services, they do a skin test behind your ear.

Then you simply sit there and wait for your name to be called.

I loved my long hair though, and definitely didn’t want to lose more than 1 inch! I was also getting highlights. Sam has been asking me to go blond for a long time now. And I finally gave in.

So when I came home looking like this:

401611_10152356105090604_441144031_n

… he said I wasn’t his wife :)

So what are the pros and cons of getting your hair done by a student?

Pros:

1. The price: It’s cheap, I only paid $46 for the cut, a blowout and partial foils.

2. They are very attentive. I loved the lady who did my hair, she was an older woman from Vietnam, and told me stories from when she just moved to the States in the 80′s. Plus I got a back rub and a hand massage!

Cons:

1. It takes forever, there is some paperwork they need to fill out, and show the teachers. I was in the chair for 4 hours, during which about an hour was just sitting around, and my husband kept wondering why it was taking so long!

2. You never know who you are going to get. There are a lot of students, and it’s a cat in the bag for them and for you.

3. They are kind of pushy when it comes to Aveda products. I’ve used Aveda before and it’s really not all that natural as they make it sound. Just make sure to say no, when you need to!

In the end, I was happy with my cut and color. One of the teachers came and fixed my hair, because apparently it was longer on one side, but overall I had a pretty enjoyable experience and will definitely consider going back there!

Hope you all had a great weekend! It sure snowed here a lot!

Product Review Week: Not Your Mother’s Hair Products

I am starting a new section on BeingZhenya.com – Product Review Week, since there are a few product reviews that I need to write :) Plus being the skincare/makeup junkie that I am, I definitely have something to say! Some of the products mentioned in my posts were sent to me through Influenster and their Beauty Bogger system. It’s like receiving a Birch Box or a Glossy box, but for free and not every month :) Influenster used to be an open website, but it’s by Invitation only right now, or you need to request membership! I have a few email invites left, so if you want one, leave your email in the comments below, but make sure to join! It is fun and you get free stuff :)

So today I want to talk to you about Not Your Mother’s Frizz Control Cream:

The full size product (4 oz) retails for $5.99 at places like CVS, Walmart and Ulta. I have never heard of this brand until I received my VoxBox.

Now the big question before using this product is – How frizzy is your hair? And the most important thing to remember is – DON’T BE HARSH ON YOURSELF!

Back in the summer of 2011 when I moved to the Land of Lakes aka Minnesota, my hair went bonkers, my skin freaked out, etc. etc. etc. But now, after having lived here for almost a year and a half, after my hair has grown longer, gotten used to the water and the products that I switched to (especially the oils), I can’t say that it’s THAT frizzy anymore.

So the 2011 Zhenya would probably be extremely jealous of the 2012 Zhenya (thank God I am one person!)

Now lets talk about the product and the ingredients. The outside says it’s infused with Coconut and Silk extracts. Here is what’s inside:

Water (Aqua), Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Polyquaternium 55, Aminopropyl Phenyl Trimethicone, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Polysorbate 20, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Fruit Extract), Hydrolyzed Silk, Oleth 20, Propylene Glycol, Disodium EDTA, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butycarbamate, Fragrance

I love reading the ingredients. And thought I’d throw them at you, just in case you like them too!

Of course I didn’t get the full size version of the product ( I WISH!) but I got a small tube of 1.5 oz (44 ml) but a little does go a long way here! It really does!

Let’s talk about application now! I’ve applied it both to towel dry hair, and completely dry hair (NB: I almost always air dry my hair!) And I like it better on dry! Yes, I do! Are you surprised? I just feel like it added more shine, and more control to my hair! When I applied it to damp hair, I honestly didn’t see any difference, my hair still got frizzy on the ends, and I ended up tying it up into a bun :/

The product itself smells very much like Coconut oil, I hope it’s not a deal breaker for you, because out of all drug store products that I’ve tried (read: Aussie, Tresemme, Fructis, etc) – this is the best one! I will give it 4 stars out of 5!

And there you have it! If you ask me, I would definitely recommend this product! It’s great value for the money (and you know how thrifty I am!)

Stay tuned for more beauty reviews this week!

Influenster Beauty Bloggers VoxBox 2012

Blogging, just like everything in life comes with it’s own perks. Today I am sharing one of mine – the Influenster Beauty Bloggers VoxBox 2012. I’ve recently received it in the mail. It was sent to me from this amazing website – Influenster.com . I highly recommend that you give this website a shot, especially if you are beauty/skincare/makeup obsessed, or just like free stuff :) Plus the website has a new updated interface, which is way more user friendly, the reviews are easy to find and are honest, because they are written by ordinary people, just like you and me!

So what was in my box?

I was kind of upset because I didn’t get a bonus item. Select members got either a Vitabath Fragrance Mist or a Boots No 7 Beautiful Skin. I really wish I would’ve gotten the latter, I’ve been dying to try that line. I guess I’ll just have to splurge and buy some of the products. Thankfully that line is available at Target!

Here is my super cute miniature candle, the box also included a $10 coupon on a 3 wick Bath & Body Works candle, but since I’ve already done all of my candle shopping for the season, I think I am going to hold off on that one! Let me know if you want that coupon and I’ll mail it to you!

Another thing that I have tried out of the box, and probably what I was most excited for was this NYC palette, which includes 4 eyeshadows (2 matte, 2 shimmer), a primer and a creamy illuminator. I used it to do my makeup on Friday!

I have also tried the EBOOST powder, mixed it with my water and drank it last night! That thing fizzes up!

I don’t think I’ll be purchasing this anytime soon, because a box of 20 pouches (single servings) is $28! Airborne serves the same purpose, and is much more affordable! If you are looking for a good Airborne knock-off try CVS brand, I’ve tried that and Target brand and I can definitely say that CVS is much closer to the real thing than Target!

And finally there is a 1.5 oz tube of Not Your Mother’s Smooth Moves Frizz Control Hair Cream, Kiss Ever Pro Lashes Starter Kit and Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin – I will dedicate separate posts to those two products, though I am kind of skeptical about the pins, maybe it’s the fact that I have rather fine hair :)

So there you have it, my Beauty Blogger VoxBox 2012! Did you get a box? What was in it? What do you like or dislike about it? Do tell!

TAG: My Weird Beauty Habits

Hey everyone, how are you? Out of all the possible posts that I can do today, I decided to do this one, and the fact that it’s 4 am and I am awake, speaks for itself! So please forgive me if this post gets a little bit weird, and my mind starts drifting away.

Alright, weird beauty habit number one: I usually wake up in the middle of the night, right around 3.30 am, like today and go get a drink of water, then of course I go check out my face in the mirror, because I want to see if the beauty sleep is working. Does it work when interrupted though? I guess not, anyways that’s when I put more moisturizer on my face, because I feel like my skin is too dry, and for good measure I put some moisturizer around my eyes too! This is what I currently use for my middle of the night beauty routine:

Weird beauty habit number two is more like a confession – I love samples, and small travel sizes of, well of everything! I have about 6 small containers in addition to full size products on my cabinet, some of it is Estee Lauder, some of it is Bobbi Brown, I don’t care what it is, as long as it’s coming in a cute packaging and preferably free :) I am also a sucker for shampoo and conditioner combos. I think I have enough to last me through the next three months without having to buy anything full size, which I am planning on doing. And just yesterday I sat down behind this exact computer, went on my favorite Sweet Free Stuff and got 3 more shampoo/conditioner combos mailed to me. I also love Aveda samples, that come in those cute little boxes – best thing ever! I think I’ll go get some of those tomorrow!

My weird beauty habit number three started at work one day, when I was complaining that my hair was too greasy and I needed to go get some dry shampoo. That’s when I was told that Beautiful body powder from Estee Lauder works just like that and even better. So that’s what I’ve been using ever since. Now if you ever come see me at work and notice pink powder on my clothes, know that it’s my wonderful hair emergency go to!

And this is what I use at home:

Which leads to weird beauty habit number four: I love freecycling beauty products. That’s where Wind Song Body powder in the picture above came from, it was also brand new, and if anyone wants to know it’s $25 on ebay, I just checked :) And yes freecycle is a hit or miss, but a lot of times it’s the latter. I got a huge box of body washes, lotions, etc. about a month ago. Love it, won’t need to buy a body wash or a body spray for the next two years now! Here is a tip though – always check for expiration date, and if there isn’t one – then smell it, if it smells funny, recycle it. I love recycling my old skin care/make up/beauty packages at the Origins counter, they have bins there, so check your local stores!

And my fifth and last weird beauty habit that I can think of for today is actually a weird beauty routine that I do when I work out! Here is what I do:

- Put apple cider vinegar mixed with water and lavender or rosemary essential oils on my hair roots, and scalp,

- then I put coconut oil on my ends, which of course means I am putting coconut oil all over my hair ;)

- pull it all in a bun, go run 2 miles or so,

- all this while doing laundry!

Yup I am that good at multitasking :)

(There is a very small workout room in our building right next to the laundry room, so I am kind of killing two birds with one stone, three depending on how you look at it :) )

Okay now that you’ve read this post, you’ve all been tagged, so write your own post like that, or simply leave me a comment, I am dying to hear what everyone’s weird beauty habits are :)

And don’t do what I do, don’t write a blog at 4 am :) It’s already 4.40 now, I got side tracked looking up stuff on freecycle :)

Lots of love,

Zhenya

Product Review: Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner

A couple weeks ago I got a Summer Beauty VoxBox from Influenster. You can read a detailed post on what was inside the box here.

And two of the products that I got were the Clear Scalp and Hair Therapy shampoo and conditioner:

They are larger than travel or most hotel sizes, but smaller than the regular size shampoo and conditioner bottles. I don’t know if you can tell from the picture, but they are 3 oz each. That’s why they only lasted me 2 weeks, plus all of my intensive workouts, and washing my hair practically every day (which I hate and try not to do).

Another sad part is that I always run out of conditioner faster than shampoo, that’s why I like having masks and other 3-5 minute treatments handy, that way I can actually use them instead, and make the conditioner last longer. Interestingly enough, my husband is the exact opposite.

Now, what do these products promise us?

“Nourishment, strong beautiful hair, ten vitamins and nutrients, stronger, more beautiful hair in 7 days, less breakage when combing vs. non-conditioning shampoo.”

Unfortunately the 10 vitamins and nutrients are nowhere to be listed, but there is a heck of a lot of acids and sulfates in the ingredients, and coconut oil somewhere at the end of the list:

1. Ingredient list for shampoo

2. Ingredient list for conditioner:

Almost scary looking, aren’t they now?

Since I’ve been using these products for 2 weeks now, I feel like I can share my opinion and experience. So let’s go through the basics:

Smell: Some artificial, very chemical scent, reminds of the smell of Dove, but since it’s all produced by Unilever,F that’s not very surprising. The shampoo and conditioner both smell the same. I am sure other products from this brand smell the same, kind of like Garnier’s Fructis. I am not a huge fan of the smell, it’s not as strong when you put it in your hair though.

Look: Unfortunately I am so out of these products, I couldn’t even get anything out of the bottles to show you, but shampoo and conditioner both look pretty much the same, there is obvious shimmer added to the first one, and the conditioner just has a thicker texture.

Feel: The shampoo is pretty nice, lathers up well, gets coconut oil out of my hair in one wash (I put coconut oil in my hair in the mornings when I run on the treadmill, just as a conditioner) which is definitely a plus. Conditioner doesn’t really do it for my ends, if anything, it made them even drier. So I am not overly excited about that.

Overall I wasn’t necessarily impressed with this combo, it was nice to get the smaller sample sizes of it for free, to see how I would like them, and well, the truth is – I am going to stick to my organic, SLS free products, because they don’t dry and frizz out my hair, have a proper list of ingredients, no harsh chemical scents, and are eco friendly.

Have you tried any of the Clear products? If so, please share your opinion :)

xo,

Zhenya
