September Grunge

Reflections, and maybe thought about the past have been on my mind a lot. September is always a hard month for me, with my Grandpa passing away last year, and me not being there, like I was for my Grandma, I get emotional and feel incomplete.

Maybe that’s why I more than feel the grunge trend of the 90’s? It makes me feel closer to home, closer to my childhood.

It was 11 years ago in September that I started college, and now I am at it again! Dejavu is stronger than ever!

September, I am glad you are almost over.

More of the grunge trend below! Check out my favorite plaid sweaters and moto/combat footwear.

Oversized Coat Trend 2014

The oversized coat trend is one of my favorites this fall! Nothing like a soft feel of a coat to make you cozy and warm on a chilly autumn day. It’s the Snuggie of the fashion world.

#EnvisionMPLS Fall 2014

With MN fashion week in full swing, I absolutely had to post about Envision. It took place last Friday and once again was held at the Orchestra Hall, which, if you ask me, is a perfect venue for this event! It started with an inspiration message from Tricia Khutoretsky who reminded everyone present that “We are not New York, we are not Miami, we are Minneapolis…”

Once again the show was a mix of local designer looks and local boutiques.  The opportunity and ability to see what’ was on the runway is definitely a plus. Aldo provided all the footwear, and Tess + Tricia accessories were a pleasant surprise.

It was interesting to see what the designers came up with, the show was new and different and much better than the spring Envision. No blasts from the past on the runway this time!

Knits by Mary Pranica kicked off the show, and, being especially passionate about that craft I was really excited to see the collection!

Cocoon by Elizabeth Geisler had a couple great coats, mostly along the oversized, blanket coat trend line.

Velvet moon was very boho, but very dark at the same time. The Black and white dress that you first see in the video was definitely a favorite of mine.

Kjurek and plaid went hand in hand. Why do I always think of coffee when I see Kjurek? ;) But that last oversized flannel coat is everything!

Cliche put a nice 90’s spin on their collection, one of the models walking down the runway could barely hold in her laughter.

Ellie Hottinger had amazing oversized pieces that if I had a choice, I’d wear every day, because comfort > style in my college book these days.

And then Samantha Rei’s IsabelleEtColette appeared on the runway. I have to admit, I’ve been following the creation of Samantha’s collection on Instagram and Facebook, and the whole idea of the Fox and the Sparrow, the post cards, the story telling. Samantha, you should write a book. For a designer to go practically broke, but finish a collection, you are amazing and inspiring.

Lindsey Hopkins played with neoprene and Japan inspired theme in her collection. Made me regret giving up my neoprene skirt!

Emily Trevor’s collection reminded me of a vintage Haut Coutire Dior dress that I recently saw in one of my classes. Even though it seemed heavy, it was incredibly well thought through.

George Moskal was someone whose collection I was really looking forward to seeing. He hasn’t shown any of his designs for a while, so him coming back was a needed change.

I immensely enjoyed Envision, seeing old friends and meeting new ones, or meeting people I’ve met on social media, and putting avatars to faces or faces to avatars.

As far as my look – it was all thrifted. After the show I knew I couldn’t make it back to the car in my wedges, so I took them off and walked barefoot through Loring Park, planning on using my shoes for self-defense, which, luckily for me was unnecessary.

Enjoy the looks, let me know what you think, and don’t forget to go visit Josi and Austin at 1008 Marquette Ave.

Gina + Will Goodwill

ginapluswill

Last Friday night I finally made it to the new thrift store Gina + Will in Dinkytown. Operated by Goodwill Easter Seals MN it is an experimental store targeted towards young people and students. Located at 1324 5th St SE, Minneapolis it’s right across the street from Target Express and is very easy to find.

I got there around 7 pm and the place was busy! There was music, DJ, food and refreshments, and of course so many styles to choose from.

It was also a great chance for me to snap a few pictures of some outfits that made it on the Ustyle tumblr page!

What to shop Gina + Will for?

Fall apparel – sweaters, jackets, boots – it’s all there and the selection is great.

Bottoms – jeans, skirts, slacks, sweatpants (if you wish) can also be found in a large variety of styles and sizes.

Specialty racks – Gina + Will loves black and white was one of them last week, and I snagged two amazing items off of that rack!

Go there for the school spirit wear (and other local teams too ;) ) – get that Goldie on your shirt for cheaper than anywhere else!

Have you visited Gina + Will Goodwill? What did you think?

One of my finds was this white Talbots pleated skirt. You will be seeing a lot of it this fall, trust me!

Draw My Life

Hey everyone, I made this Draw my Life video as an introduction for my Creative Problem Solving class this semester and I thought it would be fun to share it with you! Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Back to school is easy when you are actually going to school, which in my case, I am. Classes started on Tuesday, and so far I am beyond excited and ready for action. We’ll see how long that lasts. I do have my Duluth Trading Company bag to tag along with me though, it’s so big and functional, and I love the smell of it!

New York Fashion Week Started today, and I will be glued to my screen, you know it! The BCBGMaxAzria show I caught this am before class was amazing! Live shows are the best! I was planning on volunteering at this Fashion Week, but school started and I don’t think it would’ve been a good idea to skip out on a whole bunch of classes. Maybe next semester? ;) And just like I did recaps in the spring, I will be doing them now. So come back later today! Check out other #ThriftStyleThursday posts on our FB page!

Instagram. Instablogging. Instablogger.

An interesting subject came up during one of our Twitter chats last night. Who is an Instablogger, and is it possible to be one?

While a lot of us have been using Instagram to compliment our blog, post previews of the posts to come, host giveaways, etc. Some people call themselves instabloggers, and have no other online presence other than Instagram.

Who is an instablogger and should you become one?

If you already have a blog that’s connected to your Instagram account, bad luck. You can’t qualify for that position. But if you are an active Instagram user, who also likes going somewhat deep in the comments section before inserting all the hashtags, instablogging may be for you.

But let’s take a step back and think how Instagram has changed the blogging scene.

More and more likes and comments appear on Instagram vs the actual blog.

We spend more time looking at the Insta feed than our blog feed.

There are bloggers I only follow on Instagram and Twitter, but don’t read their actual blogs.

Now is all this bad? No! I have said it before and I will say it again, there is room for everyone on the Internet. There are no limits as to where and how much you can upload, but also no limits to your potential! Be creative, be inventive, be original. And maybe one day I’ll see your photo on the popular tab.

Now a lot of you are maybe wondering how to become popular on Instagram. If popularity is what you are after, think about a theme for your feed. Just like a blog has a niche, a feed can have a theme. For example, Mavatar’s instagram only consists of black and white photos. Chelsea of zipped blog edits all of her pictures in Afterlight. Hackwith design’s photos are very neutral, done in mostly whites, greys and beiges, with some green and white in between.

Think about the feeds that you like, why do you like them? Are there feeds that you don’t like?

I have a very hard time following feeds that feature babies, pets, parties, alcohol, bauble necklaces, and a few other things. I will be honest, I don’t follow such feeds, and if they do post anything along those lines, I unfollow. Is it wrong of me? Well if that’s something I or you don’t want to see, why subscribe or follow that person?

So back to insta-blogging… I personally think Instagram is a great tool to drive traffic to your website, online or actual store. But is insta-blogging going to replace regular blogging? Even if you take all the clickable and affiliate links into consideration, it won’t.

As long as Instagram doesn’t go down the FB way with the amount of followers an individual can pay for, I am okay with it.

September

September-Inspiration

Right before my first class starts this semester, I am thinking about this quote, about the words of Maryl Streep that have been floating around the internet for the past few hours. I am sure you have already seen them.

“I no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me. I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience.” – Meryl Streep

And when there are of course many life applications to those, think of her words from a blogger perspective.

How many times do we leave a comment on someones post in hopes that they will in return go to our blog?

How many times have we asked for #followforfollow or joined a link up party?

How many relationships have we built, but how many have we destroyed?

Are our priorities as bloggers straight, or are we willing to sell our soul for a free dress or shirt, or a pair of shoes?

Have we been focusing on the real world or the one online, and how honest have we been with each other and with ourselves?

Happy September!

iMyne Shop Your Heart Out + Giveaway

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post, all opinions are my own.
iMyne

I have recently recently been introduced to iMyne. With bloggers promoting online shopping in every post and collecting commission on every item sold, I thought it would be good to post about something different for a change. Something that we can all do to bring change.

2014-08-28 13.39.15

I always get inspired to style and shop when I am reading the latest issue of a favorite fashion magazine, so I did a little research on iMyne.

iMyne is a community of shoppers changing the world, just by buying from sites they already love. Many of the retailers you know and love offer money back as an incentive to shop their sites, but these incentives are rarely cashed in. iMyne works with these sites to send those savings back to you—and your favorite cause. It’s automatic and ongoing and you donate without a penny out of pocket. And, the more people in your iMyne community, the more money you earn and give. It’s easy and simple; safe and secure. It’s not cash-back, it’s cash-forward. Simply shop, earn and give.

shopiMyne

Turns out iMyne is an easy way to donate to the charity of your choice (I picked Hera Women’s Cancer Foundation in memory of my Grandma who died from cancer 3.5 years ago), and earn some cash back. Simply download and install iMyne into your browser, you will see an iMy icon appear, and click to activate it every time you shop.

Here is the list of retailers and what percentage you can give to your charity by purchasing there. And here is how iMyne compares to other similar websites:
