My friend Jameson of Lessons with Coffee is having a garage sale this weekend. It’s absolutely amazing! shopped it last night and had a blast. Honestly this post wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for that garage sale.

I bought the metallic Ann Taylor skirt, and the vintage pink top I am wearing in the first look there (among other things  of course!)

I’ve also noticed the tendency to post two looks on Thrift Style Thursdays. It might be a coincidence, but let me know if you like it, and I’ll keep styling one item in different ways.

Also, exciting news Thrift Style Thursday now has it’s own Facebook page! So join in!

Happy weekend early everyone! I am off to Colorado tomorrow! Yay road trip!

Some of you may know that yesterday was my Birthday. And, just like that I got myself a pair of Frye boots. I can’t say I always wanted ones, and have been dying to get my hands on them, but at the right place and the right time, well, now I own a pair. And just like that, they walk me now.

Hope you all had a great day!

Love, have fun and Frye!

Urban Gothic

Happy Thursday! Today I put together two gothic inspired outfits for you. One is more precessional and office appropriate, while the second one is sassy and meant for parties, going out and dancing! Both of the outfits feature the same Elle brand dress I got from Megan of Two Birds at our Minneapolis Blogger Sale. Two pairs of shoes: Rampage Heels and Naturalizer flats that I am wearing were given to me by my coworker. I am wearing my husband’s old Timex watch. So the only things that I actually spend my money on were the purses: 3.1 Philip Lim for Target is the large tote bag that I feature a lot in my outfits, and my brand new Rebecca Minkoff mini bag that I got as a Birthday gift for myself from Shopbop.

Enjoy!

Summer makes me want to wake up early and stay up late. Summer makes me not want to go to work. Summer is when I wake up and after my morning routine of oil pulling and cup of coffee I sit down and start looking for inspiration. Sometimes it’s in the sun I see rising through the trees on Rhode Island avenue. Sometimes it’s in my herb garden that I have managed to keep alive. Sometimes summer is in the morning breeze and I need a blanket to cover my legs, and a husband’s sweatshirt to wear, because it’s still chilly. Summer flows into me, and I get dressed and get ready for the day. Tops, and tanks, and accessories, everything is there, and everything expresses who I am.

My Last Name

yellow-dress-chambray-shirt

Having been married for almost 3 years now, it surprises me how I am so used to my last name now. When I was little my mother always told me: “Don’t change your last name when you get married”. I guess she was afraid I’d end up with some ridiculous Russian last name. But having been in the States for 2 years with my maiden name, which was Demidova by the way, and having had to spell it to anyone and everyone, I knew that when I was going to marry Sam, I’d take his last name. Of course then he was making fun of me too, because he thought the whole name would sound ridiculous. If you are at all familiar with Russian names, you may know that we have a patronymic name, our dads name embedded into our own, and Zhenya (Evgenia) Igorevna Hutson just made Sam laugh. The truth of the story is though, I wanted to get rid of my patronymic name as well. So here I am Zhenya Hutson, loving it and loving my new (-ish) last name. In fact, I even had O’necklace make me a personalized last name necklace. So now, the world knows. And when I go to the U, just call me Hutson.

Twin Cities Travlin’: MIA and Lyndale Rose Gardens

discover-twin-cities

Welcome to Twin Cities Travels. Brought to you by Jameson of Lessons with Coffee and yours truly. Today’s post will be a two in one! Our first Twin Cities Tuesday was spent at MIA (Minneapolis Institute of Art - 2400 3rd Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55404), and last week we went to Lyndale Rose Gardens.

Originally, Jameson and I were going to simply hang out, but then thought, why not blog about it? So here we go!

Minneapolis Institute of Art has been one of those places I’ve never been to. Can you believe it? I still can’t to be completely honest. And since it’s a donation based admission (FREE!) I didn’t have to think about it twice.

We grabbed some coffee at Spyhouse on Nicolette Ave (Spy Girl is my current favorite) and walked over to MIA. The neighborhood it’s located in is a sight in itself, from the brownstones, to the carousel horse fence, to the zebra hiding in the bushes. I felt like a tourist in my own city.

I discovered Lyndale Rose Gardens last year right on my Birthday, when Sam and I were walking around Lake Harriet. And I knew I wanted to go back there. I was also extremely interested in seeing Peace (Rock) Garden. And since I almost always have to stand out, I had to wear a “new” dress I got from Minneapolis Blogger Sale, which I thought was perfect, and if you follow me on Instagram, you know that I make hiking in a dress look as easy as 1-2-3!

We also made origami paper cranes, also known as peace cranes. I carry mine in my wallet now, I am not sure about peace, but it definitely makes me happy.

And we now have our very own #tct water bottles, that Jameson made. This week I am working on a little DIY as well.

Natural Neons {Thrift Style Thursday}

neon-shirt-denim-shorts

The song “Peache” by The Presidents of the United States of America has been stuck in my head for the past month or so. Maybe because this small one farm farmers market by my house sells, among other things, well peaches. But we are going to talk neons today. I’ve never owned anything neon, until last Saturday, when after our Minneapolis Blogger Sale Nora let me have this shirt. And I fell in love. I hope you do too! Because neons are spectacular and can look very natural in an outfit.

St. Jude Theater of Dreams

the-wiz-stages-theater

Last Thursday I was able to ditch work early to head over to Stage theater in downtown Hopkins to attend St Jude Theater of Dreams. And of course I have a funny story to tell. I was planning on changing into a different dress for the night, but as I was putting it on in the bathroom, the zipper split. So on the verge of nervous breakdown, and fear of being late, I got into my husband’s car and he dropped me off at the event. I ended up changing back into the first dress I was wearing all day. And the dress with the broken zipper? I am planning on refashioning it into a skirt!

The night was great. Celebration of the 3rd annual St. Jude Theater of Dreams started with a Gourmet Pizza Party, premier of The Wiz, and Sweets Reception in the end. There was also an icee truck that I might have taken advantage of ;)

st-jude-theater-of-dreams st-jude-theater-of-dreams st-jude-theater-of-dreams

But above all that St. Jude is here to help families with kids who are fighting cancer. And they are doing a wonderful job. The care, the attention, everything that the families get, is free. There are no thousand dollar invoices, there are no insurance claims. It’s just kids being treated and getting well. That’s what St Jude is all about.

As for The Wiz and Stgaes theater – I loved it, every single bit of it. I feel like it’s one of those stories that keeps coming back over and over again, with the Wicked, and Once Upon a Time, and it should, because it reminds us to believe in ourselves and value what’s really important in life.

My Summer Look: Pretty Nails, Pretty Legs

Disclosure: I am a member of the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community.  This #MySummerLook shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for #CollectiveBias and its advertiser. my-summer-look It’s easy to lose yourself in the busy season known as summer. After a 6 month long winter here in Minnesota, summers are full of fun, plans, and almost no time to myself. But it’s still important to keep it pretty! Pretty nails, pretty hair, pretty legs! If you follow me on Instagram you probably know that I just got another balayage! The second one turned out even better than the first. So now that I got my hair taken care of, I decided to spend sometime on my legs and nails. When it comes to buying beauty products, Target is my top choice. Living in Minnesota has it’s perks. Target is everywhere, and it’s so conveniently located, that I can walk there, when the weather is nice (which is also dangerous ;) ). I love the beauty stands there, they are always so original and well put together, that I can get all my products in one place. target-summer-look-products   So after another successful trip to Target, I spent some me time on my deck, painting my nails, listening to Spotify and drawing inspiration from fashion magazines. This summer one of my goals is mastering nail art, and Sally Hansen products, especially their nail art kit, are perfect for that. I picked a lot of “nature” colors this time. Greens, blues, maybe because they reflect how I feel, or maybe because I want to be closer to nature, create a simple, easy look. summer-nail-trends summer-passtime And then I simply enjoyed my “me-time”, browsed social media, sipping my citrus water. how-to-be-skinny minneapolis-fashion-blogger And of course I didn’t leave the store without my favorite sunscreen products. I once got a sunburn canoeing. Can you guess where the sunburn was? On the back of my legs! Because out of all the places, I didn’t put it on there. And when sun reflected off of the canoe bottom, it burnt me pretty bed. So never again, thought I. Sunscreen has been a major essential since then. Between sailing, and being outside for work with the kids, I go through sunscreen every 2-4 weeks, and the regular kind just doesn’t do. I like the moisturizing kind, the one that leaves my legs feeling soft and smelling good. While the spray comes in very handy on the boat.

And finally I have some great news for you! There is an Instagram contest with $2,250 in Target gift cards to help you get your summer ready look. Look for the #MySummerLook hashtag and follow the conversation. How to enter (June 26, 2014 at 12:00 AM (midnight) Eastern Time (“ET”) and ends on July 10, 2014 at 11:59:59 PM ET):

  • 1) SNAP – take a picture of you getting summer ready
  • 2) TAG – use #MySummerLook (and on Twitter @SummerReadyLook)
  • 3) POST – post to Instagram or Twitter

Good luck, and don’t forget to tell me what’s your summer look like?
