Art, Fashion and What in the World did I go to Chicago for?

2013-05-05 15.37.58

As you know I just got back from Chicago, but not all of you know what I was doing there!

You might have also noticed this badge on my sidebar:

So here goes:

I was contacted by Verizon Wireless to participate in their Fashion and Style Blogger program a couple weeks ago, and at first it seemed too good to be true! They offered to fly me to Chicago, pay for my hotel, take me out to SAIC Fashion show and a dinner at a hip restaurant, get a chance to meet other bloggers, and have fun!

And to top it all off I was also given a new device to play with.

Needless to say I agreed to come even before I asked for that day off at work ;)

The device turned out to be a Samsung Galaxy Camera that comes with 4G LTE, a touch screen, a 21x optical zoom and a whole bunch of other perks (which I am going to talk about in one of my later posts), plus you can upload photos and videos directly to your social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube), it’s packed with editing apps, which definitely saves a lot of time! The only thing that it can’t do is make calls. And the funny thing is, Sam and I were at Best Buy the weekend before looking at that exact camera! So now my camera dilemma is solved and my husband won’t have to listen to me whining. Though he will be definitely taking more pictures for sure!

But I think I am going to stop talking now, and show you what the camera can do!

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Style Voices program and have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.

Christmas Tag!

I was tagged to do this Christmas tag by Luchessa! Thank you, dear, for tagging me! Here we go:
images-2

1. Which  Holiday do you celebrate? Christmas, and then Russian Christmas (January 7th!), just because one Christmas is never enough! There was also a time in my life when I celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas!

2. What are you doing for the holidays this year? Going to Wisconsin! Enough said!

3. What’s your favorite holiday drink? Anything caffeinated with peppermint in it, preferably from Starbucks ;)

paperless-cards-feel-better-tree-christmas-ecards-someecards

4. Candy Cane or Gingerbread men? I was going to say neither, but definitely Gingerbread men as I think more about the question. They are easier to chew :)

5. What’s your favorite Holiday/Christmas song? At work – All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth!

But the one that really get’s me in the spirit of Christmas is – Oh Come all Ye Faithful

6. What’s the weirdest gift you’ve ever received? Someone once gave Sam and me a Christmas ornament that said “Our First Christmas 2010″, we got married in 2011, and the people who gave it to us came to our wedding! So I think it was a re-gift.

7. Have you ever made a snowman? Yes, many times! I think growing up in Russia it’s a winter MUST! I also made a miniature one last year for a girl I used to babysit!

8. What is your favorite winter fragrance? Definitely Miss Dior

9. What is at the top of your list this Christmas? Sewing books I posted about a couple days ago!

10. What is most important to you about holidays? Spending DRAMA-FREE time with my family!

I am going to tag all of you my lovely readers to answer all of the questions, and I’d really like to tag the following bloggers:

Styling Vintage Thrift Finds for a day at the Stone Arch Festival

You all have seen my thrift finds from Goodwill Outlet, and today I am going to share how I styled one of the vintage pieces, that polka dotted “Lady Manhattan” top.

It wasn’t hard to do really – I threw on some shorts a pair of sandals, grabbed my vintage thrifted COACH bag and I was out of the door :)

On our way to Stone Arch Bridge Festival I spotted this odd number, I think she wanted to share her outfit with you all too!

Now If you didn’t know the Festival is free and open to public, there are a lot of arts and crafts booths, 3 stages with live music, and of course millions of food trucks!

And of course vintage cars:

Total Pin-Up:

This guy was making wooden bowls using a rope! How awesome is that!

I also found some awesome jewelry that I liked:

And some pretty cheesy garden accessories, too bad I don’t have a garden!

These were the most original wind chimes I’ve ever seen:

I also contributed to a painting, which is going to be hung at the Tuggs Tavern:

Here is Sam and I, aren’t we cute?

And here is another person I dragged outdoors with us that day – Blake – and yes, he is eating frozen yogurt and it was good!

Hope you had a good weekend!

Art-A-Whirl 2012, Minneapolis, MN

I know you all probably thing that all I do over the weekends is go to different art exhibitions and fairs, well I have been for the past 3 Sundays, simply because I’ve been getting Sundays off at work!

Today’s post is going to be about Art-A-Whirl, that takes place every year in North East Minneapolis. I’ve never been to that part of town before (shame on me I know!) It’s a pretty awesome area that became a home to a lot of immigrants from Poland and Germany. That’s where the famous polish store Kramarczuk’s is located! I’ve been to the store, no further!

There are also a couple Russian Orthodox churches I believe, but since I am not orthodox, I wasn’t really interested in going there. Maybe some other time.

Since Art-A-Whirl doesn’t take place in one building, we drove around quiet a lot that day! I am going to post pictures in chronological order, as we went from building to building!

But we’ll start with a map:

If you speak Russian, you’ll find the name of this band just as funny, as I did!

Jarmo Koponen

Randy Walker

Ice globes for your garden

Emily Dyer

Lucy Grantz

Michael Birawer

(Sam and I actually bought a poster of one of his paintings)

Brickmania

I just thought this was a very cool desk :)

Those huge lego blocks were actually for sale! Any takers?

I hope you enjoyed our little trip, here is a video re-cap of the events. I also apologize for not mentioning the names of all artists, there were so many, I couldn’t possibly remember them all! But if you know that the above pics show your work, please leave me a comment and I’ll correct that!

Have a great day everyone!

artOPENer2012 or a day in life of a blogger

I don’t always blog, sometimes I forget, sometimes I have nothing to blog about, but when I have something to blog about, I usually don’t have time :) Murphy’s Law, I know!

Last week I was so excited to get 2 days in a row, and I am going to dedicate a post to each of those days! But we are going to take it one day at a time!

Sunday, May 6, we all went to 2012 artOPENer:

But before we got to see some of these amazing pieces, we had lunch at Culvers:

Talk about healthy, right?

My in-laws :)

They take turns smiling!

And Sam and I don’t :)

On the way to our first stop we passed by a mail box:

A prison:

And a cemetery:

Isn’t that pretty? Too much forest for me though :)

Finally we got there and that’s what we saw:

Oh wait…

Here we go!

Another cemetery, this time it’s for skateboards, hmmm…

Ah! Finally, some pottery!

Oh and the chair picture that I am sure everyone has already seen ;)

I found this weird guy in the garden too, I can’t remember his name though :/

And finally the actual studio and the artist at work!

This bowl took her less than 5 minutes!

Hey look, there is more!

Next stop – Hudson, Wisconsin!

And St. Croix Gallery:

I want this at my house! NOT

More stuff:

Up next – the Casanova Glass Studio!

I didn’t really take a lot of pictures there, most of the pieces were unfinished, but it was a cool experience nevertheless!

And last but not least (to be honest, my personal favorite) – Melissa’s Studio D’Art

Up up the steps…

Thank you for joining us on this fun trip, let me know which of these places you liked the most, and definitely let me know if you actually visited them!

xoxo,

Z

The Love of Freebies

Oh Consumerism!

Alright everyone, let’s be honest, we all love free stuff. I know I do! There is a very good word in Russian that describes it – халява (read “halyava” or basically swag/freebies).

There are different kinds of swag, there are freebies that you get for running marathons (like mugs or T-shirts), but if you come to think of it, those aren’t really free, because you paid a fee to run the marathon in the first place.

Then there are samples (some people call them testers, I have no idea why, because those two words have totally different meanings). Samples sometimes come from a store, or you can get them in your mail. And samples are a good way to try put new products if you are serious about buying something. If you are like me, then you probably have a drawer full of shampoo/conditioner/body wash/lotion samples that are really hard to get rid of, because they just don’t end. Yes, maybe I am a sample hoarder, but at least I use them! I am working my way through all of those shampoo/conditioner samples that I’ve been receiving in the mail.

Then, there are samples that come with purchase, the so called Free Gift, and this is what I am going to tell you about. Actually I am going to tell you what not to do when getting Free Gift with purchase.

- If it says 1 per customer, it means 1 per customer. I don’t care if you are from China or California, it is 1 per customer. And if you think I don’t remember faces, oh you are so wrong! It’s all a game for me, after you’ve been coming to the counter 3 days in a row and purchasing the same thing every time! I also can’t imagine what you are going to do with 3 or 4 of those free gift bags? Donate them to Goodwill? How are you going to use up all the product?

- If there was another freebie in addition to the gift and you didn’t get it, don’t come asking for it for free, no one will give it to you. You can make another purchase, and we’ll all pretend we see each other for the first time. But do you realize how pathetic you look asking for that freebie? Especially if you start crying? So please don’t do that! There will be another free gift and more extra freebies.

- When you are nice, everyone else will be nice to you! No one cancelled “thank you”, just remember that!

- And finally, sales associates are there to help you, not to scare you away, so don’t be shy!

Finally, a couple days ago there was a “Beauty Bag” available on Target.com – and the ridiculousness of the situation and all the people who wanted to get it was rather comical. A lot of customers wrote on Target’s Facebook wall claiming there were problems receiving that beauty bag, but one comment stood out to me the most:

“Stop complaining that you can’t receive your samples! If you’ve been sitting refreshing your browser for the past hour trying to get the bag, you are probably a hoarder and have too many of those samples anyways!”

Kudos to the author of that message and good luck to you!

Xo,

Z

PS. There are usually free samples available at Target.com or Walmart.com. I also use mommysavesbig.com and sweetfreestuff.com! Good luck with your freebies!

Macy’s Flower Show Minneapolis

Today was my first full day at home after the surgery and I convinced Sam to go to the flower show with me :) It was amazing, and free :) And I was able to walk all the way there and back! Yay, what an accomplishment!

Here are some pics for you all! And if you live in the area, or somewhere where Macy’s has their flower show – I suggest go ASAP, because it’s going to be over on Saturday!

Thanks for stopping by everyone, and if you want to come say hi, I work at the Clinique counter in Macy’s in downtown Minneapolis 3-4 days a week :)

Cheers,

Z

Through the Eyes of a Commoner…

An exhibition about Princess Diana is currently being hosted at the largest mall in the US – the Mall of America. Luckily for me, I live about 30 minutes away from there and have friends who agreed to go there with me.

Diana herself is a fascinating figure, I remember watching a movie about her last summer while I was still in Russia. It was extremely touching, though I never really cried. I didn’t cry when she died either, back in 1997 I was only 11 year old.

The whole exhibition is divided into several parts, and it’s so difficult to choose items that stood out to me the most, so I am not even going to try. All I am going to say is – you need to go see it for yourself – and make sure when you are there to look for the prayer book given to Diana by Mother Teresa, that item alone radiates so much energy, that it’ll give you chills!

Cheers,

Z
