I got shot… with a camera!

Some exciting news are coming to BeingZhenya.com! But before I can spill the beans, I want to show you some exciting pictures I got taken of me by a photographer. It was all from waist up, so I am going to leave you guessing what they were for, but I’ve already updated my Facebook picture, as well as my Twitter icon, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t recognize me 🙂

Feathers Unruffled {A Home Decor Post}

I don’t normally post about home decor, unless it’s DIY, but this time I just wanted to share how something random, bought on a whim,, transformed my living room and made that one small part of it (aka my console table) complete.

1175093_10153247867590604_1927752555_n

I got these feathers a week ago at the Minnesota State Fair. They were only a $1 each at the International Bazaar (which does by the way have a Russian booth!) and I couldn’t simply pass by.

So after spending all afternoon wandering around the Fair Grounds with these feathers sticking out, I was amazed they actually made it home that night.

To be honest, I wasn’t going to put them in a vase. I did have a different spot for them in mind, but they never made it there!

Instead they were dropped off on the console table that I freecycled a couple years ago, next to these two frames, one being a cross stitch by my dear friend Tamara, reminding me where, when and who I married 😉 And the other is a picture version of the latter.

Once I sat down and actually looked over where the feathers were, I knew that it’s where they belonged.

So then the vase hunting began. From Target to TJ Maxx, to Marshall’s to finally – BINGO – a thrift store (this time it was Salvation Army) during a Labor Day sale, this beauty ended up costing me only $3.50 plus tax!

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner thought I…

Now to find the lamps…

Xx,

Z

PS. Check out these salt and pepper shakers Sam’s friend Blake brought me from England:

One of them is a London Guard and the other is The British Gentleman! Can you guess which one is which? LOL

DIY Vintage Doily Coffee Table Runner

I am back with a DIY Friday post! I hope you are as excited as I am! Because I am finally going to start showing bits and pieces of my new house!

20130830-174127.jpg
About a month ago I went to an estate left overs sale in Hopkins. It was organized by Empty the Nest, one of my favorite thrift/vintage household items resellers in the Twin Cities. I scored 2 large bags of stuff for $10 (it was a 5 dollar bag sale!)
And among my many many finds were these vintage doilies. So I decided to create a runner for my oval living room coffee table.

20130830-174235.jpg
First I laid everything out, and then stitched it together, using just a needle and a thread. I was originally going to use my sewing machine, but decided against it.

20130830-174334.jpg
I am really happy with the final result, and glad I waited so long to get the doilies. The living room is coming together and I’ll have another post for you soon (get ready for some peacocking 😉 )

Have a great Labor Day weekend! See you on Tuesday!

Remember this dress?

WP_20130804_009

It was my first refashion in the Refashion Runway project, and it was absolutely perfect for that weekend. The dress is American Apparel thrifted for $5 from the Hopkins Goodwill and still had the original tags 🙂

Today’s dress is brought to you by…
Just kidding!

My friend Miche of Buttons and Birdcages answered my call to join the 27 dresses project and I couldn’t be happier! She was with me on Refashion Runway, but I’ve actually been following her for a while!

Here is what the dress is all about:
“I actually found this dress at a thrift store for $1.99! It was a little big, and way too long but I figured those fixes should be easy enough given that it was already pretty cute to begin with. It turned out to be an amazing summer dress 🙂

So here you have it a perfect thrifted summer dress that simply needed to be altered! Doesn’t it look great?

Henna, now that’s a first!

As some of you may know I went up north to a friend’s cabin last weekend. But before I went I tried something I’ve never tried before – henna! Yes, I am 27 and have never tried henna tattoos before! I used to put henna in my hair back when I lived in Russia though! It’s a very good strengthening treatment for your hair!

So when one of my aids offered to stay after work and do it, I gladly entrusted myself into the hands of a 17 year old!

I got a sun inspired ornament on my left wrist and a peacock on my right calf

I thought Andrea did an absolutely marvelous job and I am so grateful she offered to do it after work and spend time hanging out with me, my husband, and a few of our other co-workers! It was a fun night!

I also found out what was in the henna mix, and why it smelt so good! I kept smelling my wrist for the rest of the day, even when we went to Target 😉

Plus I also learned how to take care of henna:

Have you done/tried anything new and exciting lately?

A friend in need is a friend in Indiegogo

A1 DIY Dork

Today I want to share some exciting news from a fellow blogger Sheri, from Awesome Sauce & Asshattery. She’s launched an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign to support the production of her 3 Crafty Nerd T-shirt designs: Sewing Geek, Knitting Nerd & Crochet Dweeb

She will be donating 10% of her funded total to Designer’s Against Aids! I personally think the Tees are pretty nifty and I would personally love to own all 3 of them! Which ones do you like best?

Vintage Leslie Fay dress refashion (PSST! What I really wore for the 4th of July!)

After we moved, I have come to realize how much vintage clothing I actually have. Unfortunately I couldn’t wear some of it, because it needed to be altered or refashioned! So I decided to start with this vintage Leslie Fay dress:

20130705-083611.jpg
I got it at Savers last fall, and never wore it because of the neckline, or should I say the lack of it 🙂 So, that collar was the first thing to go:

20130705-083735.jpg

20130705-083837.jpg
Then I cut a good chunk off the bottom, lets be honest, I still got some killer leg to show 😉

20130705-083959.jpg
I hemmed the raw edges using some vintage navy colored trim that I had, making this dress perfect for the 4th of July!
