2013-07-28 15.53.02 (1)

I will be honest with you, library is one of my favorite places to go to! It’s relaxing and inspiring for me at the same time! So I don’t think I am going to surprise you if I tell you that I dress up to go to the library! Well I dress up to go almost anywhere, even work 😉 and that’s how this project started!

Super Sad True Love Story

И на моем Nook я читаю “Игра Эндера”

Читали ли вы что-то из вышеперечисленного? Мне будет очень интересно ваше мнение!

See’s Candies Store Opening at Southdale Mall

SeesCollage1

There are two things that will make me go anywhere after a full 10 hour day of work – FREE and CHOCOLATE! And this is exactly what happened last Thursday at the See’s Candies Store opening at Southdale Mall. It was a Minnesota blogger event, so I got to see some of the old faces and meet some new bloggers as well, and of course Sam was my plus one 😉

2013-05-30 19.51.31

It was candy galore, I mean all sorts and kinds, and as it was mentioned later that night, one candy is a meal indeed!

SeesCollage2

See’s Candies was founded in 1921, and has been sticking to the 1920’s design ever since, from the black and white marble floor to the staff outfits!

SeesCollage3

An interesting fact about See’s one of the episodes of I Love Lucy was filmed there, check it out:

So we all got a chance to recreate our very own I love Lucy episode and pack a box of candy! Remember when Forrest Gump said – Life is like a box of chocolate? You never know what you get inside? Well I knew exactly what was going into that box! I didn’t know what was inside the chocolates, but that’s secondary 😉 And not to brag or anything, I was able to put 13 pieces of candy inside the box instead of 12!

SeesCollage4

And then to my surprise Sam goes for the hair net to pack his own box of candy!

SeesCollage5

A couple more interesting facts:

– See’s candies offers free samples all day every day!

– See’s candies also holds the Guinness World Record for the Largest Lollipop!

“The largest lollipop was 3176.5 kg (7,003 lb), and was created by See’s Candies (USA) at See’s Candies Lollypop Factory in Burlingame, California, USA, on 18 July 2012.

The lollipop was chocolate-flavored and had the following measurements: 4 feet 8.75 inches in length, 3 feet 6 inches in width, and 5 feet 11 inches in height. The lollipop also included a stick which was 11 feet 10 inches tall, though the weight of the stick did not count towards the record.”

And a few more photos to make your Monday sweeter!

It was great to see you all ladies! Aren’t we a lovely group? Minnesota Bloggers Represent 😉 2013-05-30 19.56.28
Thank you so much See’s Candies for organizing this fun event for us! KJ, you were amazing, I loved talking to you! And thank you for all the candy we got to bring home! You were so so generous!
I also want to give a special shout out to the  Southdale Sephora! You ladies topped my night off! Thank you for the wonderful conversation and the compliments on my dress!

It Can Wait Pledge! Take It With Me!

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Style Voices program and have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.

The subject of texting/calling/emailing when driving has been on my mind a lot lately. Rememeber the days when it was just texting? Now it’s emailing, facebooking, tweeting, instagramming… the list goes on and on! For people hooked on Social Networks like me, it’s a dangerous territory! And even though you might miss an important tweet, or text, nothing is as important as your life!

It all started with a book I read called Left Neglected by Lisa Genova. The first half of the book was a horror story to me, a horror story I couldn’t put down! I am not going to spoil it for anybody who hasn’t read it, but I think it should be on everyone’s Goodreads ASAP!

My husband and I carpool to work, and neither one of us are on our phones. The time in the car is almost sacred, that’s when we talk, when we share our plans for the day in the morning, and discuss what happened in the evening! One thing we do before we get into the car though is check the traffic, and unfortunately we often end up seeing car accidents. And every time it breaks my heart.

It Can Wait Pledge Logo

Now I am not going to be the goody two shoes and tell you that I’ve never texted while driving, or talked on my phone. I am human and guilty of that too! But the older I get, the more responsible I become, and today I want to share a pledge I have recently taken, called It Can Wait!

But let me show you these facts first:

So please take this pledge with me today. I would love to know if you did, so don’t forget to comment and remember that TOGETHER WE CAN DRIVE SAFE!!

You are Diamond!

Today my husband’s grandparents are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary! How awesome is that? 60 years with the same person! Sam also has his Grandpa’s wedding band, which is more meaningful to us than any words can describe!

So Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary Bob and Betty, and may the 5 o’clock gins continue for many many more years!

We love you,

Sam and Zhenya!

PS. The photo was taken on their wedding day (May 15, 1953), and is a curtesy of my mother in law!

HELP! Early stages of hoarding?

I think I have a problem!

Seriously! Look at these pictures:

– Closet space

And I know exactly what it is – I am lazy, I don’t like to clean, I don’t like to pick up, for some reason I want to save every scrap of paper, every ribbon, every magazine.

I keep telling myself that once we move into a house, it’ll get better, but who am I kidding – it won’t.

But nothing motivates me, I guess I am just a slob. And it’s the availability and accessibility of products here. I can go to a store, spend some money, get more stuff, but it won’t solve the clutter solution!

I have recently started an Etsy store, and one of the main reasons was to downsize my vintage collection. And yes, I have made some sales, but what’s 1-2 purses compared to a walk-in closet full of supplies, patterns, coats?

Yes, let’s talk about coats. I have an obsession with coats, I think I have about 10 of them! That’s the problem thrifters have – you walk into Savers or Goodwill and see an awesome coat say for $30, and of course you want to pick it up, because in your head you are already putting together outfits, and creating InstaCollages! And at this point you don’t realize that you have another dozen coats waiting to be worn, photographed, pinned, instagrammed, facebooked, etc.

Maybe I just need to vent, but I also function better, when more people know about my issue. I don’t need anyone to hold me accountable, I need to publicly tell everyone that modern day social networks are giving me an ADD, and that my real life is starting to go god knows where!

It’s a 1 bedroom apartment for crying out loud, how difficult could it be to clean?

So here you have it, I fessed up, and am now going to go and vigorously clean the apartment, making several trips to the dumpster!

Have a great day everyone,

Z

Laundry

Yes, this is a video about how I do laundry and yes, I don’t use the dryer!

ENJOY!

Have a great weekend,

Mad Men Style

Hubs and I went to a party on Saturday night, and the theme was Mad Men. I was so so excited to dress 60’s style, well you know how I am! I’m always looking for an excuse to look fancy, especially because I am stuck wearing a uniform of sorts for 5 days a week! A couple weeks ago I posted pics from my thrifting trip to Goodwill in Roseville, and that’s when the finds came in handy! And yes, I was specifically looking for something to wear to that party, and even though I’ve already spilled the beans in that post, here is how it all looked on me 🙂

And of course a picture of me in my favorite coat (SPOILER: I scored some awesome coats thrifting yesterday with Megan of Mr.C & Me and Lauren of Our Crazy Ever After – don’t forget to check out their blogs!)

So here is what the entire outfit came down to:

My cardigan (originally HWR) – $2.50

My dress (J.Crew) – $3.50

My necklace and earrings were a gift, I also brought my vintage Etra clutch ($3.99 at Salvation Army, but I got it over a year ago, sorry you can’t really see it in the pictures very well :/)

My coat is that Bitten brand by SJParker (around $30), that ceased to exist back in 2008 when Steve & Barry’s went out of business, and the shoes are from TJ Maxx ($20), I think these last two items were the most expensive ones, but keep in mind the fact that I’ve had this coat for 4 years, and shoes for 2!

And the scarf came from Goodwil Outlet, so I am pretty sure it cost under $1!

So there you have it, my $57 outfit!

I also wanted to give a shout out and mention Influenster one more time, I was able to pin my hair up with the Goody Spin Pins I got in my Blogger Vox Box. It was super fast and easy, and I will definitely use the spin pins again!

What did you wear this weekend?

Happy Monday everyone,

Z

Sunday Post: Stories from My Closet: Bitten Coat

When I first moved to Jersey in 2008, I was obsessed with Bitten, that brand by Sarah Jessica Parker, which only existed for a couple years, and was sold at Steve and Barry’s, which went under when the crisis hit.

I have a couple of Bitten items left, but the one I love the most is this houndstooth pattern coat:

This was my very first piece of outerwear that I accessorized, and it also got me hooked on Art Deco, and the whole 20’s theme, here is how…

It was one of those weekends when I took the train from Jersey to Penn Station, and after meeting up with one of my Russian girlfriends and taking about 20 pictures of the Flat Iron Building, which is my favorite one of all times:

we decided it was too cold to hang outside, and ended up on the corner of 5th Avenue and 42nd street:

So after going through the metal detector and the security bag check, we ended up in library/architecture/culture heaven:

But the best part of the whole experience was the Art Deco Exhibition,

that talked about the rich history, legacy and influences behind that movement. As we all know, a lot of good things come from France, so did all this!

Don’t you wish you could just put that same dress on and go walk around Central Park? I certainly do! I always get complimented on that coat, even when people say I look very Mary Tyler Moore, I just hope they refer to her younger years!

To be honest I don’t remember much from that whole day, just the feeling of excitement that I could go and be inside NYPL for the very first time in my life. I would go back there several more times, to see the original Winnie-the-Pooh toys and first edition of the book, to take kids I was babysitting to story time, to simply get some books, or to just take a break from walking around Manhattan all day…

I can’t wait for fall now, so that I can wear my Bitten coat again…

Art-A-Whirl 2012, Minneapolis, MN

I know you all probably thing that all I do over the weekends is go to different art exhibitions and fairs, well I have been for the past 3 Sundays, simply because I’ve been getting Sundays off at work!

Today’s post is going to be about Art-A-Whirl, that takes place every year in North East Minneapolis. I’ve never been to that part of town before (shame on me I know!) It’s a pretty awesome area that became a home to a lot of immigrants from Poland and Germany. That’s where the famous polish store Kramarczuk’s is located! I’ve been to the store, no further!

There are also a couple Russian Orthodox churches I believe, but since I am not orthodox, I wasn’t really interested in going there. Maybe some other time.

Since Art-A-Whirl doesn’t take place in one building, we drove around quiet a lot that day! I am going to post pictures in chronological order, as we went from building to building!

But we’ll start with a map:

If you speak Russian, you’ll find the name of this band just as funny, as I did!

Jarmo Koponen

Randy Walker

Ice globes for your garden

Emily Dyer

Lucy Grantz

Michael Birawer

(Sam and I actually bought a poster of one of his paintings)

Brickmania

I just thought this was a very cool desk 🙂

Those huge lego blocks were actually for sale! Any takers?

I hope you enjoyed our little trip, here is a video re-cap of the events. I also apologize for not mentioning the names of all artists, there were so many, I couldn’t possibly remember them all! But if you know that the above pics show your work, please leave me a comment and I’ll correct that!

Have a great day everyone!

The Love of Freebies

Oh Consumerism!

Alright everyone, let’s be honest, we all love free stuff. I know I do! There is a very good word in Russian that describes it – халява (read “halyava” or basically swag/freebies).

There are different kinds of swag, there are freebies that you get for running marathons (like mugs or T-shirts), but if you come to think of it, those aren’t really free, because you paid a fee to run the marathon in the first place.

Then there are samples (some people call them testers, I have no idea why, because those two words have totally different meanings). Samples sometimes come from a store, or you can get them in your mail. And samples are a good way to try put new products if you are serious about buying something. If you are like me, then you probably have a drawer full of shampoo/conditioner/body wash/lotion samples that are really hard to get rid of, because they just don’t end. Yes, maybe I am a sample hoarder, but at least I use them! I am working my way through all of those shampoo/conditioner samples that I’ve been receiving in the mail.

Then, there are samples that come with purchase, the so called Free Gift, and this is what I am going to tell you about. Actually I am going to tell you what not to do when getting Free Gift with purchase.

– If it says 1 per customer, it means 1 per customer. I don’t care if you are from China or California, it is 1 per customer. And if you think I don’t remember faces, oh you are so wrong! It’s all a game for me, after you’ve been coming to the counter 3 days in a row and purchasing the same thing every time! I also can’t imagine what you are going to do with 3 or 4 of those free gift bags? Donate them to Goodwill? How are you going to use up all the product?

– If there was another freebie in addition to the gift and you didn’t get it, don’t come asking for it for free, no one will give it to you. You can make another purchase, and we’ll all pretend we see each other for the first time. But do you realize how pathetic you look asking for that freebie? Especially if you start crying? So please don’t do that! There will be another free gift and more extra freebies.

– When you are nice, everyone else will be nice to you! No one cancelled “thank you”, just remember that!

– And finally, sales associates are there to help you, not to scare you away, so don’t be shy!

Finally, a couple days ago there was a “Beauty Bag” available on Target.com – and the ridiculousness of the situation and all the people who wanted to get it was rather comical. A lot of customers wrote on Target’s Facebook wall claiming there were problems receiving that beauty bag, but one comment stood out to me the most:

“Stop complaining that you can’t receive your samples! If you’ve been sitting refreshing your browser for the past hour trying to get the bag, you are probably a hoarder and have too many of those samples anyways!”

Kudos to the author of that message and good luck to you!

Xo,

Z

PS. There are usually free samples available at Target.com or Walmart.com. I also use mommysavesbig.com and sweetfreestuff.com! Good luck with your freebies!
