K is for Kimonos and Kaftans {A-Z Challenge}

kimono-inspired Kimonos-Kaftans

I am a little behind on my A to Z challenge, but here is letter K post. I am really excited about it, because I made it all about kimonos and kaftans (caftans). I know a few brave people who have actually worn those in real life, and looked amazing! I am hoping to be able to pull one off sometime this summer. But don’t you just love oriental inspired clothing?

C is for Chevron {A-Z Challenge}

chevron-dress chevron-pants chevron-shoes

Having already shared my love for Chambray with you last week, I decided to explore the beauty of chevron. I love this pattern on others, but haven’t been brave enough to try it out for myself. I have zero chevron items in my closet (I might have to take another look, but pretty sure there are none!), can you believe it?

I created a chevron themed collection in my favorite shopping app – Mavatar, and I hope you like my picks.

Do you wear chevron? Patterns?

Pink Midi

Carrie-Bradshaw-Inspired

This pink midi skirt reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw’s Oscar de la Renta dress circa Sex and the City season 6. She wore it out one night on a date with the Russian. And even though my skirt is nothing fancy, in fact it’s made of  neoprene, the material that screams anything, but fashionable to me, I feel like a million bucks in it.

I also wanted to talk about the shoes today, because without them my look wouldn’t have been complete. One of my coworkers has recently brought me 8 pairs of brand new shoes. She had a foot surgery and now, nothing really fits. But we do wear the same size. #Shoeblessing is exactly what I needed to help me go through this week. Work has been really hard, and stressful. But then there are all the new pairs. My one question now is – how do you store all the shoes? Especially if you have so many pairs? What about boots? Send me your ideas, I would love to make a Pinterest board!

Do you have a piece in your wardrobe that makes you feel special? What is it? Do you wear it often, or is it only for certain occasions?

Pastels

From prom dresses to NYFW runway, pastels have taken over trend lists on major fashion magazines, websites and blogs. I am no exception. And even though neutrals will always be my first love, pastels are now borderline obsession in my wardrobe and makeup bag at the moment.

Pastel-Coat-Outfit

Pastels-Trend-2014

I will be honest, the coat and the purse are not thrifted. I got the coat from SheInside.com through their blogger program and I immediately knew it would be perfect for this post. It did though come with two biggest ugliest black snaps that I’ve ever seen. Those were the first ones to go. Then I cut off the tag, no one would be able to read and sound out what the brand was called anyways. I never had much luck ordering from Chinese websites, even when it was sent to me for free. But this coat is a keeper. Though I am kind of anxious to see what’s going to happen to it in the wash.

My olive/beige purse came from Madewell store at the Mall of America. I popped in after Macy’s Prom Fashion Show, and just couldn’t leave without it. The bag is reversible, made out of vegan leather (and it’s actually Free People), and comes with an oversized clutch and a small key pouch. All that for $69 + tax. I was hooked.

Everything else is thrifted though. I promise.

Are you following trends? If so, what do you think of pastels? Are you incorporating them into your wardrobe?

Spring Casual {Thrift Style Thursday}

Casual-Spring-Look-Thrift-Style

Express jeans – thrifted, Converse – TJ Maxx, Pink Clutch – Clothes Mentor Minnetonka, Black top – thrifted, White sweater – thrifted, Floral scarf – thrifted, Black leather jacket – TJ Maxx

Thrift style is affordable, fun and unique. Today’s thrift style thursday is all about a casual, laid back look. And this is what you might spot me wearing on a warm (40F) spring day here in Minneapolis.

Even though spring is still far away from becoming a reality, the snow is melting, and so is my snow phobia. I am not kidding you guys, I thought I was being suffocated by snow banks. Backing out of the driveway was the most dangerous venture I’ve been on since college. And snow dams were nothing out of the ordinary. Plus I am still expecting mother nature (aka winter) to strike back!

Layering-for-spring-thrift-style

But I can literally smell spring coming, everything is melting, and my wardrobe is waiting in anticipation for the warmth. I love styling for spring, as much as I love styling for fall, even a little bit more. Spring to me means summer is just around the corner, and that’s sailing, beaches, friends, and fun.

Styling for spring can be a bit of a challenge though, and I do recommend sticking to layers, especially during those cold weeks of march/april. Here I have a black silk top, under a white silk sweater. My black leather jacket is another perfect spring accessory I am stealing from my fall wardrobe. I added the floral scarf for fun, and trends. Florals are always in.

The jeans, even though they look like boyfriends, are actually skinny, with some natural wear and tear. I rolled them up, because there is nothing wrong with showing off a bit of skin.

Finally bright bold accessories, like this neon pink clutch, and pink Converse are my must haves!

the-renegade-seamstress-burda-style-webinar

I am really happy to announce and support my friend’s Beth first live web seminar with BurdaStyle. Beth and I met through our blogs back in the day when I used to do a lot of refashions. She’s always been extremely supportive, always stopping by to comment and share her thoughts. She is so kind and optimistic, it radiates through her photos and refashion ideas.

So please join her on Monday, March 31 at 11:00 am EST for

Refashion: Inspiration and Projects to Revamp and Recycle Your Wardrobe

I know how excited Beth must be, and I hope you’ll join her for that online event. There will be loads of new inspiration and it promises to be lots of fun. I know she is planning this web seminar like she would be planning a party.

“It’ll be like we are next door neighbors hanging out for awhile. It’ll be like we’re going thrift shopping together and then working with each other to give new life to some secondhand clothes”.

Please head over to BurdaStyle to get more information and sign up.

I hope you had a great weekend and are not traumatized by a loss of 1 hour of sleep, because I know I am!

Peter Pilotto for Target – Scores and Looks

Peter-Pilotto-For-Target-Skirt

Target collaborations can be a hit or miss. But if you’ve been shopping them for a while, you know which ones to shop, and which ones to skip. Having set my alarm for 7.30 am the night before, I was seriously planning on being at the store in my pajamas by 8 am! (That’s what I did for the last collaboration – Philip Lim). And then the snooze button happened. To make the long story short, I didn’t make it to the store until after 4 pm. I’ll be honest, I expected to see a sad piece hanging all by itself on a rack, but, to my surprise, it was all there! Well, maybe not all of it, but a lot of it. Now, some of you know I am participating in the Thrifty Threads 365 challenge, so you are probably wondering why am I spending all this money in retail? There is a loop hole in our challenge, or an exception if you want to call it that. You are allowed to use gift cards. And that’s exactly what I did!

Today I am only going to show you the skirt. It was one piece I wasn’t sure about. Styling it can be challenging. But the pockets sold me! As you could probably guess, I am hoping to buy the top that goes with it, also seen on Diane Krueger, later when the collection goes on sale.

First of all the entire collection is mostly polyester, it’s made in China. Personally, the black, yellow, blue and white color palette was a little off. Less structured pieces, looked baggy and unflattering. I also wish that  when creating such collections, the designers would show us how to style pieces. Yes, it’s fun to be all dressed in Peter Pilotto, but?

What did you think of this collaboration? Did you buy anything? How are you styling it?

90′s Style: Plaid and Dr. Martens are Back!

2013-11-17 18.47.48 2013-11-17 18.48.14 2013-11-17 18.48.48 2013-11-17 18.49.15 2013-11-17 18.49.32

I am going to be honest with you, I can’t get enough of the Dr. Martens I thrifted. They are amazing! And since I told you a story from high school in my last post, I figured I’ll tell you another one from my past today! What can I say, I guess these shoes bring back the memories :)

I was in 7th grade when I discovered thrift stores. There was one big one in Vladimir (my home town), and everyone thought it was the new IT spot. I remember the first time I went there with my mom right before 9th grade. I got a lot of new T-shirts, some overalls (I wish I still had them to style this year :) ) , anyways…

After I got the hang of thrifting, I started wearing more and more new clothes to school. And of course other kids started noticing it. I had a friend in school, his name was Max, and I am pretty sure he knew what was going on, so every time I would wear something new, he’d joke around and say that I got humanitarian aid from the States.

Too bad you are not around anymore, Max…

Happy Tuesday and have a great day!

Styling 3.1 Philip Lim // Review

After bringing home a quiet extensive amount of Philip Lim’s collection for Target Sunday morning, my first thought was – I have to clean! I know you are probably thinking, you should’ve been celebrating, because you were one of the lucky happy shoppers. Yes, there were so many negative reviews and opinions, that I know were experience and not collection related, but I am not going to focus on that! So yes, I did clean, organized my clothes, threw out an idea for other Minnesota Bloggers to organize a Clothing Swap (let me know if you are interested)! Did laundry, laundry and more laundry. Went through my mail, my email, my magazines (most of which ended up in the recycling anyways!), cooked…

And finally, finally at about noon, I put some of it on! And loved it…

Boom Sweater – Philip Lim for Target, Green Button down – Philip Lim for Target, Mini Satchel in Taupe – Philip Lim for Target, Jeans – Express, Boots – Mossimo

Yesterday was an amazing, emotions filled day, I can’t even describe what a fashion collaboration hype can do to you! Was it worth it? I think so!

Me personal opinion on the bags is – they are good quality, very well made (unfortunately in China, but that’s where all of Target’s stuff comes from). The little metal hooks that attach the strap to the mini satchel are the only thing that look cheapish, but that’s just their color.  The mini satchel fits a large wallet, the front pocket is perfect for your iPhone. I tried putting my Nokia Lumia 928 in there, and that wouldn’t fit! Plus car keys, a small makeup bag or kit. I can definitely compare it to my vintage Coach cross body that you see in a lot of pictures when it comes to what it can fit!

Now for the clothes – I know a lot of people were complaining and saying that the clothes were poor quality, the stitching was off, etc. But the pieces that I got all look well made (for Target – and that’s the one thing I think people most often forget, that it’s TARGET! It’s not the same manufacturer who creates for the designer, and even if it is, well, they won’t be getting paid as much!) I absolutely love the Boom Sweater! It was one of the things that I really wanted, and couldn’t be happier to get! Can’t wait to style the skirt and the other bags for you!

Xx,

Z
