Product Review: Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner

A couple weeks ago I got a Summer Beauty VoxBox from Influenster. You can read a detailed post on what was inside the box here.

And two of the products that I got were the Clear Scalp and Hair Therapy shampoo and conditioner:

They are larger than travel or most hotel sizes, but smaller than the regular size shampoo and conditioner bottles. I don’t know if you can tell from the picture, but they are 3 oz each. That’s why they only lasted me 2 weeks, plus all of my intensive workouts, and washing my hair practically every day (which I hate and try not to do).

Another sad part is that I always run out of conditioner faster than shampoo, that’s why I like having masks and other 3-5 minute treatments handy, that way I can actually use them instead, and make the conditioner last longer. Interestingly enough, my husband is the exact opposite.

Now, what do these products promise us?

“Nourishment, strong beautiful hair, ten vitamins and nutrients, stronger, more beautiful hair in 7 days, less breakage when combing vs. non-conditioning shampoo.”

Unfortunately the 10 vitamins and nutrients are nowhere to be listed, but there is a heck of a lot of acids and sulfates in the ingredients, and coconut oil somewhere at the end of the list:

1. Ingredient list for shampoo

2. Ingredient list for conditioner:

Almost scary looking, aren’t they now?

Since I’ve been using these products for 2 weeks now, I feel like I can share my opinion and experience. So let’s go through the basics:

Smell: Some artificial, very chemical scent, reminds of the smell of Dove, but since it’s all produced by Unilever,F that’s not very surprising. The shampoo and conditioner both smell the same. I am sure other products from this brand smell the same, kind of like Garnier’s Fructis. I am not a huge fan of the smell, it’s not as strong when you put it in your hair though.

Look: Unfortunately I am so out of these products, I couldn’t even get anything out of the bottles to show you, but shampoo and conditioner both look pretty much the same, there is obvious shimmer added to the first one, and the conditioner just has a thicker texture.

Feel: The shampoo is pretty nice, lathers up well, gets coconut oil out of my hair in one wash (I put coconut oil in my hair in the mornings when I run on the treadmill, just as a conditioner) which is definitely a plus. Conditioner doesn’t really do it for my ends, if anything, it made them even drier. So I am not overly excited about that.

Overall I wasn’t necessarily impressed with this combo, it was nice to get the smaller sample sizes of it for free, to see how I would like them, and well, the truth is – I am going to stick to my organic, SLS free products, because they don’t dry and frizz out my hair, have a proper list of ingredients, no harsh chemical scents, and are eco friendly.

Have you tried any of the Clear products? If so, please share your opinion 🙂

Zhenya

Influenster Summer Beauty VoxBox 2012

I know I promised some of you a thrifted vintage dress refashion – that’s been moved to tomorrow and I will actually have pictures of me in the dress this time, because I am wearing it tomorrow to go to a ____with my friend 🙂 I will fill in that blank tomorrow too!

Today’s post as you may have guessed by the title is dedicated to Influenster Summer Beauty VoxBox. Well what’s Influenster? It’s a website for people who love to try new products, and leave their feedback in different social networks. The products are sent to qualifying members a few times a year, and this summer I got to be one of the chosen ones!

So when my husband picked me up from work today and said that I got a box, I knew exactly what he was talking about! And I couldn’t wait to get home to open it!

Now to qualify for a box you need to earn a good number of badges on Influenster, and then fill out the prequalification survey, that they email you a link to! Once you’ve been chosen – you’ll get a list of products, that will be sent to you. But it’s not going to say – 1 Neutrogena hand lotion, it’ll just say – a hand lotion, a shampoo, a conditioner, etc. I hope you get the idea.

So here it is – my Summer 2012 Beauty VoxBox:

Super excited for this nail polish, I actually had a coupon I was going to use to purchase it, and then it came in the box – how cool is that! Good news is I can always use this coupon to get a different color! 😉

I love those – Sam and I buy them all the time – he likes the cinnamon kind, but I like the banana nut the best!

And finally some feminine products! Apparently these are from some new collection and are scented! We’ll see!

Can’t wait to try these products! Stay tuned for the reviews!

Xo,

Z

Disclaimer: I received each product complimentary for testing purposes from Influenster

My Strong Light Hold – Aveda Hairspray!

Today’s post is going to be a review on my new favorite hairspray. To be honest I was skeptical at first when i bought it. Plus it cost $16 which for hairspray is kind of a lot of money. I’m sure most of you have already realized that I’m talking about my Aveda hairspray with witch hazel.

It’s a light hold hairspray with a slight scent of witch hazel, which doesn’t bug me at all, as opposed to regular Witch Hazel that I bought from CVS and use as a toner every once in a while. Aveda also sells medium and stronghold versions of hairspray, but the way the light hold spray holds my hair in place is so amazing I can’t imagine what the other two can do! I use it mostly for work when I need to take care of my bangs as they tend to get into my eyes, trust me, even the bobby pin can’t cope with the task. And who likes hair in their face? Another pleasant surprise was the fact that this hairspray was able to hold a messy bun in place for the entire day, a hair tie and hair spray, no bobby pins required.  I was never able to achieve the exact same result was drugstore hairsprays.

This spray is also liquid. Which makes it different from everything that I’ve used before. But the directions on it are completely the same – you basically hold it away from your face about 10 to 12 inches and spray! How easy is that? I’ve had it for about a month and a half now, and I’ve been using it almost every day.

And it looks like it will last me for a good few months as opposed to other hair sprays that only last me about two months, and I didn’t use those every day. I honestly wish that this product was a little cheaper, not everyone is willing to pay $16 for a hairspray. But if it’s going to last me a long time then I’m willing to do it again and again. I’m convinced I found my perfect hairspray!

I hope this review was helpful and I would love to hear about your favorite hairspray products, so please leave me comments below on which ones you like and which ones you hate. Have a good Saturday everybody!

Cheers,

Z

Latest Additions to my Beauty Collection

I’ve been shopping a little lately, well not really a little, the new bag, then the Old Navy Haul, now Beauty purchases, I am on a kind of roll and I keep telling myself that I gotta stop. But before I do, let me share some of my latest purchases with you!

If you follow me on Twitter on Instagram, you might have already seen these pictures, but I realize that not everyone is as obsessed/dependent on their phone as me, so here they are again:

As you can see, I got some Revlon and Maybelline (sorry, Clinique, but it’s taking too long to get my gratis :/)

Anyways I needed some powder, and even tough I said that I am never ever again buying pressed powder, I went against all odds and got a pressed Revlon Photo Ready powder in Light/Medium.

I also got a Revlon Photo Ready Pore Perfecting Primer, I had some of my Russian subscribers ask me if it was foundation. I know that the filter on the picture makes the primer look darker, it’s actually pretty pink 🙂 Now I am not going to lie, I am a huge fan of Clinique’s Instant Pore Perfector in Light – that stuff is magic and makes your skin super smooth. And even though Revlon’s isn’t as good as that, it’s really not supposed to be – first of all it’s a primer for a foundation, when Clinique’s product is just a treatment that’s supposed to minimize the look of your pores. It’s really hard to compare to be honest with you, but I can tell you one thing – Revlon’s product is a lot larger, so it’s a better value for the money. Again, sorry, Clinique!

Plus I got those two products at CVS and it was buy one, get one half off, and I had the coupons, and I got another $5 Extra Bucks out of it, so I firmly believe that I should become the official Beauty blogger for CVS pharmacy, so someone nominate me 🙂

Then I got the Maybelline Color Tattoo’s in 50 “Edgy Emerald” and 25 “Bad to the Bronze” – haven’t tried them yet, but the reviews are too good to pass out on this product, I had coupons for those little jars of popping color as well!

Today I went to Aveda. See, I am trying to switch all of my haircare and body care products over to Aveda. The process is going to take a long long time, because I have a whole bunch of products at the moment, but I’ll get there 🙂 Today I started with hairspray:

I got the witch hazel hair spray to control my fly-aways, plus witch hazel is simply awesome. I also signed up for Aveda membership/points/rewards program, so I am pretty psyched about that 🙂 Plus check out all of my free samples! Gotta love Aveda for that!

If you have tried any of those products, please leave a comment below, I’d love to hear your opinion! And I am going to do a more thorough review on some of the products that I mentioned here!

Hope you all had an awesome day,

Cheers,

Z

Vitamins – is it all what it takes?

My dear blogger friends, I know I have abandoned you, and I feel so so sad about it! Yesterday I was trying to upload a post through my phone, but it wouldn’t add the pictures right, so I gave up and decided to wait till this AM!

I finally have a morning off to sit down (well actually sit up in bed) prop myself with a pillow and start writing.

I am going to talk to you about vitamins today, and why I take them. If you are my friend on Facebook, you’ve probably seen this:

I am sure some of you have been wondering about this picture, and yes, I know the printer in the background is very attractive, we are going to leave my old HP alone today.

Now I am going to say it upfront  – this post is my opinion and my alone, I won’t be convincing you to do anything, buy anything, take anything – I am just sharing my experience, that’s all.

I’ve been taking vitamins for as long as I can remember! My grandma was a doctor, so she would always give me vitamin C – in Russia it came in a little yellow ball – I think it still does – well, those vitamins were like a treat to me, almost some sort of candy. No wonder that I later snuck into the cabinet and ate the whole jar, which of course caused a rash and a lesson learned for life 😉

I later found out from a friend, whose parents were also doctors, that it takes like 20 of those to fulfill the daily dosage of Vitamin C in your body, go figure!

When I started coming to the States, all these One a Day’s were becoming more and more popular. Almost like the Gummies for adults are popular now. So I’ve taken those as well.

Basically you name it – I’ve tried it – Calciums of all sorts, Multi’s, liquids, soft gels, chewable (I went through a fiber stage, I admit), extracts…

I did take a brake for a while, I haven’t taken anything since last December I think. So what happened? Why now?

You guys it all goes back to my skin – I am not happy with the way it looks, and drinking a lot a lot of water wasn’t cutting it for me, neither were all the products I’ve been using!

So I turned to Gillian McKeeth for advice –

Yes, her, she knows what she is talking about, right?

Anyways, she connects breakouts on your face to your intestines or liver, or other internal organs, and I am sure she wasn’t the one who came up with that, so I boldly followed her advice, spent $40 bucks on all of this (Thank you CVS for BOGO!)

Now what the heck is all this again for? Oh that’s right – to get better looking skin and get rid of blemishes!

So we’ll start with the teas first – Mullein Leaf (God knows what it’s called in Russian – never saw it there, probably never will) and Dandelion tea – now the one I have here is the Detox one and it contains the same organic dandelion root as the other one, but tastes so much better! The regular dandelion is just – UGH! Even with honey and sugar and lemon, it’s still UGH! Mullein is better, a ton a ton of better – and there is more tea bags in there too – 24 vs. 16! Good thing I have coupons!

Now the vitamins – all are supposed to help get rid of blemishes and make your skin perfect. Today is Friday, I’ve started taking all of these guys on Tuesday, my skin is still not perfect :/ I guess I’m just going to keep on taking them!

Doodles,

Z

PS. A certain portion of sarcasm has been used in this post, please beware!

How I’ve been Killed softly…

Now before you read todays post, I highly recommend that you watch the entire (40 min long) presentation/speech by Jean Kilbourne!

I have posted many times about the importance of staying fit, it’s the way I’ve been raised, and it’s the influence of oh so many episodes of The Biggest Loser that I’ve watched. I have also emphasized the importance of eating healthy, of bringing all sorts of vegetables and fruits into your diet, if you don’t believe me – ask my husband. I also have covered a subject as sensitive as violence against women, based on a story of a high school friend of mine. But after watching this I couldn’t help but wonder – Have I also been killed? And killed softly?

I am going to have to say yes to this, admit that I, too, have been influenced by the ads, commercials, the many many TV shows, movies and everything that comes in between.

Growing up in Russia you’d think I was only exposed to the images of healthy looking peasant women, popping babies left and right:

You’re so wrong, I grew up reading Cool Girl, OOOPS! and YES! (if I remember all these titles correctly), an Eastern European version of Teen Vogue and Seventeen:

When we got our first VCR all we had were work out tapes. My mother was extremely obsessed with her self-image, she worked out at the gym 3 times a week after work, I was in 8th grade then. Needless to say I got hooked onto the Cindy Crawford workout videos, as a matter of fact up to this day, her workouts remain some of my favorite ones. Thanks to those workouts I always ran track in high school and college, nothing wrong with being athletic!

I was 16 when I got my first highlights. I was never happy with my hair color, I always thought it was dull and flat. How crazy is it to realize that this was 9 years ago! I haven’t dyed my hair since 2009 and I couldn’t be happier. But yet again, I am thinking of getting high lights this spring (Blake Lively obsession, unhealthy, right?)

Now I have always been anti Botox, Implants and all the other body “alterations”. I remember watching an episode from one of the earlier seasons of Nip/Tuck where a surgeon put the implant in the wrong way, so he then had to take it out, and there is blood and silicone and mess everywhere. I am a B cup and always will be, so I am pretty happy with what I’ve got!

Moving on to the subject of violence – I think some women should stop dressing slutty. I remember the SLUT walk Sam and I came across once walking around Minneapolis. No won’t mean no when you are dressed like a hooker. Growing up at a church we were taught one golden rule that applied to clothes – Would you wear it if you were going to go hang out with Jesus? And by hanging out I don’t mean death or anything, just a usual stroll in the park with the Lord. I am pretty sure Jesus would’ve been proud of my fashion sense, I am 25 and finally know how to dress myself!

Now how did this documentary affected me personally? Well they say step 1 is acknowledgement, and then what? Am I going to stop dressing up, using make up, reading Vogue and trying to achieve the unachievable? NO! Call me stupid, call me anything you want, but when we are walking the streets of Minneapolis my husband is proud he is married to me, everyday he tells me how pretty and sexy I am, and that’s what matters the most. I am sure a lot of you are getting madder at me by the second, especially now that I brought my husband up, but you can tell this same thing to yourself! You don’t need a guy to approve of you! When I lived in Manhattan my hair was two different colors for crying out loud! Yes, I can always say I was trying to pull off the ombre look, but who will I be kidding?

Anyways, it’s everyone’s personal choice whether to be affected by it all, or not, and it all depends on the way you’ve been raised, and what values have been implanted into your brain, because trust me, I never leave the house, unless I think that Jesus would’ve been proud of my outfit 😉

How to stay SKINNY in America

It’s Monday, and we all know that a lot of people do the whole: “Starting Monday, I’m going to….” (fill in the blank!) thing. And most of the time that blank is – EXERCISE. Having lived in the States for about 2y 9m (yes, I’ve added up all of my trips here), I managed to maintain and in some cases even lose my weight. And the stress factor doesn’t count. So today, I thought I’ll share some of my tips. You should try them, because they work. And I am happy as can be, being under 120 lb!

1. Walk everywhere – it’s so easy to do living in the big city. Even when I lived in suburban New Jersey, I found some destinations I could walk to – like the CVS pharmacy, the post office or Church. Sometimes I just took walks around the neighborhood. I also had a friend who would meet me at Verona Park and walk or jog with me! Then I moved to the UWS and NYC is NYC, owning a car there is a bigger hassle and expense than not owning one! Plus the location was fab – I was less than a block away from Central Park. And that was a great play to walk/jog! Plus the peer pressure of Manhattan – staying skinny, working out, because everyone else is! After moving to Minneapolis, I can gladly say that I am still able to walk everywhere, plus Minneapolis turned out to be a city full of bikes! Which makes it even more awesome! I am now looking forward to next spring, when I will be able to ride my bike everywhere I can’t walk to 😉

Plus celebs like Kate Bosworth, Elle Macpherson and many others do it, so should you!

2. Take the stairs! That always works, whether you are at a mall or in a skyway. No stairs? Walk on the escalator! Besides if you only think that walking up is a good workout – you are wrong, because walking down is just as good of an exercise!

3. Drink water, but not just any water – drink lemon water, because it helps break down the carbs and digest food better. Sometimes Aloe Vera juice is a good source to run to, because it’s sold in the laxative aisle at your local store 😉 Another recipe that I follow sometimes is: a full glass of water, plus a tbsp honey, plus a tbsp NATURAL apple cider vinegar, 4 tbsp lemon juice and 2 tbsp aloe vera. Mix it and drink in the morning, before your coffee, before your breakfast, before you basically do anything! That mix helps boost your metabolism!

Important: When I say lemon water I mean real water that has a slice of lemon in it, or at least some ReaLemon juice, not the bottled flavored water!

4. “I don’t want to be like them” technique – that is going to sound harsh, but I firmly believe that this method works! Call me a skinny bitch, but I am not giving it up! I simply say to myself – that I don’t want to be like them, I don’t want to be fat, I don’t want to have health problems, I don’t want to have to see a doctor about my weight. I’d rather be skinny and a head turner! Besides, clothes do look better on skinny people. And I will not take any excuses from anyone. Because in the end, wouldn’t you rather look like this?

5. Go to the farmer’s market. I do question where our local one get’s it’s produce, but hey I am not going to argue 2 dollar tomatoes. Anyways it’s easy to eat healthy in America, in spite of all arguments from people who think that US = McDonald’s. Over the past few years the number of health food stores increased drastically – all the Trader Joe’s and Co-ops and other fancy places. Yes, it’s going to be expensive, but some things are worth buying natural!

I remember reading a Zooey Deschanel interview for Self magazine, where she also argued with people who say that it’s hard to eat healthy when on tour. She made her point by saying that Whole Foods is in every big city these days, so those people are just making excuses.

6. Stop making excuses! I know old habits die hard, but there is a place for self-control, motivation and determination in everyone’s life. Besides, if you have a person to support you, it’s that much easier!

Have a happy fun Monday, and a great week everyone!

Xo,

ZhenyAH!

Nivea vs Camay

Deodorants are important, we all know that. I hope you know that! Well, if you didn’t, there, I told you!

Monday I realized I ran out of my Rexona, and needed to buy a new deodorant before I left for the States. I do have a deodorant dilemma though. It’s really hard for me to find the one that works well. While living in NYC I have even tried some natural/herbal brands, like Tom’s, some other kind that smelled like baby powder, and another one that had aloe extract. Needless to say the last one was pretty useless, but at least the money went to breast cancer research, so I can feel good about donating.

A few days ago I saw an ad about Nivea’s new deodorant Invisible for black and white. It says that it doesn’t leave white marks on black clothes and prevent yellow stains on white. It’s also alcohol free and is supposed to last for 48 hours.

The other deodorant that I’ve been dying to use is Camay. Now that one has more scent to it. I chose the Pink grapefruit. This one promises to stay for 24 hours, and well that’s the only promise it makes. I do like the design, all the twirls and bubbles.

Size wise Camay has a little more to offer, 5 grams more, to be exact. So that doesn’t really make a difference. Price wise, they are about the same, Nivea is a little more expensive, I also had a discount at the store, so that evened the price out. Scent wise Camay kicks Nivea’s ass big time. I guess when it comes to deodorants I prefer scented ones. But if you like neutral scents or prefer non-scented deodorants over everything else, then Nivea is for you.

So what I did, was wear both deodorants at the same time. You know how in the commercials they use one under one armpit, and the other under a different one? Yes, that’s exactly what I did. I also wore them through a workout. And I could definitely smell Camay, which I liked. Again, this is my personal opinion.

The verdict: Camay definitely won me over, but because of Nivea’s no marks on black and white, I will continue to use it as well. Both deodorants have their advantages and drawbacks, I hope you pick the one that’s right for you!
