2012 October

Happy Halloween!

It’s The second day of partying and celebrating Halloween at work for me! Yesterday was our 101 Dalmatians day, and today you can go as whoever! So Ta-Da I am a witch! The costume came from my closet, I didn’t have to buy anything! And that’s how we want it, right fellow thrifters?

And a close up of the face! I used a lot of blacks and grays, and skipped the blush!

My husband went as The Pwner, from Pure Pwnage! Check out the key board, that’s one important accessory!

Happy Halloween!
Please leave me links with your costumes!

OOTD (No it’s not a couch AD)

This is the outfit I wore to our thrifting extravaganza with two other Minnesota bloggers – Megan and Lauren (make sure to check out their blogs!) Haul post is coming out tomorrow :) Yay! I personally love hauls (posts, videos, pinterest boards!) you name it, I’ll look through it and most likely comment! And I suggest you do the same!

So what’s this outfit made of?

A thrifted $1.50 Banana Republic skirt

Cashmere Lord & Taylor top from a swap in NYC – so FREE!

Boots that I got from Sam a few years ago for Christmas!

My necklace came from a thrift store on the UWS (I hope it’s still there, it was on the corner of Columbus and W 83 rd, same block as Laila Rowe), so if you are there, go check it out!

And the tights came from Filene’s Basement!

And that’s it my lovelies, have a great Tuesday! We are having a 101 Dalmatians party at Day Care today, so I spent 2 hours last night painting these:

Cheers,

Mad Men Style

Hubs and I went to a party on Saturday night, and the theme was Mad Men. I was so so excited to dress 60′s style, well you know how I am! I’m always looking for an excuse to look fancy, especially because I am stuck wearing a uniform of sorts for 5 days a week! A couple weeks ago I posted pics from my thrifting trip to Goodwill in Roseville, and that’s when the finds came in handy! And yes, I was specifically looking for something to wear to that party, and even though I’ve already spilled the beans in that post, here is how it all looked on me :)

And of course a picture of me in my favorite coat (SPOILER: I scored some awesome coats thrifting yesterday with Megan of Mr.C & Me and Lauren of Our Crazy Ever After - don’t forget to check out their blogs!)

So here is what the entire outfit came down to:

My cardigan (originally HWR) – $2.50

My dress (J.Crew) – $3.50

My necklace and earrings were a gift, I also brought my vintage Etra clutch ($3.99 at Salvation Army, but I got it over a year ago, sorry you can’t really see it in the pictures very well :/)

My coat is that Bitten brand by SJParker (around $30), that ceased to exist back in 2008 when Steve & Barry’s went out of business, and the shoes are from TJ Maxx ($20), I think these last two items were the most expensive ones, but keep in mind the fact that I’ve had this coat for 4 years, and shoes for 2!

And the scarf came from Goodwil Outlet, so I am pretty sure it cost under $1!

So there you have it, my $57 outfit!

I also wanted to give a shout out and mention Influenster one more time, I was able to pin my hair up with the Goody Spin Pins I got in my Blogger Vox Box. It was super fast and easy, and I will definitely use the spin pins again!

What did you wear this weekend?

Happy Monday everyone,

Z

Anna Karenina Collection at Banana Republic

Maybe it’s finally time to read the book, or at least watch the new movie?! Yes, I am Russian and I’ve never read Anna Karenina :)

Anyways I am so so excited for this collection to launch, mainly because of this hat:

This cape:

And the amount of lace they used to make the dresses:

What are you excited for today? Have a great Wednesday everyone!

Cheers!

OOTD: A ZIG and a ZAG

How do you combine a $4 Adrienne Vittadini  thrifted dress, $10 sale shoes, $6 clearance sweater, a unique handmade jewelry piece, and a $400 Ralph Lauren purse in one outfit?

Here is how:

Hubs and I took the most peaceful walk through the North Loop neighborhood, and then along the River Front here in Minneapolis. The last photo was taken under the Hennepin Ave bridge! I hope you had an awesome Sunday and enjoyed the warm weather in the Cities :)

Cheers,

Influenster Beauty Bloggers VoxBox 2012

Blogging, just like everything in life comes with it’s own perks. Today I am sharing one of mine – the Influenster Beauty Bloggers VoxBox 2012. I’ve recently received it in the mail. It was sent to me from this amazing website – Influenster.com . I highly recommend that you give this website a shot, especially if you are beauty/skincare/makeup obsessed, or just like free stuff :) Plus the website has a new updated interface, which is way more user friendly, the reviews are easy to find and are honest, because they are written by ordinary people, just like you and me!

So what was in my box?

I was kind of upset because I didn’t get a bonus item. Select members got either a Vitabath Fragrance Mist or a Boots No 7 Beautiful Skin. I really wish I would’ve gotten the latter, I’ve been dying to try that line. I guess I’ll just have to splurge and buy some of the products. Thankfully that line is available at Target!

Here is my super cute miniature candle, the box also included a $10 coupon on a 3 wick Bath & Body Works candle, but since I’ve already done all of my candle shopping for the season, I think I am going to hold off on that one! Let me know if you want that coupon and I’ll mail it to you!

Another thing that I have tried out of the box, and probably what I was most excited for was this NYC palette, which includes 4 eyeshadows (2 matte, 2 shimmer), a primer and a creamy illuminator. I used it to do my makeup on Friday!

I have also tried the EBOOST powder, mixed it with my water and drank it last night! That thing fizzes up!

I don’t think I’ll be purchasing this anytime soon, because a box of 20 pouches (single servings) is $28! Airborne serves the same purpose, and is much more affordable! If you are looking for a good Airborne knock-off try CVS brand, I’ve tried that and Target brand and I can definitely say that CVS is much closer to the real thing than Target!

And finally there is a 1.5 oz tube of Not Your Mother’s Smooth Moves Frizz Control Hair Cream, Kiss Ever Pro Lashes Starter Kit and Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin – I will dedicate separate posts to those two products, though I am kind of skeptical about the pins, maybe it’s the fact that I have rather fine hair :)

So there you have it, my Beauty Blogger VoxBox 2012! Did you get a box? What was in it? What do you like or dislike about it? Do tell!

The Making of a Doll

I’ve tried making dolls on several occasions, but I can’t really recall what’s happened. I am pretty sure all of my previous attempts failed. This time, I had a purpose, the doll was going to be a Birthday gift, a very delayed one, but one nonetheless, for an amazing little girl I used to babysit. And since I only had one day to do it, I turned to Internet for help. I managed to find a pattern that I liked, though it was used for felt dolls, and since I only had enough felt to make a few items of clothing for the doll, I decided to use this pattern, and see how it would go!

As you may have noticed in the tutorial that I linked above, the dolls were hand-sewn, I made mine on a machine, once again, because the fabric I used was some mix of polyester and God-knows-what :)

And here is what I ended up with:

And then of course I made some clothes for her! I figured jeans, top and a jacket were a safe bet!

Have you ever tried making a doll? If so, how did it turn  out? Also, if there are any patterns or tutorials that you especially like, please leave me links below!

I am also pet sitting for a fish for a few days! His name is Buckwheat, and he says hi!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Cheers,

Z

Boutique GW

Here I am at Goodwill in Rosedale, going through the racks with skirts like a maniac, when I hear

- Oh that’s a size 6, that’s going to be too small.

So I start a conversation with this woman, find out that she is going to a party the next day and that skirt would’ve been perfect for the event. So blah-blah here, there and everywhere, the lady turns out to be Russian (and no, we didn’t become best friends on the spot :) but we had a nice chat). I told her my Xanax pills story, she told me that one of her coworkers has a code word for Goodwill (not everyone is as comfortable telling the world that everything they buy is from a thrift store) – Boutique GW, hence the title!

Once again, if you are living in the Twin Cities area and want to go thrifting, shoot me a message! There is contact info in the “About Me” section, or there is always Twitter!

Now the fun part, the finds! I have released a teaser (haha I know I sound so official) on Istagram on Saturday, showing the tag to my newly thrifted Christian Dior skirt:

And here is the skirt itself:

It’s going to be perfect for fall/winter, since it’s so warm! Are you ready for price now? $2.99 It was 50% off, so $1.50! That’s my kind of price for Dior! Basically everything that you’ll see in today’s post was 50% off, so hold on tight to your chairs!

Anthropologie HWR brand cardigan, $2.50 originally $4.99

Another HWR top for $2.50 originally $4.99 (both pulled off the New Arrivals rack)

J.Crew dress size 2 $3.50 originally $6.99 I got it for a special event which I am going to keep a secret now, there will be a separate post dedicated to it!

And – SURPRISE – here is some crinoline:

I also got this Webster dress in XS (it was a limited collection for Target this past summer), only $3, originally $5.99 (I used my Choose to Reuse coupon book on this one! Thank you to Hennepin County for a great program) I rarely buy Target brands at thrift stores, unless they are limited collections :)

I got a couple more sweaters, this one is Isaac Mizrahi, $2.50, originally $4.99

A Club Room sweater in L  $2.50, originally $4.99 (It’s men’s I know, it’s too big for me, I know) but it’s a perfect oversized baggy sweater to cozy up in and if I ever want to – I can make Sam wear it!

Up next - Adrienne Vittadini dress in M, this was the most expensive purchase of all – $4.50, originally $8.99. Another perfect fall dress, and don’t you just love this zig-zag pattern? Plus it has this awesome exposed zipper! Ah – can’t wait to wear it!

I also got a few skirts! They were all $1.50! I would’ve gotten more, but decided not too. See I can control my thrifting addiction (yeah, right!)

This one is a Banana Republic, in size 4

This one is 100% silk Winter Silks (oh the irony) skirt in size 8 (look at me, I am all over with my sizes today!) I totally fell for the pattern, can you tell?

This one is a made in USA no brand, size 16 very light, very see through pleated skirt, which I bought

1. because I fell in love with the color

2. because I fell in love with the pleats

3. because I knew I could make it work!

So I am simply going to adjust the elastic in the waistband, wear a slip underneath and rock my skirt and boots look this fall!

I know that some of you are going to say “Little House on the Prairie” about this skirt, but it’s a brand new vintage (if vintage can be brand new :) ) Susan Bristol in size 12. It reminded me of the traditional Russian scarves, can’t wait to style this piece for you!

And finally this turquoise necklace, that was $3.99

I hope you enjoyed this haul, please let me know what you liked the least and what you liked the most! I will be styling these pieces and blogging about it shortly!

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Cheers,

Zhenya

PS. Some of the purchased items were stained, but I got all of the stains out! Let me know if you want a post on how to get rid of stains on thrifted clothes!

Loving Fall

Enjoy the warm fall everyone!

Sinks need Skirts too!

Yes, sinks need skirts too! It’s not that I hated not having any cabinets under my bathroom sink, I just didn’t like it. Then I came across this amazing tutorial in one of my thrifted books:

I then remembered that I had some left over cotton fabric from this pillowcases DIY, and I decided to put it to good use! I did have to sew a few pieces together, only because the original fabric piece wasn’t wide enough:

Thanks to the most amazing invention in the world – sticky velcro – I was able to finish this project in no time!

I hope you like it! Now I can hide all the cleaning supplies there!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Zhenya
